Where are the games like Colony Wars? It seems that the PC gets a couple good release each year. I know its becuase of the depth of control a keyboard can offer. It seems as though any space combat sim on a console has to have a movie or TV tie in.

Man I am craving a good game in this genre. Maybe I've missed a recent release. Any suggestions? As it stands right now I'm going to see how far I can get on Starlancer for the Dreamcast.

I really wish they'd release another Wing Commander.

I'd rather get ONE perfect release every 5 years than a bunch of rushed releases every year. Like Ace Combat 04. I don't need another version when I have that. (Not until PS3 anyway)

Well I HAVE to reccomend the rouge squadron games for GC. Not quite "Sims" per se but a LOT of fun running the missions. A better StarWars space battle game you will not find.

I'm hoping to see a Freespace 3 game someday *sighs*

But, yeah, Star wars games on GC are pretty good.

I too have been pining for a current gen Colony Wars. The industry is so big on franchises right now, you'd think they'd jump on this one.

Battlestar Galactica looks somewhat similar from screenshots, I think I'll make that one a weekend rental.

Battlestar is supposed to be alot like Starlancer, but very hard. I need to pick it up...sounds like my kind of game :-P

I tried to rent it but there isn't a single rental store in my town which has it.

Have you played Descent: Freespace? Dead sexy.

I thought Starlancer and Bang! Gunship Elite on the Dreamcast were quite good... although for some reason, I can't get anywhere in either game. Even on the lowest difficulty settings, I still get my ass handed to me.

Is Starlancer the one where the enemy pilots call you after you've blown up your ship to scream? How STUPID. You'll blow up a ship, then a video screen appears with an enemy pilot in distress, then you see static and hear "arrrggggg!!!". Like "Hello, since you blew up my ship I thought I'd give you a call to let you know how it's going. Arrrrggggg!!!"

Maybe I'm thinking of a different game?

Warthog, the developer of Starlancer, made Mace Griffin, which includes a few space combat scenes. The controls are a little weird at first, but you get used to them after a while. The FPS levels are comparably worse, though.

I, too, pine for space combat. Of course, it's not like I've had time to play the "dead sexy" Descent: Freespace, or Freespace 2, or Wing Commander: Prophecy, or even X-Wing: Alliance, but I did do all of the Colony Wars games, and I put man-months of play-time in on X-Wing, Tie Fighter, X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, and X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter: Balance of Power.

So while I am comforted by the sizable backlog of space combat sims I've yet to devour, I am a bit anxious about the future of the genre. So for now, when I'm not enjoying Independence War, I will drown my sorrows with mech sims.
