I took apart one of my NES to clean the 72pin, and noticed this port on the bottom. There is a removable piece on the bottom of the nes but the port is covered over. What is this for? Was there ever anything developed to plug into it? or anything in develpoment?

It's an expansion port for extra hardware that was never released. There probably was a plan to have disk drive similiar to FDS in Japan. I think there also was going to be a modem like X-Band for NES.

There's nothing released that can use the port so don't bother with it.
