Barely working N64

The damn thing gets power, I know the AV cable I'm using works, but 9 times out of 10 when I turn it on I get a black screen...what should I do? Clean it? I'm probably going to just return it unless this is an easy fix.

Does it happen with all games or just one? I had a starfox cart that wouldn't play, just gave me a black screen. I took it out, gave it a quick wipe with alcohol, and it worked. If it happens with all games I'd guess it's the N64 slot that needs cleaning. Hope this helps!
