...not how to do it, but WHERE to do it in a town of about 4,500. The only electronics store we have is Radio Shack, and I am not sure if their dumpster is a good target. There is also a small Sears hardware depot, but ditto. However, there is ALSO a local video rental place....Dunno about that one.
Hmmm...can anyone help?

Although GameStores are your palce to hit, video rental stores dont hurt either. Try one, she what you get. They have stuff sometimes. I would say leave town to the closest Video game store. That is the best solution.

i would probably just give the ones you can find a try and if not try driving out of your town to the closest video game store you can find

Don't dumpster dive the free clinic if you're looking for videogame stuff.

Go for any store with video game or electronic-related stuff. never know what you can find. My friend was coming home from work one day and found an old PC in a dumpster (I forget where). he took it home to see what was inside and got a Sound Blaster32 sound card out of it for any spare pcs he makes.

Ya, you will not believe that some people/ stores throw away. Ive been dumpster diving for once a week (mostly) for about 2 months now. So far Ive found: games, boxes, manuals, 4 N64s, 2 PS, 2 Nes, controllers, displays, promos, magazines. Its awesome.

I've been practicing(sp?) the art of Dumpster Diving for awhile now, and although I haven't found anything really amazing. I have found N64 boxes/manuals, PS1 games, Demos, Magazines, and even a PS2 game.
We should start a Dumpster Divers club thread, and post our weekly finds plus share tips/tricks about dumpster diving. :)

i wish this rain/snow period would end and make this something to do.
my buddy went dumpster diving at a local Satelite hook up place and come up with a handful of controllers, with unopened batterys, couplers, boxes, cables. you name it....enough to put in a lot for ebay if anything.

Damn it, you're right!
Personally, I have "dumpster dove" four times at GameStop. The best thing I ever found was a metal paper towel holder. Seriously. I was really excited about dumpster diving, too. So excited, that I managed to convince myself in the dark that the paper towel holder was actually a PS2 display case.
I think I may be doing something wrong! I would love the opportunity to talk to some people who are good at this.

If your' local flea market has some trash cans set up then try searching through them at the end of the day. If you get lucky you may find some video game stuff a vendor ditched instead of taking with them, or you may even find some free lunch! @_@

Yeah, it sort of sucks when you pull your hand out and there's a dozen hypodermic needles stuck in your palm/knuckles. ;P
One thing to remember, though, seriously, is that poor folks often drop their trash into outside dumpsters, including ones that are supposed to be cardboard only.

The poor folks? Please.
Around here it's the people in $650,000 houses and consider themselves above going to the dump who throw their extra garbage into someone else's disposal unit. I mean GOD, what if someone SAW them at the dump?
