Its getting late before I sign off, I wanted to pick your brians of games that were promoted by game stores as being good that ohhhhhhhhhhhhh so werent. I have in front of me a printout from a certain game store chain that was promoting Bubsy 3D back in the day. This was supposedly a blurp to help sales people promote the pile of stinking poo that the game was. I cant post it but I can give a little quote from it.
The printout reads
Bubsy is a fun game with a style different than most other computer rendered 3D games on the market. It has beautiful areas lovingly hand crafted by a team of expert animators. The game play will keep you searching Bubsy's world for some time, as you discover new enemies, explore hidden areas, and continue Bubsy's wild adventure.
LOL LOL LOL LOL
Wow, if that wasnt so far from the truth, I dont know what is! Is there any games you can think of that were heavily and positively promoted(any way shape or form), by game stores that were just plain awful? I thought this was funny, or is it just late?

Well, in more recent times, Halo for PC and the Matrix game for all consoles come to mind.

Haha, yeah.
The Nokia debacle still burns in our minds and hearts...when we remember it exists, that is...

Same here. I was working at an EB at the time, and I got it, and returned it 2 hours later. My god, did that game suck. I think that's the first instance, at least that I can think of, half asleep, where a game was forcefed to gamers for no good reason other than it would sell like hotcakes if they just said GTA.

Heh Heh yeah and EB had a TON of them and after the first week or so when they realized the game did suck, the poor employees seemed to be FORCED into pushing this Pice-o-Crap to everyone who walked in... They had WAY too many of them. The poor guy at my store looked at me with total disgust as he started to push the game on me. I smiled because I could tell that he had to do it because his manager was right there. He knew I had traded it in too. I felt bad for the guy. He has always played it straight with me (Probably because I was such a good regular customer) It just seemed pretty crappy that he was being forced to push this thing on poor unsuspecting people :(

State of Emergency was the first game to come to mind. What a POS.
I second Brute Force also. Man, What a piece of crap. Nothing like Halo.
I am surprised nobody has mentioned the new Star Fox, Mario, or Zelda games. I am waiting to see a ruckus.

Don't flame me, but I liked State of Emergency. I especially enjoyed the mall level, probably because I had two jobs in the same mall when the game came out and wished I could burn it down with Molotov cocktails. I found the game to be very therapeutic.
As a matter of fact, I own the game on the PS2 and Xbox...but that's another story for another day.

But see, with the possible exception of Mario Sunshine, those were all GOOD games. The thread is about games that sucked.

I agree Brute Force really sucked especially the two player mode
I got this game for free when I bought a new Xbox and my local Gamestop ( I hate the manager there always have) anyway the offer at the time was a free copy of bf with a purchase of a new Xbox I almost told the assistant manger that was selling the system to me to just keep the game cuase it sucked but I though oh well free game
I later traded it in for like 4$ credit thats how much I disliked that game :D

Normally, I'm not one to judge a game by its cover, but I would make an exception with this one... Only a mother could love boxart like that.

This one EB Games I was at just all of a sudden promoted the HELL out of Hydrothunder 64 a week before it's release. I remember going in there and seeing them put up all these stands and flyers all over the store. Then when I went in on the day of it's release (not to get that, there was another 64 game on the same day I wanted to get), like four people came in a row to return it.
And I was only in the store for six minutes. LOL

I disagree. Well, I agree that the game sucked, but I don't think the game stores promoted it.
The gaming mags promoted it forever, but it took so long to be released (with engine changes and whatnot) that it basically came in wtih a whimper and left the same way. So, I don't think the game stores themselves really promoted it. In fact, when I was in EB the guy at the counter had quite a few, but told me that I would be VERY sorry if I bought that game. To this day I've never played it.
At least this was my experience.

Would you guys have felt differently about State of Emergency if it had been priced at $20 and not offered up as the second coming of GTA?

Nope. It's priced at close to $8 used and I still don't feel differently. Hell, it was priced at $20 when it was released on Xbox recently, and very few people cared then either.
I've seen poor games released at $20 and under, the only way I'd pick it up is if I'd never seen it before. Sometimes those crappy games become scarce.

And as far as I am concerned the GTA series.

Only thing coming to mind right now is Enter The Matrix. I remember it being the only game that I can remember the manager belittling me and treating me like an idiot because I DIDN'T want the game! O_O
