Yes VERY Interested (this would be a birthday present for a friend). Question is which Generation is it. 1,2? How old is it?

Just need to see if she'd be happy with a 5 and not a 10...

If it's formatted for Mac, you have to reformat it to use it in Windows. Change the file system to sum it up in small words, kind of.

I already have an Ipod, this would be my second if it gets to me, but there is no formatting...the Ipod is like it's own system, not like a diskette...All you need is iTunes, (free to download), the installation cd that comes with the ipod, and the Ipod cradle (35 dollars or so), and the Y wire which has a USB out for PC and an out for powering at the same time (15 dollars or so)...no actually formatting required...I think you can get away with just the cord, but the cradle is so handy. :)

Please correct me if I'm wrong though...Mine is also a Gen 2 and this sounds like a Gen 1.

Well, I read up over the past day and found that it's just like a removable hard drive. You have to format it for fat32 since mac and windows don't run on the same.....or something like that. I'm drunk so don't expect anything intelligent but I'm sure it has to be formated and it appears to be somewhat of a simple process yet.....not easy for all. Mac Ipods must be formatted for windows...and some people just don't pick up on the whole PC repair end. If you do then this should be an easy task, there's alot of ipod forums reguarding this process.

Why did you decide you didn't want it after just 4 hours?

I can answer a couple of questions...with this being a 5GB, I think it'd be a 1st generation. I don't think the 2Gs came in 5GB.

Second, to reformat it for a Windows box, you'll need to get the iPod updater software. If you just reformat it through Windows, I don't know for certain if it will work or not. At any rate, you can get the software from the Apple website (you'll need version 1.3, the newer version won't work on an iPod this old.) You just plug in your iPod, boot the software and you're up and running.

A slight caveat, this model is the Firewire only one and these buggers are real particular about what Firewire cards they'll work with. Anything recent should be ok, but I just got a 20GB 2G and never could get it working on my old computer.

Not trying to cock block your sale, just passing along some words of wisdom from someone who just got one of these. :)

I concur everything he said to be exactly what I read a couple of days ago. My question for current Ipod owners is this. Firewire.....you have 4 pin and 6 pin. From what I've seen, the Ipod is 6pin to 6pin...meaning it has a 6pin on the ipod and the cable is designed for a 6 pin slot. So, If this is correct, could I use a 6-4pin cable for my laptop? Or would I just have to try it out? Moreless, I'm just looking for people that may have tried it.

I believe the 6->4 pin should work.

The difference between 6 and 4 pin is that 6 pins passes power, while 4 pin does not.

The IPOD should work off its own power. 6 pin is only required for devices that need power from the host.

you can also just get the Ipod specific y cable that goes from your ipod's propriatary input (at the bottom) to USB AND FireWire...seriously, it works.

ok it's sold anyways

it's first gen, firewire only

it's formatted mac, windows usr just hook it up(xp and so on) it will ask to format it, do so...then rn apples ipod updater from there support site, boom, done.

it will work with a 6 pin(ipod side) to 4 pin cable or adpter, but you dosen't charge from your computer.

........newer ipods auto format upon the fist time connecting/installing software to the correct needed format....windows user wiould have an extra line under settings/info telling them windows format or not.
