I believe mine was Mortal Kombat 2 for the genesis.
Ahh the good ole days of me and my brother beating the shit out of each other... 8)

That's a tough one. I suppose Yie Ar Kung Fu.
For a 2 player fighting game My next encounter may have been a Sears Genesis display of Eternal Champions but it was only for maybe one round.
I consider my first real experience Mortal Kombat 1. We were over at home of one of my sisters friends and they had it for their Genesis. We played that for hours.

street fighter 2 in the arcade. me and a friend actually broke the joysticks trying to figure out special moves. the ledge that holds the joystick actually came up and the game froze. we walked away slowly.

I of course wasted a ton of cash on arcade SF2 (not having a clue what I was doing when I played it) but I vaguely recall playing Fatal Fury on a good ol' Neo Geo MVS before that.
"Damn, there's a huge line for Street Fighter 2....hey! Look! There's no line for this fighting game!"
Of course, with the way the original Fatal Fury plays (figure out the enemy's pattern) it's more like a puzzle game...

Does boxing for the 2600 count? :)
Otherwise, Karate Champ. Primitave, yes, but fun back in the day. My buddy used to own the arcade cabinet (funny, because he never owned a single console) and we used to have fun with that even though it was outdated even then (1994).

Black Belt on the SMS. Back then I thought it was the best fighting game ever! Now I can't even play it. :box!:

Arcade game might have been karate champ all I know is it had 2 yoysticks "one to move one for attacks" and there was bonus rounds like pots flying at you and a bull that attacked you.
Also butta fights with greasy naked men in truck stop toilet stalls.

Yie Ar Kung Fu was the first for me as well. Back in 1989, when I first moved to Guam, the laundromat on base (Still don't know why there was one, all the houses had washers and dryers) had that, Rastan, and Pooyan. I played Pooyan more because my Kung Fu games were always so short. In fact, that turned me off to fighters until Street Fighter2 came out...

SF2 turbo - snes
before that i didn't like fighting games.

Probably Street Fighter II on the Megadrive. Wasn't that big a fan of it, I always hated the fact that I found it nearly impossible to do a Dragon Punch using a standard pad
I moved on to Streets of Rage 2 then. I LOVE that game.

GI Joe for the Apple, I think. You had the Joes Vs. Cobra. The Joes usually won, though. I remember playing my friend, and I was the ninja, Stormshadow, and his guy was in a forklift. My ninja stars didn't do jack. Besides that, Street Fighter II. I used Blanka, and got up to Bison. No joke. No special moves. A lot of biting.

Street Fighter 2 in the arcade, like many others I was weaned on the SF2 machine.

That would be Activision's "Boxing" for the 2600. Well, boxing is fighting, ain't it? Ain't it?
If you don't want to count that, I guess it would probably be Street Fighter II Turbo for the SNES...

Mine would be Yi Ar Kung-Fu for NES. I also remember playing a karate game in the arcade many years ago that had no buttons, just 2 joysticks, that was really cool. Was that the "Karate Champ" that everyone is talking about?

The first fighting game I ever played was Street Fighter II on the SNES, which is also one of the few that I've really enjoyed. I'm not really that big on fighting games for the most part, though.

karate champ and punch out initially...
then on to double dragon, final fight, etc.
then came street fighter 2.
once i had wasted a lot of money paying 0.50 for SF2 games (hey, 2 quarters for a game without a sitdown cabinet or steering wheel was nuts in '91), i moved on to cheaper 0.25 games like fatal fury and world heroes. still got whooped.
finally beat SF2 in the arcade with zangief.
went to grandparent's friends' sports bar where they put their SF2 machine on free play for me, and got pretty decent with chun li.
mortal kombat hits. got MK and FF for the genesis, and hones my skills until i could beat them in my sleep.
FINALLY got decent at SF2 turbo on the SNES in about '94-'95.
'96-99 owned an N64, so i had no fighters.
bought a DC on 9/9/99 with soul calibur, and bought every 2D and 3D figher practicaly made for the system until i sold it in 2000 when i bought my launch PS2.
late 2000-2004 - played a whole bunch of sub par PS2 fighters. GGX2 on the xbox was decent though.
2004 - realized 2D fighters are my first gaming love, even if i'm merely average at them. bought a consolized mvs, and RBFF2, garou: MOTW, KOF '99, samurai showdown, etc. with more on the way.
these i will keep forever. though i do want a dedicated SF2 turbo cabinet.

street fighter 2
but the one I enjoyed the most was xmen vs. streetfighter cause it was much faster and crazier at the time.

I think mine was Kung Fu for NES.
Mine would be Street Fighter II for the Arcade. Played it at a friend's birthday party at some skating place. I liked it enough to rent it for the SNES and it's still one of my favorite fighting games.

Hmm...does Pit Fighter for the Genesis cout? if not then it was some game that had a mage in it.....i can't believe i do not remember it. :(

The first fighting game I ever experienced first would be Street Fighter Alpha 2 for the PS1. The character I was manly the best with would be Ryu, Ken, and Akuma. I would always used to play this game with one of my oldest cousins in which he is very skillful when it comes to many fighting games.

SF2 for the SNES. There are other, earlier games I played that were *kinda* like fighting games, but not close enough for me to count them.
Sadly, I've never had an arcade near me where a Karate Champ or Yie-Ar Kung Fu machine existed.

Arcade Kung-Fu Master, baby!
That was the first arcade game I ever "flipped". I was a small child and had a crowd watching, my parents were there when I saved the girl for the first time. Really made me feel like a winner.
That was back in the Presidio of San Francisco's Amusement Center. Sadly, the place closed back in 2002.
The whole place is now a relic, much like myself.
It lives now... only in my memories.

As far as arcades go, I'm not sure...I never played them too much since I usually didn't have anyone to go up against. A tried some but perhaps not until I got my own for my home systems.
As far as fighting games for the consoles go, I guess Boxing by Activision for the Atari VCS might have been the first. The first martial arts type game would have been Street Fighter II Turbo which was one of my first SNES games...if I recall it was my 10th or 11th cartridge for the system.

Street Fighter II. We had a couple of arcade games at my high school and this was one of them. I think MK was the other. I used to suck at this game so bad. I got the DOS version when it came out, but I wasn good with that either. Eventually I got better. The frst fighting game that I owned would still probably be SFII for the Genny, unless you count burned DC games, which I dont.

I wasn't too good at that game when I was a kld. The last time I played it (six months ago), I got a gun pointed at me, but they were too stupid to get anything.

Mortal Kombat II, Genesis.
If you count boxing games:
I had Boxing for the Atari 2600, also Mike Tyson's Punch-Out for the
NES.
But for standard "fighting games" the first game I had was Super Street Fighter 2: Turbo for the SNES.
I've been hooked on fighting games ever since.

Yie Ar Kung Fu at the Salt Fork Lodge when I was very young. It was in the laundry room, along with Xenophobe, which was very scary to me at the time.
I still can't beat Yie Ar to this day. The bosses just get so cheap after a while.

I also have to say Karate Champ, but the NES version only. I haven't played the arcade version. The next one would have to be Street Fighter 2 arcade at a local store when I was like in the 4th grade or something

If Vigilante 8 counts then that's my answer.
Ultra Vortek for the Atari Jaguar. Yes, I know it is not the 'big' game that most folks have, but I was never a big fighting game fan. I have this game because I'm a big Jaguar Fan.
That aside, I actually like Ultra Vortek. It's got some killer moves, good character animation, and one of my friends really like the two-player mode (it is so hard for me to find friends that want to play video gams). So that aside, this was my first, and I still like the darn thing.

Mortal Kombat 2 it was for me :-) That game definitely takes me back, beating the shit out of my friends and this older kid from my neighborhood, who consequently would beat the shit out of me in real life after i beat him in the game.
