I was thinking of adding a new system to my lineup and the 3DO is selling really cheap on Ebay. I like the idea of owning a system that was once $700 for less than $50. But the question is it even worth that? If its worth getting what are the must have games for it?

Yup...lots of great games. A few of my favorites:

Star Control 2
Crash N Burn
Icebreaker
Road Rash (best version EVER!)
Return Fire
Battlesport
Gex

It's worth getting one if you can get it cheap! :D

I heard Street Fighter II Turbo and Samurai Showdown II are pretty good ports. But for the love of god, please stay away from the Vivid adult titles. LOL  x_x :hmm:

I'd spend the money on good games for another system first. The 3DO library is pretty weak, unless you're just looking for weirdness. Then it's great.

The system is truly stange.......but an important part of video game history and was part of the first gen of 32 bit machines. I recommend it, and the best games have already been mentioned. Stay far far far away from Shadow War of Succesion...................unless you like to play crap like me!

Definately worth picking one up. Since everyone else seemed to have covered most of the must-buy games, here is some information on console variations to help you decide which one is best for you. There are three different versions of the console (that I'm aware of). Here they are...

The FZ-1 (my favorite)
http://www.vidgame.net/3DO/3DO/fz1/fz1_sys.jpg

The FZ-10

The Goldstar GDO-101M

Here is a link to some console information.

PS. Pick yourself up a set of DOCS brand wireless controllers (If you can find them at a reasonable price).

The 3DO is well worth picking up espicially for the price its going for now. There are a lot of games that were very inovative for the system as well as some real junk.(I totally agree about Shadow War os Succesion as this was an abismal game). One of the things i like was the way the controllers daisey chained off each other. I paid $350 for mine when it was selling for $600 from a distributer i knew and the thought of some of my friends yanking my system on the floor(my friends were active type of players who would slam back real quick in the sofa) this way they were plugged into my controller protecing my 3DO.Some of the games that were made for the system were made by people making games for the new systems today. One of the biggest names I can think of is Naughty Dog. They made the game Way Of The Warrior which was a Mortal Kombat rip off some say buy was actually a lot of fun and had a ton of hidden stuff on the disc(some of which will porbaly never be found) and it had probaly the best sound trak for a game ( White Zombie).Anyway here is a small list of games to get if you are interested.

Alone in the dark - At the time was a great game as it was probaly the first Resident Evil style game ( very slow and awkward)

Crash and Burn - Which was a pack in racing combat game(bad acting but fun to play)

Escape From Monster Manor - FPS as Doom was all the rage at the time.

Fifa Soccer - Was a great game but i wasnt into soccer.

Madden Football - This game was the best version of Madden until PS2 as far as i was concerned

Need For Speed - This game was awesome as it was more of a driving simulator than a racing game. ( exterior veiw did not handle as good as inside the car view.

Road Rash - Agree with earlier post was best version and darn near close to best game for the system.

AD&D - Both were very good games ( Slayer and Death Keep)

Rteurn Fire $ RF Maps Of Death - Were a capture the flag style game but a lot of fun with a classical soundtrak.

Samurai Showdown - Was probably the best version for consoles besides the NEO GEO version( 3DO's version did nat have scaling)

Twisted: The Game Show - Was not a great game but was a decent party game as the charecters and commercials were pretty funny to watch.

Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels - This was a strategy game as you command a squad of marines with differant capablilities.

well anyway thats a few games if you have any doubts there are web sites with reviews and pictures to let you know which games to stay away from. The adult titles were bad as posted above. Most were just grainy video clips of porn movies or just God awefull games wrapped around the fact that they had nudity with almost no real gameplay at all.
But the system is well worth picking up as i still play mine frequently. Have fun .

It's a neat system and fun piece of forgotten video game history, but I wouldn't pay more than thirty dollars for it. I know I didn't!

Anyway, games like Super Street Fighter II Turbo and Crash 'n Burn do justify the purchase. I'm also told that Doctor Hawzer is a nifty precursor to the Resident Evil series, with fewer monsters but more traps.

Well, I sold a boxed set of them for $50 on ebay a few years ago (found them for $2.00 discount at Wal-Mart and I already had a set). I've seen them recently for around $50 boxed and above $20 opened.

I'm an avid 3DO collector. I've got all the US stuff plus nearly 100 import-only titles. Be sure to check out the searchable game lists (see link on both the DP site and at the top of this forum) and read through some 3DO entries.

I've been kicking around the idea of picking one of these up myself. For those who have played it, how's Quarantine? That's one of my favorite PC games of all time, and I'm wondering how faithful the 3DO port is. Does the game include the original soundtrack? I myself still have the 5 floppy disk version of Quarantine, but my friend had the CD version that featured a full music soundtrack. I remember most of it sucked, but there were one or two somewhat decent songs. It'd be more interesting from a nostalgia purpose if the game had the soundtrack. I'd be willing to pick up a 3DO just for this game if the port is faithful.....

And then there's the 3DO Blaster (http://assembler.roarvgm.com/3do_blaster/3do_blaster.html). Looks like that's an ISA card, though, so you'd need an oldish computer to do anything with it.

Everyone always brings up Plumbers Don't Wear Ties as an adult title. Were there any others?

Re: Quarantine. I don't think the game is horrible but it's not great either. You'll usually find it on a top ten disappointment list for 3DO owners, if not a top ten worst list! Still, like I said...

Re: Adult titles: The US has a bunch of titles from Vivid (yes, the same as the porn produciton company), though only one of these, "Mind Teazzer", is actually a game - and not a bad one. The only other US-released adult GAME is Neurodancer, a sort-of first-person-maze-hunt where you ultimately pay to have a stripper do her thing. There are a number of import adult titles, like Penthouse Interactive, The Virtual Cameraman series, Nice Body Interactive, and more. They're particularly difficult to find but "findable".

I had a 3DO very early in it's lifespan, I think early 1994. At the time it was pretty freaking amazing. You have to understand that up until that point, all we had were the side scrolling mario games and XMEN games and stuff like that on the 16 bit systems. So when the 3DO first hit, and I played Total Eclipse for the first time, it seemed totally amazing and totally mindblowing.

I really feel that 3DO kinda get's dogged in terms of people don't really talk much about it. Compared to the Jaguar and 32X, which seem to get more pub.

But I do feel that the 3DO is definitely worth owning, and it does have it's own flavor that is all it's own. Games like Gex and Total Eclipse and Road Rash, when they first arrived on the 3DO were totally amazing compared with the games that we had been playing up until that time. Of course Gex and Total Eclipse and Off-Road Interceptor and The Horde and stuff like that have also been made for the PSX and Saturn, and actually alot of times the Saturn or PSX port is actually better than the 3DO original, but I still prefer to play the original game on the console that it was made for.

Here is a list of some of my favorite 3DO games:

Out of this World - I think this might be the best version of OOTW. Beautiful backgrounds and great background music

Road Rash - Obviously, this is the game that originally put the 3DO on the map and caused alot of people to spend alot of money just to play this game.

FIFA International Soccer - I'm not a big soccer fan, but this game was amazing at the time. Tons of camera angles, this was one of the first sports games to ever come along and have tons of camera angles. The sound was particularly impressive.

Total Eclipse - Total Eclipse Turbo for the PSX is better, but I prefer to play the original game. This game was an early system seller for the 3DO until Road Rash came out.

Gex - Again, the Saturn and PSX versions of Gex are a little better, but again I prefer to play it on the system that it was originally designed for.

Escape From Monster Manor - This is a cool Doom clone with a haunted mansion type theme. It's a very basic game, but at the time it was pretty amazing.

Slayer - Similar to Monster Manor, but with more strategy and some RPG elements. Looks kinda corny now, but at the time it was pretty cool.

John Madden Football - When this game came out I had to have a 3DO. My all time favorite game was Madden 93 on the Genesis, and here was the very first Madden on a 32 Bit system. The Graphics and sounds looked totally amazing. This is a very solid game of Madden, and I personally think the graphics are better than the first Madden's on the Saturn and Playstation.

Night Trap - Call me crazy but I actually enjoy the FMV games. They are just so bad that they are good. I would have to say that this is the best version of Night Trap, because the video quality is much better than the Sega CD.

Captain Quazar - This is one of the few 3DO games that really look like a regular video game. It's a isometric action game.

Shockwave - Shockwave doesn't really look that great now, time hasn't been so kind, but when it first came out it was pretty freaking amazing. We hadn't seen anything quite like it at the time it was released

Slam N Jam 95 - Slam N Jam had incredible graphics for the time. Huge Sprites running around on the screen. Great sounds and sound effects. I though this game was a little too over the top, I prefer more simulation type games, but still at the time this game would make SNES and Genny owners super jealous.

Flashback - You would have to say that either the 3DO version or the Jaguar version was the best version of Flashback. I think the 3DO had better music.

Crash N Burn - This was the original pack in game, and I thought it was a pretty amazing game for late 1993. The graphics were light years beyond what people were used to in a racing game.

Those are some of my favorites. Overall, I would say that the 3DO hasn't held up that well over time. But I still think that it has it's place in video gaming history. When it first hit the scene in October of 1993, it was so far beyond what we were currently playing with, that it truly was amazing. When people first had the opportunity to play games like Crash N Burn, Total Eclipse and Road Rash in their own homes it was like owning a arcade machine in your house. Sure just a few years later the Playstation and Saturn totally destroyed it, but if you were playing a 3DO in late 1993 and 1994 and early 1995, you thought that you had the best game system ever made.

Part of the problem with the 3DO is that because the damn thing was so freaking expensive, they had to market it as more than a games machine. So the focus wasn't entirely on games in the beginning. That really set it back. When they finally realized the deal, the PSX and Saturn were just about to come out, and it was too little too late.

It would have been interesting if things were handled differently. If for example Matsushita (panasonic) could get more revenues from the games, and thus could take a huge hit on the hardware cost. If they could have done whatever needed to be done to get companies like Konami and Capcom on board right away with some of their most classic games.

The Star Control II remake (http://sc2.sourceforge.net) is using the original 3DO source code as its basis, but you probably knew that already.

Yup, I've been in that since day one. :D

I was going to make a thread about this -- version 0.3 is very stable and the game now has NEW remixed music for the re-release.
