I will never sell another game from my collection again! The last few times I did was when I sold my whole NES collection and the system for 60 bucks

I too back in the day sold my entire NES collection for something (can't remember what). That was when I didn't "collect" though, but lost a hell of a lot of money!

I had planned to start a thread similar to this but since it fits here I'll just throw it out there.

Anyone else out there nervous about a baseball card like collecting crash? Baseball cards used to be all the rage collecting (and value) wise, and after the market flooded those $100 cards went down to $50, then $20, then $10 where they find themselves today.

Can you imagine if video game collecting had the same situation. At first I'd be pissed since the dollar value of my collection would plummet. But it would be pretty sweet to pick up some now expensive or inflated games for about 10% of what they sell for now. So obviously the perfect scenario is to sell while they will bring the cash and then replace them for the love of collecting for much less than what you paid for them.

Not in the least. I'm not in this for the money, I'm in it for the games. Anyone in this hobby for financial reasons is probably in for a rude awakening. 99% of videogames lose 99% of their retail value. Only the truly rarest of the rare games hold any value worth talking about.

Definitely would sell my NES collection, but I couldn't ever part with my Genesis/SMS/32x collection. Im in the grey area on my atari though, because I would like to start a collection getting boxes and manuals for it, would look a lot better than the 40 carts I have laying around.

I don't think that I would sell my collection. I don't think I could live with the feeling of not having it. Unless I absolutely had to do it I don't think that I would do it for all the money in the world. Thats at least how I feel at the moment.

No way! Unless I absolutley needed money and selling my collection was the only way. I just hope it will never come to that...and even if it did, I would keep some of my games.

I wouldn't part with my Castlevania, Legacy of Kain or Metal Gear Solid stuff, everything else could go if the price was right... except my dreamcast crap.

Hell, the price will never be right. I'll only sell this stuff if I need to.
I have sold over 120 of my ps2 games to make space, and don't miss them one bit. I have sold most of my old Castlevania stuff when I was getting rid of my games as a moronic youth, and now am paying out the ass to recollect it all.

Never again!!!

I probably would sell my collection, if I was given 2 or 3 times more than what it costed for me to get all of it. I don't have many rare games, so there wouldn't be any problem buying them all back.

Well sooner or later we all have to choose. We probably won't be enjoying our collections anymore with 70 or something like that.

I would feel empty without my collection, like losing a friend. My collection is like a child. Well maybe not a child but a giga pet. I feed it and watch it grow. Even clean it up and make it look nice when I'm bored.

I've been slowly wittling down my collection. So much of it is in boxes at my parent's place, and I just don't have the room for it. Hopefully I can work it down to a more managable size.

The 2600 and Intellivision games have been the first to go, and it will probably be the NES and SNES games next. Those will be a bit harder to let go of, but I can always keep my favorite games.

Well they should have sold them when they had the chance. If I found out one of my Micheal Jordan Basketball cards, went for 1000 bucks, I'd sell it so fast!

I've been playing video games for about 23 years and I've had my original NES console (which was my first console) for about 18 years. There's only two conditions that could make me sell my collection.

1) If I get bored with video games. which considering how long I've been into video games I just don't see that happening ever. There's always going to be something fun to buy and play.

2) Or if I become so poor and desperate that I need to sell them to have a place to sleep and food to eat. I hope that never happens.

Also, what can you do with baseball cards anyway? Look at them? They have no function. Even if you decide to unwrap the mint game it will always have a function...given that you have the correct console, of course.

Cards and Comic Books were hyped up products in the 90s, when the value soared because of some hocus pocus that comic books can fund your college education, etc.

Ouch since then.

It sucks now that cards and comics arn't worth anything. When I was younger my dad and I would just go to comic book warehouses and just buy all kinds of stuff. We have thousands of comics, I'm waiting for them to go up a little bit in value and just sell them all off. Same with cards, I collected those as a kid and now they arn't worth anything.

Anyways, back to the topic...

I sold my Saturn and my SNES back in the day just because it wasn't something I was interested in anymore and didn't want it. Now that I am collecting I wish I would of never sold my SNES.

In my collection now I would sell everything probably except for my SNES stuff. The SNES is what I had when I was a kid and it's what I grew up with, so that is what I mainly collect, the other stuff I just collect to collect.

I have bunch of Comic book collection from way back I don't mind selling if the price offered is good enough. Other than that, my game collection will never leave me. Unless I desperately need the money.

At this point in time I don't plan on selling my collection to get rid of it. Although I don't play a good chunk of them, they are nice to have on the side for looks, ahs, and if I ever want to just pop them in and enjoy them in their original form. The only things I like to emulate are older games I can't find, generally falling under 2D. CD-based games take up too much space and generally have the same length of game time as cartridge so it's a space time situation. :)

If it came down to it though, yes I would sell it all off. I'm sure I could somehow manage to let myself just play PC games or something, but I can't quite games altogether. It would feel very weird from my point of view currently, but who knows because sometimes time can change everything.

Yes, I would likely sell most, if not all, of my collection if the opportunity arose.

I have recently realized that I am a gamer at heart. While I like my games to be in pristine cosmetic condition, my purpose of having them is to enjoy them. Personally, letting them sit on a shelf to be admired is vain and wasteful, in my opinion. I do have a small number of complete games, but in retrospect, I bought them at a whim and have no real attachment to them. I'll never have a complete collection of any system, and that's fine by me.

In any case, yes I would sell most of my collection if offered a decent sum.

i've been there, multiple times....years ago, when i was like 10 or 11 years old, i already had a whole lot of games, mainly nintendo stuff ( still my favorite), then i sold it all for whatever reason....i guess there wasn't even a reaso nt oit, i just decided to sell it one day,i wasn't a collector then,i just liked games and bought a lot of them....ok,fastforward couple of years, still into gaming, and even more then before, over time i got some systems again, mainly the then-new stuff, n64,ps1, then came ps2,xbox and gamecube....so,even though it wasn't a real collection yet, i had been thinking about really becoming a collector now.

however, some 6 years ago, i started getting into pro wrestling as well, first watching it, then buying some figures etc, and it snowballed from there, within a year or 2 i had a load of dvd, books, figures and other things, thus being a collector.

Then, last year, i had the oppertunity to buy a fully working, in great shape pinball machine from wwf royal rumble (wrestling), BUT it costed a hell lot of money that i didn't have, and there were other bidders on it as well so i had to think very very fast.

i thought about it for couple of days until i really had to make a decision, and by this time, wrestling is my biggest hobby/joy/passion in life, i still like games, and looking at my consoles i had then,my heart broke even before they were sold.....yet i decided to go through with it because i would be even more heart-broken if i let that pinball machine pass by.

So here i am, with my pinball machine, and with only a gamecube left.

Some days wake up and am 100% sure i am gonna "get into" games again like i used to be, then next day i'm like " nah,not start all over again, you'll just sell it eventually again probably".....so what i comes down to is that i made a choice, i had 2 great hobby's,and that's too much for me to be honest, it's gotten to the point were i even fee lkinda guilty when i buy something other then wrestling stuff, seriously.....if i buy something quite expensive these days, just moments after i bought it i go " damn, why did i do that, i could've bought this or that for my collection with that money".....think i'm obsessed ? you're probably right....the bottom line i turned my heart into a stone and made a very difficult dicision,i'm more happy to have 1 huge collection instead of 2 not-so-huge ones.

Having a very small collection, having only been in it for a few years and gaming being an everyday thing in my life,
it would kill me to give up my collection, so much so I would never collect again.

The only reason I would give up my collection would be to
save myself from being homeless.

When I die I want all my stuff to be locked inside a vault deep withing the earth or under my grave. LOL

I'm sure I've sold off most everything in my "original" collection, dating back to when I was a kid. However, I have "replaced" a lot of old 2600, NES, SNES and Genesis games that ended up getting lost, stolen, sold, destroyed or whatever other fate you can imagine.

The only stuff I am currently looking to sell would be my collection of "broken" systems, which I am looking into right now.

I have been considering selling off my collection for a few months now. Im glad there was a thread on this here as there are some interesting comments. Too bad they are a few years old though :P Would like to see newer ones as well. Anyway, for me its been a combination of loosing interest and lack of space available. I found the first few years of collecting a real thrill but it has gotten to the point in which I have lost almost all interest in my games. Back then I would have responded to the open question with a simple 'No'. A few months ago the idea of selling out crossed my mind alot and I said 'maybe'. But now its technically a matter of when I will sell it. I dont have much invested in it. Maybe $2000 tops. But I would feel better off just selling it. I think im acting normal but has anyone else here burned out?

It's not something I'd ever consider doing outside of an absolute last resort tbh. My collection is the centrepiece of my recrational activities and selling it would be kinda like selling a leg. Sure, I'd live on without it, but I wouldn't know what to do with myself and I'd be forever going round in circles.

I've actually thought about doing this a few times over the last year or so. It's not something I'd ever really want to do but for the right amount of money($20,000 and up) I would consider it. But it would be one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make, especially considering how long it's taken me to acquire some of my collection. Theres definitely parts of it that I'd never be able to find again because some of it is that damn rare. So hopefully I never really have to sell it all, but maybe parts of it.

Glad someone revived this thread.

Personally, I would sell in a heartbeat for the right price. My collection is enormous (probably 30K if sold individually at high eBay prices) and most of it just sits in boxes.

Someone here noted that they were going to be 30K in debt ... Don't fret, I will be 120K in debt. (law school).

Collecting was a lot of fun when I was younger, but I just don't have the room or the passion anymore unfortunately.

I actually plan on selling everything accept a few grails at some point. Expect to see Complete in box Nes, Genesis, Game Gear, Super Nintendo, Sega CD, Turbo Grafx, etc. sets, at some time in the not too distant future.

Of course, I'll keep you all posted on that when I do.

Regards,

- Dave

I would.

If I had to, as an extreme emergency, I would gladly do so.

If it's for the sake and well being of my family, and thus myself, I would sell in an instant.

Video games are just material things, but family and health is something one should always cherish and take care off.

No, unless someone was willing to offer a stupidly high price (which will never happen). I figure even if in the future I become burnt out or lose interest in gaming and sold it all, I'd come back to it and want my old stuff back. But then I only really buy games I like/enjoy. I suppose it'd be different if I went around buying every game I saw.

I don't think I would. I would consider selling it if I needed the money, but other then that, I would probably just keep it. I just don't see myself losing interest since gaming was such a big part my past, and I'll always have a place for it. I have "taken long breaks" from gaming, but I've never lost interest. Who knows though, I may change my mind someday, but from the way I see it, I'll always have my little collection.

I recently had to sell a good chunk of my collection. I was going to start of business then was laid off and my house went into foreclosure.

I needed $2000. I had to sell some of the cooler and rarer parts of my collection. I had a 2600 kiosk and sold it for the $2000. I also sold some other systems and games I had for about $1000. It sucked parting with everything especially since I probably cannot get another 2600 kiosk but it was something I needed to do. A couple months before this I was also laid off and sold some stuff for about $700 to pay for gas and stuff.

My collection now is considerably much smaller and almost all of the rarer and cooler stuff is gone. I was able to keep most of my Virtual Boy and my 2600 collections and my SNES kiosk though. Once I get back on my feet I will start collecting again. I see my collection kind of as an investment. It is fun to have when times are good and can be sold for a profit to bridge the gap when times are bad.

I wonder if I had a previous post in here.....

Would I? I'd like to say no but reality says different. The idea of selling EVERYTHING be it in partial or as a whole would require a great deal of thought. Why would I be selling it? What would I hope to gain from selling it? What ever the reason it would have to be a last ditch effort to prevent something so drastic that even if I didnt sell it off, I'd loose it anyways. I'm not sure I could sell it for food. While quality food is expensive, I'd sell cans and buy ramen. Housing isnt cheap by any means but if I was under the threat of loosing the place I reside in, I may as well sell off everything I couldnt fit in a suitcase because what ever I gained from my collection would only prolong me keeping this place for so long. Doubtfully long enough for me to find work to afford not to loose everything. If I was dieing, well I realy wouldnt care what happened to all my worldy posessions as I couldnt take them with me reguardless how I enjoyed them.

Point is, even if I got five times the amount I paid in return, would it amount to anything great? Something tells me it wouldnt. While I'd have alot of money, it wouldnt be enough to drasticly improve my life. Just enough to get myself further into another hobby/obsesion. That realy wouldnt help and that's maybe a realy long answer.

I've sold my collection in the past a few times and each time I get a bigger collection later. I've done so for a few reasons, it was always a necessity. If I really needed the cash for a life emergency I wouldn't hesitate to sell my collection. Having said that, both times when I did sell off my collection it was "most" not "all." There's still several things I'd hold back on selling either b/c they'd be difficult/expensive to replace or b/c they hold sentimental value. The sentimental stuff is not worth a lot of money, so I'd definitely hang onto that, but the other stuff, if I really needed the cash, I'd sell it. I have a wife and we're starting a family, so I can definitely see reasons why I'd have to sell this stuff. That's all it is, really, is stuff. If you cling to material possessions too tightly you'll lose hold on what's really important in life.

tbqh I'm not sure, probably for the right price. My game collection doesn't have as much of a sentimental value as you guys are saying, and I have become more of a gamer and reseller lately. Whenever I find a game for cheap I don't want to play I argue with myself over whether to sell it or not, or keep it for collection. I could use the money for other things and the game would just sit there, but I also like collecting them for some reason...

I once had a fairly extensive NES collection, most of the games purchased back when first released. I also went on a large buying spree (during my honeymoon, no less). I quickly realized that when I actually sat down with my NES and started playing these games, the experience was not what I remembered from my youth. The games are still fun now and then, but not fun enough to have that much money sunk into them. I sold off my entire NES collection and have not regretted it. If I want to play those games, I will load up an emulator or hit the Wii VC.

A few months ago, I realized that I was too busy playing GBA, Wii, and PS1 games to bother with my PS2 games. I already have ~40 PS1 games to enjoy and most of my ~25 PS2 games were sequels to games I had yet to play, or games I had already finished and would never touch again. I decided that my PS1 would probably keep me entertained for the next 10 years, so I put my PS2 collection in the closet am trading/selling it off.

I can't imagine ever selling off my PS1 collection. I have a relatively large GBA collection currently, but I could see myself selling those off in five years. The DS as well.

Luckily the floor was carpeted! har har har! Don't worry we made up later that night on top of the games....muahahhahahah

Actually, I have been thinking about this recently and I think I eventually will sell off all my stuff. I have no children or nieces or nephews to give to, and I don't think I want them to be part of the estate sale when I die (I am past 40 y/o...LOL). I have consoles and games from the Odyssey 2 all the way to the PS2 that I have invested heavily in, and it would be nice to recoup some of my investment costs.

I sell off everything I don't play or like. As I play the games, I decide whether I'll keep them or not, and if I don't like em...off they go.

If I had to sell to pay for food or a roof over my head, I would (well, maybe not food), but chances are very high that I wouldn't ever sell most of it. Even if I had to sell, I'd cherry pick the stuff I could bear to part with and get back later first. My collection is worth around 25-30K right now if I sold EVERYTHING for high eBay prices, and that would take MONTHS.

Basically....barring horrible damning financial difficulties...NEVER!

Wait a second...You only keep the stuff you like and play, and your collection STILL is worth $25-30k? What the hell are you playing, Nintendo World Championships? :)

Quoted for truth.

Although I would like to think I wouldn't sell of any of my main collection, if the right amount of cash was offered or if circumstances were bad enough, I would. Let's be realistic here, they're video games, we collect and play them for entertainment. When you're strapped for cash the first logical thing to cut out of your budget is entertainment.

I can't imagine ever selling off my PS1 collection.

It's weird to think that I wrote this less than a year ago. These past few weeks, I have considered selling off my PS1 collection. I haven't played it since probably a few weeks after I wrote the above quote. I have been too busy with the DS, Wii, and board games. The PS1 is collecting dust and honestly, the games seem far too dated now.

One word: NEVER! I don't care how much you want for my stuff, unless I have a spare laying around, I will not sell anything.

For years, I collected pretty much anything and everything from NES and up. I had stacks of games that I had never even played; just sitting in boxes or whatever. I told myself numerous times that I would never sell anything either.

So, as I got older and shifted my priorities around, carrying around these huge boxes of unplayed games with me wherever I moved became tiresome, so late last year I made the decision to part with the majority of my games that I know I would never play. I ended up selling off a huge portion of my stuff, even the expensive rare games and factory-sealed stuff. The initial decision to part with your stuff is the hardest, I will admit. Even when I was boxing up stuff to ship, I was getting a little emotional...you know, these are games that I bought brand new back in the day and have had for years!

But, once you get the ball rolling, you really don't even care anymore. I've already forgotton about most of the games that I have sold, because I never really played them. The ones that I got rid of that I did play; I just hope that somebody else is experiencing the same level of entertainment that I got out of that game once. With all of the money that I made, I was able to pay off some bills and do some nice things for my gf and myself. Ironically, with the extra cash, I was also able to buy those hard-to-find games that I've always wanted to play (Panzer Dragoon Saga, for example).

Nowadays, I only buy a game if I intend on playing it. I've passed up many great deals on stuff simply because I know that it would just sit in a box and eventually I'd be right back to where I started :)

I don't know what it is, but I think I have lost the passion for video games. I moved into my new house last August and the majority of the stuff is still boxed up from the move. I've pulled my PS3 out so I can play Rock Band and crank the sound as loud as I want. I also hooked up my Nintendo Wii and played a New Super Mario Bros a wopping 5 or so times before losing interest.

I still enjoy refurbishing Nintendos and reselling my duplicate games, but I haven't even unpacked my main NES stuff. I just open the boxes occasionally to toss in a game that I get from a lot that I don't already have in my collection.

So, I wander into my spare room every now and then and look at all the boxes, plastic crates, and Rubbermaid containers full of stuff from the original pong all the way up to modern day stuff and wonder what's the point of keeping all of this around? I really don't have any interest in playing any of it right now and haven't for quite some time.

Nobody else in my family is as passionate about this stuff as I once was, so hanging onto it for heirlooms sake is pointless. People mention passing their collection on to their kids. I'm turning 30 in less than a week and when I look at the way my love life has gone (or hasn't gone is maybe more appropriate), I find myself seriously questioning if I will ever have kids to leave the collection to.

One dream I have is to have my house paid off in full. If I did that, I think I could work less and focus more on traveling and spending time with the people important in my life. Any money from a sale would bring me closer to that dream.

If I do end up selling, I would keep the majority of my NES stuff, because that system of my childhood. I would also keep the small PS3 collection I have, because I enjoy Rock Band. It also has an interesting story about how I got it, which always brings back fun memories.

As others have stated, in a dire financial emergency, I would sell everything. I keep around an 8 month emergency fund though, so it would have to be a pretty big emergency.

I'll tell you what my wife told me when I was in your same situation: Put your game room together, set it up how you want it, before you consider selling anything that you might regret later. Taking stuff in and out of boxes is a pain, and looking at a mess of boxes is way less aesthetically pleasing than gazing upon a nicely organized, shelved collection. I still have yet to complete the advice, of course, but I did listen. :)

Maybe parts of it, but depending on the console, it wouldn't be cheap. I will probably never sell my Dreamcast and N64 collection (those were the first two and my largest), and selling my Super Famicom collection would require a massive amount of money.

Quite honestly, i'd really love to pass down this collection to next generation so they can remember these awesome games.

I'd sell my collection if I felt like I had to. That's about all it comes down to. I'm not foolish enough to hold onto my games if I was to desperately need money, but I'm also not inclined to sell them either. I have no clue how much my collection as a whole is worth, though, and it's kind of scary to think about that, haha. I don't have any ridiculously high value items, but I do have plenty of stuff, with many items worth a decent chunk (that's what happens when you're an RPG fan). I'm sure I have a fair amount of money tied up in it all, but I guess it's also comforting in a way that it's there in a pinch, even if I would be very sad to part with it all. So many Americans spend WAY more on frivolous stuff than I do, packing their houses with junk, and it's all basically worthless. At least I know I could get something out of my game collection.

I would gladly sell my entire collection if a single person or small group offered to buy the whole lot for the right price. The only problem, besides finding that person/group, is that my life would suddenly lose 99% of its meaning. I literally wouldn't know what to do anymore. Hell, I'd probably just start collecting again.

I've considered it... then I sat there and realised I would regret it the second it was sold and want to rebuild it/buy it back.

To be honest, I quite sold a lot of stuff over the last two or three years. My collection never was that big but I did own quite a good amount of stuff. I sold the GameGear and all games, the Dreamcast and the x-Box. I also sold various games from all consoles and at this moment I just keep the stuff I actually enjoy playing. On one hand I did use the money (I didn't sell any real valuable items so I just made little money with it, but if the machine doesn't give you any more cash you can't be picky), on the other hand I have so much stuff in my appartment why keep stuff I won't play or enjoy in any other way?

I'm in the process of it. Since I wanted to try switching to PC games.

Core first step which is near complete, was ridding myself of expensive JRPGs I didn't give a crap about. Glad I've held back on buying games basically just for the Atlus/NIS/Xseed logos anymore!

I have sold a few things, nothing out of my retro collection, just some crap in my ps2/ps3 collection. I dont think i could part with what I have left though, it may not be much, but its staying in my hands!

With the hard economy lately, the thought has occurred. But I look at escalating prices on ebay and realize it would cost me a small fortune to get even part of it back, and at a much larger expense than I have invested to this point. I am a person to never say, "never", and could sell parts of it if the need arose. I estimate overall collection value between $5-10K, but piecing it out over ebay or Game Gavel would take a long time to raise money in a pinch. I have whole sections of my collection that receive no play: PSX, Saturn, Colecovision, Intellivision, Jaguar, etc.

I guess my goal in collecting is that some day I will retire and have ample time to enjoy systems and games I don't get to in my busy life at the moment. Hopefully, I can hold onto most or all of it until that day arrives.

But, I've Always regretted it. My old collections are long and gone and will never get them back [ sad ] I did get one back, but the others cost to much now days. Their is also something about owning the hard copy's of games... but lets face it, we do not have enough time in life to play them all. New games come out all the time, and we have way more options to play games today. So, it comes down to collecting only..and we all have some kind of squirrel in all us?

The thought has crossed my mind lately. I like the idea of playing my old games, but I haven't had the motivation to play any of them for a long time. However, that is changing. I'm glad I decided not to. I know that I would regret it later and I would end up trying to get it back and it would cost me a lot more.
