View Full Version : Most Disappointing "2" Sequel?

Let me ask you this.

We've all had that favorite game that we eagerly awaited the sequel for. I don't mean those never-ending game series with endless sequels like Final Fantasy, I mean that SECOND game, the true sequel to an original favorite. There have been many many classic "top ten" type sequels, from the memorable Mortal Kombat II and Sonic II through recent greats like Metal Gear Solid 2 and Tony Hawk 2...

What "follow up to the original" left you wishing it had been done differently?

Destruction Derby 2 for the PSX/one.

I think i'm in the minority here "not sure", but I loved the first game, but hated the second. Most reviews at the time seemed to say that the sequel was better, but I didn't see it. The controls were too floaty, and there wasn't nearly as much of an impact when you hit other cars, and the physics just didn't feel as realistic.

I'm not sure how they are both viewed today by the masses, but I would still love a solid sequel to that game, cause the first one "imo", was just great.

Skate or Die 2 for the NES. The hilarious opening cinema convinces you that you're stepped into something good, but after five minutes of clumsily skating through the streets of an ugly town, desperately trying to avoid its ugly citizens, you come to the conclusion that you just stepped in dog crap. Of all the NES games that should NOT have been turned into painfully long and overcomplicated adventures (but were anyway), Skate or Die has to be on the top of the list.

Startropics 2 - Zoda's Revenge (NES): as varied with an interesting story plot, strategic boss fights, surprise elements and atmosphere (!) the original was, the sequel was a big disappointment. It lacked all of the above, and was an uninspired, soulless clone of the first by sticking to all the formal gameplay elements of the original.

Devil May Cry 2 (PS2): see above! :)

If you compare originals and disappointing sequels, you can figure out what makes a great game vs. just a good or average one. The great ones have achieve identification with the game created by atmosphere (graphics, sound), varied gameplay, and story plot. The average sequels can have good or even better graphics, same gameplay elements, and similar story, but what they lack is identification with the game achieved by atmosphere; that's what makes them uninspired and soulless.

Well remember the Japanese thought us American's were stupid...so they gave us a simple game, to top it off a game that they ripped off...well not really ripped off cuz they bought it...even still SMB 2 the japanese one was still kinda like the 1st one...just more complicated...i still sometimes wished they would have done it differently too tho

This thread has Driver 2 for the Playstation written all over it...

The original Driver remains one of my favorite games of all time. I still rerun the president's mission or play survival on the streets of San Francisco at least once a month. I think it is pure fun and it blew me away the first time I played it (once I got out of the parking garage, that is). I have 3 memory cards full of saved missions, and used to spend hours in the director mode fine-tuning replays until they rivaled scenes from Bullitt. Yes, the final mission was too hard (took me 3 weeks to beat it the first time), but beating that game gave me a sense of satisfaction that has been hard to top.

When I got wind that a sequel was in the works, I was constantly checking the web for news, leaks, screenshots, whatever I could find. My interest only climbed as I heard of on-foot missions, curved roads and the ability to drive any car in the game! Got frustrated as the release date kept getting kicked back, but it finally arrived. To this day, Driver 2 is the only game I have purchased on launch day, and it will probably be the last (I did get it at Best Buy with a free $10.00 gift card though...cheap bastard to the end).

Started to play it as soon as I got home, and could tell right away things had changed from the original, but not for the better. The badness of the on-foot missions make those in Rebel Strike look like genius...the curved roads did nothing to enhance gameplay, the graphics looked no better (perhaps worse) than the original, and the pop-up was hideous. The slow-down was pretty bad too, but not until the ambulance mission did I experience how bad. In the middle of a high-speed chase, the screen would slow and then freeze for a second or two, making it damn near impossible to avoid a wreck when the action continued. Boy was I pissed!

I did eventually finish the game, but most of the fun of the original was gone. Because my hopes were so high, I've never been nearly as disappointed by a sequel as I was by Driver 2. GTA III was the the game that D2 wanted to be and I enjoyed it a great deal (especially the mission where you got to take out a thinly disguised Tanner). But now that the long-promised Driver 3 is on it's way (delayed again, sound familar?), I find myself checking for updates and screenshots again. I hope they've managed to do the original Driver justice in D3...but even if they haven't, it couldn't make me feel as bad as Driver 2 did.

The European Strider 2 is an easy answer, but that was later said to be out of the Strider canon.

DMC2 is a good choice. I feel bad for the guy who directed it -- he was a former game journalist! His newest project is Monster Hunter, and that seems to be decent.

Blaster Master 2. I refuse to even call it a game. :bullshit:

You mean the Genesis game? Everybody seems to hate this game with a burning passion, but I just can't figure out why. The graphics are nice, and it plays fairly well. The level designs aren't particularly clever, but I've played worse sequels than this.

Let me add Final Fight 2, Zelda II: The Adventures of Link, and Castlevania II: Simon's Quest to this list. Final Fight 2 was a rather limp continuation of the adventures of Mike Haggar and his friends. The addition of Carlos (essentially Strider with a Latino name) didn't make up for the painfully boring gameplay and lackluster enemies.

I never warmed up to the original Zelda, but Zelda II was even less compelling. Turning it into a side-scrolling platformer with RPG elements took all the fun out of the game... you could either explore the countryside or fight enemies, but not both. In addition to that, some of the caves contained foes that were damned near impossible to kill without tedious level building. I actually had more fun with Pack-In-Video's quirky Rambo.

Castlevania II is the poster child of one of the most aggravating trends of the NES era... taking the arcade play mechanics of a series and transplanting them into a stale adventure. This almost never worked on the NES, because the once satisfying arcade gameplay is watered down to the point of being unenjoyable, and the level design is too bland and simplistic to be as engrossing as a straight adventure game. Sure, Symphony of the Night did eventually prove that a Castlevania game with depth could work, but Simon's Quest demonstrated that the late 80's was NOT the right time for such a game.

Sonic Adventure 2. Not the worst let down, but nowhere near as good as the first. Sonic Heroes is even worse than SA2.

DMC2 (that's easy)

But, the king of kings for THE SHITTIEST sequel...

Rastan: Saga II

The arcade game is one of my all time favorite platformers, and the SMS version was pretty good as well. Rastan Saga II in all shapes and forms is garbage.

That's pretty harsh claiming Rambo is better than Zelda II. Sometimes I feel like the only person who likes that game.

The only really bad sequel that comes to my mind right now is Strider Returns Journey to Darkness. The level design was bland as hell in that game, and the music was awful. Capcom eventually made up for that game by making their own Strider 2.

Actraiser 2, SNES - The first Actraiser was great and innovative. I was disappointed that the sequel lacked the originality that made the first so appealing.

Driver 2, Playstation - Awful, very disappointing.

Very odd, as this is the only NES Castlevania I can stand playing.

As for my input, how about that horrible turf "Timestalkers" when compared to the genesis classic "Landstalker"? Ick...

I really enjoy Zelda II. I'm a big fan of Mario 2. Castlevania 2 was the only NES Castlevania I liked at all.

DMC 2 was the biggest let down for me, given how much I liked the original. MGS is one of my top 5 games of all time, I couldn't stand MGS2 (although I plan to give it another shot). Actraiser 2 was a horrible let down.

For a couple that haven't been mentioned -

I was really disappointed by Powerstone 2. I have a great love for the strategic action of the first one, and was really disappointed when I played the sequel.

Snowboard Kids 2 is another candidate here. They took what was an almost perfect racing formula, and just distorted it all to hell.

I can't believe nobody has listed what has to be the most universally lambasted sequel ever, the game that is the definition of sequels gone wrong - Spy Hunter 2. That game is as hated as the original is loved. If you haven't played Spy Hunter 2, don't. I'm glad that I didn't actually see a Spy Hunter 2 until the early 90s, as it was so disappointing then that I don't even want to think what my reaction would have been when the game was new.

California Games II is one of my biggest gaming disappointments ever. I loved California Games *so* much and when 2 game out ... what the hell happened?

Impossible Mission II was also a big let down. It wasn't terrible, but it became so complex that it lacked the simplicity and innovation the second one had. Kind of like Hacker II, I guess. They tried to make it a sequal by just making it more complicated.

Would everyone hate Actraiser 2 if it had a different name? I understand the dissapointment that the land developing stages were removed. This dissapointed me at first too. On the other hand I play A LOT of games and I actually appreciate the challenge. I find myself putting this cart in quite often and trying to see if I can best it. I always get stuck in that damn underground jail maze thing. I think most games are too easy and a decent action game that makes you really work is a good thing in my book.

My sentiments exactly. I remember pre-ordering this one and playing through SMW1 like 3 times the week before in anticipation of this "new" Mario. I was soooooooo dissappointed. Why does everyone like this so much? It introduced me to many of the game elements in the modern VG world that I loathe. Why must I get "100%" on every level???? I HATE forced replayability with a passion.

I loved Yoshi's Island. The graphic style, special effects, story. It was perfect. Different. A nice change. In fact, all 5 of the Mario games are completely different.

The original had that nice linear 4 level worlds, 8 worlds with some warps. A classic style and graphics.

SMB2 (US) had a complete change of pace. A totally new domain to explore. 7 worlds with 3 levels each (Except the last.) A new boss. New enemies. A totally new style of game play.

SMB3 brought us back to the original style of play, but with a whole new feel. World maps. Each world had a different number of levels and castles, bosses. It was a whole new experience.

SMW took it a step further. A huge world map divided into different zones. Totally new levels and a completely new style.

Yoshi's Island was a brand new feel. And while not a "Mario Bros" game per say, it was a new experience. Six new worlds. Sis levels each. New moves, graphics that rocked. Special effects powered by the Super FX2 chip. It was a whole new experience!

How anyone can not like the series as a whole is beyond me. I have all five of those on my GBA and that makes me so happy. I've beaten them all except SMB1 which I only got today. But I'm gonna try again tonight.

1, 3 is great. 2 is okay. World is greater then great. Yoshis island... O_O . No!!! It is just too much different. Makes me wanna kill myself when I play it. Mario 2 was messed up for a reason but still was fun. I jsut cant stand yoshis island. I know Im complaining a lot but ahh! It jsut was the biggest dissapointment ever!!! i bet if they made it more mario world 1 style, they would have sold well over twice as many copies. I despised the Legend of Mana. Compared to the Secret of Mana, the Legend was such a wash. And yes, I realize that Legend wasn't the first sequel in the series, but I don't count Sword of Mana (GB Final Fantasy whatever it was) as the first in the series when compared to Secret.

Oh, and I really liked Simon's Quest. I thought it was an innovative jump for the series. In fact, the only Castlevanias I disliked were the N64 ones.

I don't seem to remember people hating SMB2 back in the day as much as people like to remmeber they did. Sure we all knew it was different but for the most part it seemed that people liked it. I mean, it's one of the best selling NES games(third I believe). If everyone did hate it so much back then I doubt that would be the case.

It wasn't untill after SMB3 that people felt it was the weaker of the bunch. And it wasn't untill more recenlty when people learned the story behind it that it didn't feel like a "real" mario game anymore.

But to answer the question, I was more disapointed in Zelda II.

I absolutely loved Carmageddon on my Mac. Played the hell out of it, got a bunch of patches and hacks for it, retextured my cars, etc. Carmageddon II came out, I picked it up immediately, and didn't like it. No matter the speed of your machine or how powerful your graphic card was it played choppy, they added a bunch of missions to the game rather than just letting you race (the point of the game), and just bogged the game down with crap. Sure, the graphics engine was improved, but the structure of the game was trashed when they moved away from the racing aspect.

I can tell you that every teenager during christmas 1988 had a huge hard-on for Mario 2 and Zelda 2. They were almost impossible to find and the demand was huge. I remember my local news station running a story on these games.

Any hate now is likely from someone who wasn't into the NES at that time or maybe just retconning their memory.

I get really tired of people saying that no one who played Zelda II back in the day hated it. I had plenty of friends back then who loathed the game with a passion. I didn't get an NES until later, but I can tell you right now that turning Zelda into a side scroller was a huge mistake. Glad some people got some enjoyment out of it, but I don't even consider it to be Zelda, and I know there was a pretty large backlash against it back in the day.

At any rate, my vote goes to Alundra 2. All the things that made the original good were gone and what you were left with was an ugly ugly game full of forced humor and stupid, ridiculous set-ups. It's like someone decided to make a B-movie for the sequel or something.

I also enjoy Zelda 2. I enjoyed the challenge back then and I still play through it at least once a year. The departure worked for me in this case, but I'm glad they didn't do it again.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Final Fantasy II. By II I mean the original Japanese II, or the one on Dawn of Souls, Anniversary Edition, you get the point. I'm playing through it right now after finishing I and it is kinda painful. The leveling/skill system is inconsistent and broken (I do get it and I understand the logic, but that doesn't mean I have to like it), the map is annoying to navigate, the monsters/dungeons are harder than the bosses and I can't go what seems like more than 5 steps without a random encounter. I've put some time into this one and right now it's just a personal vendetta I have against this game. I will finish it, but I will NEVER do it again.

Sadly, Chrono Cross from Chrono Trigger, sure it was a good game, but no Trigger

I agree with that 100%. The story was cryptic and made little sense. To many characters to play as, almost all with no personality outside of a 1 sentence intro speach when they joined. Little in common with the original game. All in all, it seemed to have been desighned as showcase of PSX graghics and sound over gameplay...The graghics even today are still good and the music is excellent. Cant say the same about the gameplay though.:|

I believe this sequel is what killed the series, despite there being a few fanboys of it [chrono cross].

Paper mario isnt as good as Mario RPG but its not terrible. Its worth playing if you havnt yet, its probably one of the better RPGs released since it came out [RPG quality has shot down since the SNES era imo]. When I first read the title of this thread, I knew that for NES, the choice picks that everyone seems to complain about are Zelda 2, Castlevania 2 and Mario 2. I really loved Castlevania 2 back in the day, and still like it. Mario 2 I liked, did not like when I discovered the truth, and then came into an opinion that the game was okay, although more difficult than Mario 1 and 3, but not as good. However, I have been playing the game a lot recently, and rediscovered how fun the game is. Looking at it from a marketing standpoint, if the game was released in America as Doki Doki Panic (or however you want to translate that), it probably would not have sold many copies. Nintendo felt the game was worthy of a stateside release, make it Mario 2, and all of a sudden lots of people are playing the game and enjoying it. In the end, I'm glad that I got to play the game, good stuff.

As for Zelda 2, it is another NES game which receives so much hate. I only played both of the NES Zelda games probably around 1998/9 for the first time, never had them back in the day. I enjoyed them both a lot, and although I found the second Zelda a bit difficult at spots, still feel that it is a solid game.

As a few others have mentioned regarding SMW 2, I enjoy it, but do not consider it a true sequel to SMW. As great as SMW was, I might have preffered a true sequel as opposed to SMW 2, but the game as an independent is still fun.

There aren't that many sequels that have really let me down. Most sequels I enjoy. Super C and Mario Kart 64 disappointed me the most, but those don't have "2" in the title.

Here are a few titles that let me down:

God of War 2: The gameplay was there, the story didn't interest me. I mainly just screwed around and zoned out through a story I didn't care for.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Same as God of War 2. Playing the game wasn't bad, but the characters and story weren't very interesting. Plus, it seemed like there was a lack of boss battles compared to 1 and 3. Metal Gear Solid games are all about bosses for me.

RPG Maker II: I really enjoyed making screwy games for the first RPG Maker. There seemed to be less options and less screwy enemies and characters in the second one, thus I could never make an "Angry Donkey and the Legend of the Barnyard Warlock" sequel game for the sequel.

Kid Icarus 2: Disappoints me by not existing. Maybe I should have made that with RPG Maker II.

Those are the only ones that really stand out. I've suffered other small letdowns, but nothing major. I've also suffered some bigger let downs on sequels past 2.

I didn't own any consoles during a large part of the Playstation/Saturn/N64 era so that might have saved me from a few disappointments. Also, I never had a Genesis as a kid. Growing up a little poor and not buying a lot of sequels probably helped me not be upset at bad sequels.

Personally I would say Alundra 2 for the PS1. I was so disapointed because I loved Alundra 1 and their cut scenes, puzzles, etc etc....then I got this one and I was like......ok....this sucks....

Actually Kid Icarus 2 does exist for Game Boy, although it doesn't have "2" in the title.

Paper mario isnt as good as Mario RPG but its not terrible. Its worth playing if you havnt yet, its probably one of the better RPGs released since it came out [RPG quality has shot down since the SNES era imo]. Also the Gamecube release is better than Mario RPG by a tad and has alot of replay to it with a Arena. All 3 are great games and I played them to death...the WII release however sucks and killed the series [imo]. :)

Paper Mario's not as good, it's actually better. :P

Super Mario Bros. 2 - It was a ok game but nothing compared to the original. It's the odd one out in the Super Mario series.

Zelda 2 also isn't as good, same reason as Super Mario Bros. 2

Most disappointing to me would have to be Chrono Cross. I adore the original and I got so hyped up for the sequel, watching a video of the magnificent (mostly because of Scars of Time, probably the single best song in any video game) intro over and over. I pre-ordered it, picked it up the day it came out, and spent the next few days playing it pretty much non-stop. And even though I was trying to convince myself of its greatness through the whole game, the longer I played the more it dawned upon me that I was more and more forcing myself through it rather than legitimately enjoying it. In the end, it left a really sour taste in my mouth, and it put me off to the game as a whole for a few years. Which is a damn shame because when I separated them from my memories of actually playing the game, I truly love the aesthetics of the game. Between Yasunori Mitsuda and Nobuteru Yuuki, you couldn't have a better dream team in my book. So it's funny, I own more merchandise for Chrono Cross than many of my favorite games between the clock, guide book, art book, soundtrack, etc.

Speaking of convincing myself that I love game, Tetris 2 on SNES was one of my childhood games that I tried to blind myself as to how I really felt about it. I think it was the second or third SNES game I ever owned, so I didn't have much of any option but to play it a ton. For some reason a commercial on TV convinced me that I had to have it, so I actually paid the full MSRP, probably 70 bucks, on that stinker. These days I'm not even a huge fan of the original (blasphemy, I know), so Tetris 2 was an especially stupid purchase.

And even though I still love the game, I'm going to say Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria because it pales in comparison to the original. Something about the game just doesn't sit right with me. It's probably a combination of a lot of things - the washed out blue/grey/brown color palette of the game, the barely noticeable music, the happier atmosphere of towns, the overall unlikable main cast and story, the storyless einherjar, the lack of beautiful Kou and You Yoshinari portraits during dialogue, the completely changed ice crystals, the battle system that can't decide if it wants to be like Valkyrie Profile or Star Ocean 3, so on and so on. Still a well-crafted, fun game, but not exactly the sequel I was hoping for nor one of tri-Ace's best. Call me crazy, but I actually had a lot more fun with Radiata Stories, a tri-Ace game that practically everybody hates.

My picks go out to Castlevania 2 and Zelda 2. Just thought both were some of the worst games in their respective series.

I have to second Zelda II with everyone else. It lacked the simple gameplay of the original.

For some reason I like Jurassic Park games. The game I hate the most is Jurassic Park: The Chaos Continues, a completely different game than the first.

Super Mario Brothers 2 is my favorite Mario.

Previously I'd said GTA2 but now I'm going for Force Unleashed 2. FU- huh, apt acronym- FU1 promised a lot and delivered maybe half of what was promised. FU2 was supposed to be the all-singing, all-dancing sequel and what we got instead was frustration and a half-finished game.

newer of a game. but Raw 2 for xbox was a huge disapointment from the first one. i put many hours into the first one, only play 3 matches on the second, it simply sucks. @_@

I know I'm replying to a 9 year old post, but just had to because this is insane. Yes, Raw 2 was a huge disappointment, but still way better than the steaming turd that was the first Raw. That game was so bad I think they just shipped an alpha version. Raw 2 at least felt like a beta. At least Raw 2 had decent wrestler appearance edit mode ("threads" mode in recent WWE games like 2k14 sucks ass in comparison) and a comprehensive roster. If only they'd come up with a decent gameplay engine to match (though it still beats the pants off Raw 1's gameplay).

Dig Dug 2 (NES) - I rented it from Blockbuster when I was 11, played it again just a year or so ago, I remembered why it went back barely played when I was 11.

Truly, that last part made me LOL.

Zillion 2 comes to mind. I loved the first but this one always frustrated me.

I certainly wasn't a big fan of Zelda II. That side-scrolling play style really irritated me.
