View Full Version : Send a Member to CGE, 2004 Edition PREQUEL!

Last year, we hosted a very successful "pool" in which the first 50 members who paid the registration fee of $10 were given an equal chance for a trip to Vegas, plane and hotel fare covered, as well as $100 spending money (courtesy of CGE) and some extra stuff (courtesy of our own "Darth Vader").
You can see some of the details of that here.

We're ready to go again this year, so this message serves as both a "feeler" of sorts, and a request for your opinion.
So let us know:
1) If you're interested in joining the contest.
2) Your opinion on the attached poll. We can run MULTIPLE contests if the demand is there for it, but I'm wondering if it's better to do "singles" for $10 registration or "doubles" for $20. The way I see it, if you don't have a spouse or friend to bring along, you could always invite another member. We're buying TWO plane tickets and TWO hotel rooms, so it would work out either way - but the $20 registration may seem steep. What's your opinion?

I vote for single, because if you run more than one contest, that's more than one chance to win. With the doubles, it's only ONE chance to win, for twice as much!

I'll be in for a single.

I can see more people signing up for just $10. $20 starts to get expensive when theres a 1 in a hundred chance of winning :)

I'm tempted to pick option 2, but I know I'm more likely to sign up if the risk is less.

Quick question on the $20 option: You said we can invite another board member along. Does that other board member have to live nearby or can it be someone from across the country/world? I guess I mean if I win, can I, say, give the other half of the prize to POG or AdamG or Chadtower or Achika or whoever or does it have to be someone near me like Chunky or Butta?
Just wondering. :)

Aww, someone's thinking of me :)
I'd love to enter this, and I'd probably choose the $20 personally, although I doubt my work schedule will allow me to do so.

Good question.
It can be ANYONE, really. We'd be buying two separate tickets and two separate rooms so it doesn't matter who it is or how far away they are. In fact, this option came up last year for the very reason you state. Say you win... and you REALLY want to meet, say, Achika. Well, that would be a pretty sure-fire way of making that happen.

Hum....what I'd suggest doing, DP, is two have two topics running at the same time -- and for each one, the first 50 people to sign in and send $10 is entered in the contest. And allow someone to sign up in both AND send $20 if they want. That way, someone can buy one chance or two.

That's a good idea if we're doing "singles" but it really eliminates the "doubles" option. Chance of winning BOTH of them and being able to bring your significant other/best friend/fellow forum member is slim to none. It doubles your chances of winning but running two $10 contests back to back accomplishes that as well.

I don't know, though -- IS there a lot of intrest in the doubles option? I know if I won I'd go by myself, and I think many people would do the same thing.

I would enter doubles. Traveling alone is okay but always more fun with a friend. And think about all the crap you spend $20 on. A chance to go to CGE this year is worth it. I loved it my first time last year but looking to buy a house right now so I probably will not have the money to go this year.

I doesn't matter either way to me. It is a free trip to vegas after all. I would probably take a family member .
I seem to remember the prize of beef jerky and chips last year. Will that be up again this year??
Believe it or not, beef jerky is a big factor for some. That shit is damn expensive!! :D
Don't under estimate the power of jerky!! :rocker:

Strictly speaking, there's nothing wrong with that, but part of the appeal of the $20 entry fee was that if you won you could take somebody you know along. O_o

Nobody would appreciate going to cge quite like the board members here. I veto the idea of a significant other as I know mine would only bring the trip down. 2 days of video games.....I can hear it now, "Do we have to go there again today?" And she would walk home  Anyways, I guess we'll do what the concensus says or ultimately what Joe says :hail:

I have to say I like the $20 contest option. My husband does like games and if I won I would use the prize to pay for me and him. And he would appreciate it even though he's not a board member. But perhaps I'm in the minority. It certainly wouldn't be that I wouldn't want other members to go, but yeah I would love to go for less cost if it were my lucky day. The cost of two of us add up! :) I'd donate the other hotel room to someone else, though, since I obviously wouldn't need two of them!

I'm worried about something happening like nesuser2 said. The person who won, bringing someone along that didn't care about games. I'd feel like my $ went to waste, when there was a second member here that would have really liked to go.

I don't see what the big deal is..
flight from anywhere in the USA to Vegas is dirt cheap (since so many airlines fly it!) The hotel is the most expensive thing. So if you win, you already got the room.. pay for the spouce out of pocket for the flight..
simple, no?
I was wondering:
- Will you allow non americans to join? I mean, I live in Toronto, and have no problem flying out of Buffalo (if I win)
- Will you allow us to "ugrade" out of pocket to different hotel/room??

Well, I will do my best to answer the questions and cover details but I am by no means the final say or even much of a say at all. But this is what I see:
The expo is in San Jose, alot of people are getting this mixed up.
I would imagine non americans could find a way to worm their way into the mix. However, I think it's just best that we let Joe and whoever he picks if anybody to help him make some of these decisions do their best. If you get stuck in a room with roaches, atleast you got there for free but I don't see why any of the rooms would have any problems considering it's in San Jose. Vegas has some problems sometimes but that's usually all you ever hear of. I'm sure Joe will do his best to keep us in a nice affordable hotel room.
Anybody feel free to step in and knock me around if I messed up the details but most of them should be right. and the last part is just my best guess, and given that I know Joe doesn't have endless time to give to this contest...He would probably just pick the hotel that he sees best fit given his discretion but we'll let him decide that for himself. I'm not sure if the expo is held at a hotel but it sure seems like it would be and I would almost imagine that's where you would be destined should you win. Just my best guess....once again, my best guess.

Sorry, don't feel like editing. Anyways, just thought I would include that a nice hotel and a nice flight would cost $275 for the flight or so(Day, OH to Vegas, Flew it last year) and the hotel was $50 a night since we went with a group at a seminar and $50 was a good deal. So, that breaks it down about right. 50 members sign up $10 to get one person a flight, a room for 2 nights, and $100 spending cash. As well, anything anybody else donates. :D
EDIT: Ack, I will donate 2 packages of beefjerky overnighted to one of the winners houses the day before they leave if it helps any. I know many people that have moved from my area and the second they come back to town, they want to go get some of this jerky. It's strictly local as I'm sure was the case before, I used to deliver newspapers to the man behind the jerky. Also, winners can choose peppered or mild.....peppered is best :D

Last year, all forum members, located in and outside of the U.S., new and old, were invited to join in. Yes, $500 would probably cover the total costs of the trip for most people, but it's not a guarantee to cover the total costs of the trip for everyone, and any person going in to it should have that expectation, that they may have to make up the difference (A plane ticket costs PRETTY close to that for me if I fly out of the airport in my home state). And, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the cost of the hotel came out of the total winnings? You don't get the money AND a hotel room, right?
Mayhem
03-22-2004, 07:28 AM
If I remember, as I asked Joe about it, the hotel room and up to $300 of the air flight were covered by the prize last year. I guess it would be similar this year.

Personally, I would've given that other spot to a forum member, but I would like to have the option to select who.
I see the $20/doubles option is doing quite well...maybe we need to have another poll to see if that means there's two winners, or one winner who can select a friend.
punkoffgirl
03-22-2004, 02:06 PM
No, the $20 option is for the winner to bring whoever they want. Spouse, family member, OR if they so choose, they can pick another forum member.
If we wanted to make sure 2 separate forum members got it, then we'd run two $10 contests instead.
