Great article, Earl!! I like the idea of a Colorforms calendar mixed in with a retro touch (AFAIK, I haven't seen Colorforms here in like 20 years, but then again, I don't hang out at Toys r Us or local mom and pop educational toy stores.
So that's the trick to your marquee setup! Seems easy enough! Maybe one day, I'll follow in your steps... :)

Nice read, Earl.
I've been meaning to get some marquees for my setup. There are two problems, one is that I have no idea how to distinguish the real ones from the reproductions, and two is the shipping to Canada, which just about kills the deal with the prices.
Anyway, some day, I will get around to it, and I'll follow your recipe here if I can. And, I also like the colorforms idea.. have you ever checked Yahoo Japan auctions for colorforms? I wonder if you could find any there...

The reproduction marquees are a problem that just wasn't around when I was doing the bulk of my marquee-buying on eBay (circa 2000). Generally, look for anything in the listing about it being a "vinyl overlay" - often, the repro guys expect you to provide your own glass or plexiglas! Now, that could be cool if you want to get a bunch of these overlays and put them on one big framed piece of plexi and backlight that (something I've considered a few times, but don't have the wallspace for right now), but I just like having the real deal around. If I had more display space to work with, I might seriously consider the repro-overlays.
If anyone has any questions about a marquee auction on eBay, IM me the link and I'll take a look at it. I know that there are some who really chafe at the thought of a marquee going onto someone's wall instead of someone else's restoration cabinet project, but there are only so many restorationists out there, and there are too many original cabinets that have been stripped from their natural state. At that rate, preserving any of it for display seems like a good thing to me.
P.S. Glad everyone's digging the column. Let's see some photos if you do a similar marquee display, eh? ;)

Super-nice. I really need to spice up my pithy game room. Seriously, you know how drab my room is? It's not very big, and it's not very interesting... in fact, I'm now jealous of Earl's room. :(
But great work, my good man. :)

Earl, that was GREAT! I think I want to give the Colorforms calendar a try; watch the huge run on Colorforms on eBay now! Where'd you pick the calendar itself up at, btw?

Great job, Earl. The calendar was an genius idea, and I like the arcade marquee idea also. Can't wait for the next edition!

"Trading Spaces" pun and "Space Invaders" in the title = genius, pure genius :)
Well, I must say this looks interesting, though I decorate my room with system boxes on my shelf and the like instead of stickers, calendars and such ;)
Gotta go read it.

The Colorforms Calendar is actually a fairly recent product, so you might check Toys R Us or any smaller chains that specialize in educational or "smart" toys.
Oh, and you can thanks Mrs. PDF for the catchy column title. ;)

Fantastic article, Earl! Now I'm wondering how many marquees I can sneak into the apartment before Michael notices and asks how much I've spent... I'm looking forward to your next one- very inspiring stuff! Makes me wish I had a dedicated room again. :)

Great stuff Earl. As a fellow writer I know how tough it is to come up with an original idea each time. Good job -- I'm off to Radio Shack to pick up more rope lighting right now! :)
