so i picked up a sega master system today, it was in box with 2 controllers and the light phaser... but no AC. i thought i could use a model 1 genesis AC, so i tried that... but i got no power. can anyone confirm that this should in fact work? or is my sms DOA?

Yes a Genny 1 power adapter works for the SMS.
I'm going to say that it is DOA .
Sorry :o

NOT SO Fast!!!
At least 50% of the time Genny 1 AC's WILL NOT work with a SMS. The end of the AC that goes into the SMS is too long or too short (can't remember), and you get no power. Try a couple of different Gen 1 AC's, or you will have to find a dead or alive SMS AC. All you need from the SMS AC, is the end.
Your SMS may very well be fully functional. I've tested the above across more than 10 SMS's. Some like the Genny 1 tip, and some don't.

Hmmmm I've got 7 SMS sitting here and about 20 Genny 1 Power Adapters and they are all interchangeable. :hmm:
I 've never had one that doesn't work with a Genny 1 Adapter.

Heh, I'm screwing together an SMS as I read this... sorry I don't have an extra power supply (I'm one short myself) but I can tell you you can use pretty much any auto RF on it... or even better, one of those rca->coax dealies that doesn't introduce all the noise.

That's weird jonjandran, because I'm as sure as you are. LOL
Most of the ones I see were made for the Canuckian market, but some are US ones. perhaps some were made with slightly diff specs?
I used to assume that Genny 1 AC's always worked with SMS's, but after screwing over a trade partner with two good Genny 1 AC's to work with the SMS I traded him, I realized through home testing that a good genny 1 AC did not always work.
weird! @_@

well, i sure hope you're right omnedon, because this sms looks beautiful... almost as though it's never been touched. just wish it had come with it's hookups =(

Could it be that the SMS used more than one power receptacle in different motherboard revisions? Or perhaps some receptacles, those with more wear on them than others, are more sensitive to the slightly different tip size?
