Do your disc systems tend to break a lot?
What about your cartridge based systems?
None of my cartridge systems have ever broken. I don't abuse any of them, and many of them I did buy used, however, none have broken on me. I read about DOA units and some "dying" but I have never had anything burn out or break. Whether my VCS, my SNES, or Genesis....they all continue to function fine. It seems like these are indestructible.
Disc systems? I have had mixed results..

2600: Never seen a dead one.
NES: Seems like every used one I ever bought was a blinker.
Genesis: Seems like most of the used ones I've picked up needed cleaning to work properly. A little alcohol wipe on the carts and the cart slot seems to fix them right up.
SNES: Never seen a dead one.
N64: Never seen a dead one.
PSX: As long as it's not covered in dirt or been dropped, they usually seem to work.
Dreamcast: I've bought 4, 2 were broken. 50/50.
That's been my luck so far.

My luck on systems working...
Intellivision-Out of the 3 people I know that have/had an Intellivision, They have all broke accept for the one I own. :hmm:
NES-Mine blinks, all my friends NES systems blink or don't work at all...
SNES-Never seen a dead one.
Genesis-I have 4 and 3 are broke! 0.0 I take great care of my stuff, I guess the first owners didn't...
PSX-No real problems yet, My PSone from 2000 has been used by so many people/left on carpet/left on for over 9 hours/ect and it still works great. Also my PSX from launch day in 1995 will play any game (even beat up ones 90% of the time). The only PSX system I ever saw die was my friends (cause he took very bad care of it)
N64-The only N64 I have had die is my first one from 1997, and that was just because I was stupid in taking care of it.
Saturn-Never found a dead Saturn yet.
Dreamcast-Never found a dead DC either.
PS2-I know of tons of people in my area that had these things crap out. The only two people who have only had one PS2 the whole time is me and my uncle. lol
Xbox-Every Xbox I haeen worked fine.
Gamecube-These things are very durable, I've had mine since launch day and only got 2 disc errors.
Gameboy series-Never, these things are very strong.
Thats all the systems I have seen a lot of, so thats why I mentioned them all. Sorry if my post got a bit long winded.

I've had the NES blinking problem, but all I had to do was replace the 72-pin connector and it works fine.
SNES, big grey Game Boy from at least 7 years ago, Atari 2600 that was found in an old lady's closet after who knows how long, Genesis, DC, PS that got a little rock in it (long story), Saturn, and PS2 all work just fine.
Has anyone ever had a problem with the PS2 disc slot giving out? It makes scary noises whenever I open or close it, though it has yet to stop moving.

That's why I don't like front loading systems.
I've never had any problem with any of my systems, except for my 32X, but I was able to easily fix that.
I put a new 72 pin connector into my NES to fix the blinking, but it still blinks on some games. I've heard that some of the connectors floating around out there aren't very good, maybe that's why I still have some blinking. Anyone else have this problem?

My B&W Game Boy quit working recently after almost a decade.
My toaster NES also has the blinking problem, although it still works from time to time.

I've never had a system die on me yet (except for a PC). Not once. I've picked up used systems that didn't work when I got em....but that's about it.

Atari 2600, never had one fail out of 4 owned.
Intellivision, both the ones i've owned have had controller breakdowns. Be it the wiring, or just the lousy disc.
Nes, all blinkers out of 5 owned.
Genesis, never a broken anything out of 6 owned.
Snes, never a fail out of 3 owned.
TurboGrafx, 2 for 2, good as new.
3DO, good to go out of 2 owned.
Playstation, 2 in 3 have failed to live up to the test.
Saturn, 4 for 4, who could ask for anything more! Great durable system.
Philips CD-i, only 1 owned, still going strong.
Dreamcast, 3 owned, 3 dead, worst console I ever owned. If it wasn't able to read disks, the ports blew out.
PS2, 1 owned, it failed, and from my track record with sony, I said screw it and never bought, another.
Xbox, 1 owned, no probs, running like a champ.
Gamecube, 1 owned, no probs, running like a champ.
Gameboys, out of many original, special, color, pocket, and advanced versions, none have failed.
I may have forgotten a couple of systems. If so I will edit and add them later.

Only had a Coleco die on me, and I can bring Intys back to life.

one phrase, I hate front load systems,
2 goldstar 3DO's went out, bad drawers
1 frnt load Neo Geo, 2 months after purchase, haha still laughing after that one.
And, well, NES's just blink, I think that's part of their beauty.

NES that was used so much it needed a new connector, but thats no biggie.
My PS2 died (big surprise) and my 3DO died.
Other than that, systems have become broken but would still work (ie, the drive belt on my CDi broke, but I could still open it manually and play games)

The only console of mine that has ever broken was a ColecoVision... and that was sort of my fault anyways (I was using it with an auto RF switch, and it wasn't work. At the time, I didn't realize that CV's only work with manual RF switches, so I opened up the system and started monkeying around trying to "fix" it, and I ended up breaking it for real). I also found another broken CV at a thrift store once.
I'm into most modern systems, so the only CD based systems I have are the Dreamcast, Gamecube, and JagCD... haven't had any trouble with any of them.

other than having 2 original playstations crap out due to old lasers, the only system to give me trouble so far is one of my used SNESes, its currently clinging on to dear life and only plays certain games

colecovisions- although these could probably be fixed
7800- god only knows why. prob electric
dinavision- obscure colecovision clone, lousy construction
astrocade- awful power set up
virtual boy- word to the wise: way too fragile to live on the stand
PSone- seems like a crappy build
sega CDs- who knows
jaguar- one fried itself, and yes it was with a jaguar power supply

I've had at least one of each of the 5 Atari systems (2600, 5200, 7800, Jag and Lynx) and only the Jag had to be repaired. I got it fixed and later bought another one when they were really cheap. Haven't had any other trouble with the Ataris.
Have never had any trouble with any of the Nintendo systems and I've had them all except for the Virtual Boy and post Game Boy Color GB's. I'm especially impressed with the SNES since I used to have it on the floor in my last residence and I was always accidentally kicking it. I should get another for insurance, though.
No problems with 3DO, TG-16, ColecoVision, PS2 (don't still own all those).
My original PlayStation (which I got a few months after Launch Day) lasted just about 5 years at which point it began skipping like crazy and was unplayable. I then bought another (slightly different innards, I hear, but the same outer design) and have had no further problems.

NES - mine blinks, but if you clean new games and try again it works fine.
SNES - My older one still works, same with the SNES2 i've got. I've never had any problems with the second one, but a few with the first in the past.
N64 - Fine, but isn't doing so well with my memory cards.
Gamecube - no problems.
Genesis - I've had to clean some games, no other problems.
Saturn - No problems.
Dreamcast - load up problems here and there (it'll take me to the main screen even if i have a disc)
PS1 - Broke after I left it sideways for too long. I've been apathetic about fixing it. x_x
PS2 - fine
Game boy - mine's been through LOTS of shit, you'd have to see it to believe it, it's litterally deteriorating. There are some busts on the screen and the sound crackles, but it surprisingly still plays.
Game boy pocket - These little fuckers ate up batteries. oh, nothing wrong with mine, i just remember why i hated them so.
GBC - still works, i actually tried mine out last night (even had the Magi Nation game in it I last played years ago)
GBA - nothing
GBASP - nothing

out of the systems I have now my XBOX gets played constantly between me and my girlfriend it has the samsung drive so far so good
also have:
Dreamcast-works good and has been played for many years it has been through friends and family and then back to me it makes a lot of loading noise so I think maybe the lens rails maybe getting a little wore like the old PSX systems use to do but I have never seen a "dead" one solid systems IMOA
Gamecube:family system and a tough one at that its been dropped used as a makeshift toaster O_O by my 2-year old etc and I always clean it up and it works fine
Ive owned to many systems to list but the worst ones performance wise that I ever owned were were: PSone luanch systems and an old Sega Nomad that lasted ONE DAY! thats right ONE DAY! I have no idea what happened to it either lol

NES: I've had it even before birth, and it still plays games. Though, I do have to blow on some cartridges, and maybe even utilize alcohol to make them work, but what counts is that the system can play them.
SNES: It still works great, but I think one of my audio jacks are bent... the sound is a bit muffled at times. It's like having 1 1/2 speakers. :o
Genesis: About a fourth of the time I insert a cartridge, it doesn't work. I blow/clean it, then it works. My Genny basically works fine.
Playstation: The Playstation I used to have had a fubar video jack. The new one works like a charm.
N64: Also works great, no probs here.
All Game Boys: No probs, until I run out of batteries. :)
Dreamcast: Probably my least functional of my systems, about a third of the time I try to play, it just takes me to the menu screen, and I have to open and close the lid to try again. One time, it just simply wouldn't play Sonic Adventure. Not sure if the problem's with the discs or the system...
PS2: About a year and a half after owning my original PS2, it gave me a ghey disc read error message. I took it in for repairs, and they gave me another one for free. This one works fine now.
Gamecube: Works great, though my GC adapter was taken out of commision in a lightning storm. My stupid surge protector didn't work, but it was easy to replace it.
XBOX: My original XBOX was fried in the same storm that took my GC adaptor. The hard drive was wrecked, and I had about 40+ soundtracks copied onto it... I have another one now with about... three soundtracks. Dang.
Game Gear: Sold it.

I don't collect disc system games. Anything with as many moving parts as a PSX is going to be dead when you are 50 and you will be constantly looking for old tech and someone who knows how to replace a laser.
Your 2600 will still be working when you are 60.. your Sega Saturn will not.

The only system that ahs kicked the can on me is the PS1 and the PS2 gives me problems occassionally. On the other hand, my PC Engine Duo R still chugs along.

The only thing I killed other than a NES thrown out of the window die on me was a 32X. I now own over 40 different sytsems, so here is the VERY general rule.
Cart based systems..........durable, carts generally need cleaning, get a top loader nes
disc based systems...........always use clean discs that are not damaged. Dont run overnight, keep the power off when not using, KEEP OFF THE CARPET
keep systems away from the carpet in a dust free place. If anything vaccum your sysytems you use now and then(I have an original PS2 day one, that is my secret)

NES - The NES I had as a kid started blinking more than working around the mid 90's. It probably just needed a new 72 pin connector, but my parents figured since I had an SNES and my brother had a Genesis that nobody was playing the NES, so it was sold at a garage sale. One of my friends claimed to have an NES that caught on fire about 10 years ago. One of my friends still has an NES that he plays to this day, he says it takes a few minutes to get a game to work, but other than that no problems. I don't know if he cleans it at all or what. I have another friend who has three working NES consoles. He's been collecting consoles and games for awhile and I'm trying to get him to sign up for the boards, but that's another story.
Genesis - My brother had a Genesis 2, and it was working pretty well when he sold it after buying an N64.
Super NES - I still have the same SNES I had when I was a kid. It takes a couple tries to get some games to start, but it works great. And it hasn't yellowed! :D
N64 - My brother still has his and it still works pretty well.
PSX - My brother got this from my cousin, and it only seems to work when it wants to.
PS2 - From what I've heard, I feel pretty lucky, and very happy, that my PS2 has worked since the day I got it back in 2002. I've gotten a few DRE's, but for the most part, it's been pretty reliable.
XBOX - My brother bought a refurbished XBOX, which has given quite a few DRE's depending on how long you play it. (On average, it tends to happen if you keep it on longer than 2-3 hours...hmm...)
Gamecube - Just bought a used one last month. It works great.

I've had one C64 die on me, though over the years it did get soaked in a vase of water, heat damage, a couple of chips blew and rewired where a small part of the circuit tracing had been damaged. Took a lot before it croaked. Apart from that, nothing else I've had (SNES, N64, Cube, Gameboys, Vectrex, 2600, 7800, NGPC etc) has exhibited any problems.
