Does anyone find the Sphere System of FF X confusing or ticks them off?

Nope. I like being able to control how characters evolve and using it to adjust difficulty. Example: In one game I made Rikku into a Yuna clone and Kimahri into a Tidus clone. Next game, I made both Rikku and Kimahri into black mages like Lulu.
In my third game I avoided using the Sphere Grid to make the battles harder.

How you do all that? Me, I prefer traditional leveling-up compared to the hellish Sphere System.
Right now at the Mi'ihen Highroad, trying to gain Sphere Points so I can attempt to fill up my players Spheres before I get the level 1 lock.

Each character has a fixed path through the spheres. There are some detours but essentially its just a one-way path. The characters are pre-destined to grow the same way every time.
BUT by using Level 3/4 locks, you can re-direct your characters onto alternate paths. For example, I used a Level 3 lock to take Rikku off her path, and re-direct her onto Yuna's path. So, Rikku became a clone of Yuna. I did the same thing to re-direct Kimahri onto Lulu's path and make him a black mage.
I wouldn't waste a lot of time trying to collect sphere points. The game is so ridiculously easy that you should be able to play straight through without hassle.
The Sphere Grid doesn't make sense the first time through, but it really improves the replayability the second and third times. Like I said, I used the Grid to keep my characters weak... thereby making the fights harder. And tailored the characters to my wishes with the powers I wanted them to have. You can't do that with the previous Final Fantasies' automatic level-ups.
SUGGESTION: Take each character one-by-one and follow their path, making a list of all their abilities (Fire, Fira, Firaga, Ultimate, etc). That way you'll have a better understanding of how the grid works. You'll see that each character is distinct from the others.
Instead of a sphere grid, I think Square should just create a linear up-down path for each character... with occasional detours. It would be a lot less confusing for newbies.
