Ok I have the chance to buy a sega saturn in the box (excellent condition) and it comes with Virtua Fighter....along with a boxed saturn light gun that is mint in the box with virtua cop....all of this forr 53 dollars (that is with tax)..

My second question is, it is in a long box with a "VIRTUA FIGHTER INCLUDED" sticker on it, where as my friend has it in a square box...which one is version 1 saturn and which is version 2? and which is rare/better?

Thanks
Doc

Personally, I paid considerably less, I paid $25.00 a saturn, W/ 2 controllers, all hookups, and an St-Key but no games, and I got my fighting vipers for $2.00, and my Virtua Cop W/ Gun for $10.00

I watched an auction for a boxed saturn and it went for $92 with no games. If you are really into collecting then I'd say buy it.

This is exactly what a "Non gamer" would do.

You should ALREADY have a saturn, ALREADY know what the difference between the two are, And not care if its rare or not.

I have a saturn some games and a tap.
Playing Saturn bomberman with some buddies is worth a million.

Thats not a horrible deal for someone who likes Saturn games. Personally I think the Saturn is a piece of shit, both in it's shoddy construction, and it's overall crummy library of games to choose from. Thank god Sega doesn't make consoles anymore.

LOL anyways. Id say go for it, saturn is my fav console of all time, and apparently gunstarhero slept during saturns life span, anyone who owned it usually loves it, like everything else sega has put out. Saturn is a great investment, has some CLASSIC rpg's , action games and puzzle games. If your into importing games, you will love it even more :P

Obviously friends hu6800 woke up on the wrong side of his boyfriend this morning...I simply asked a question my friend...I do not usually focus on sega items or saturn for that matter...I am primarily a NES,SNES, and Tg16 guy....So if further remarks would like to be made...just take the question for what it is worth and don't be "bitch" about it...These forums are set up for questions and answers...not elitest such as yourself, cause I am sure you know all of every system ever made and I am proud of you(though I respect some people's great knowledge...you know who you are)...but in the future refrain from such ignorant and one sided responses....I am not in this for the money but the love of the game...but if I do wish to know its rarity of an item, I will damn well ask...hence why there are rarity lists...

Thanks to all who made a valuable contribution to this question,
Doc x_x

i recently acquired a brand new in box saturn, but even before i got it, i started having 2nd thoughts about devoting my limited time to this system. can anyone give me 5 good reasons to keep it? otherwise, im selling it on ebay.

Here are five reasons :)
Guardian Heroes
Panzer Dragoon Zwei
Nights
Burning Rangers
Nightwarriors (go for Vampire Savior if you don't mind importing)

But really, it's an early 3D system like the PSOne (but not as early as 3DO, Jaguar). It will on average be lower poly count that Playstation and have no 3D transparencies, but the annoying polygon breaks of PSOne games is no where to be seen. Plus there are a good batch of exclusive titles...

Up to you,
Ben

With the Light Gun that's not a bargain, but not a bad price. One or two controllers? I figure no shipping helps too...

I would have purchased it because I DO want the system despite not being able to find any games or even the system anywhere :lol

I can play SMS/GEN/GG/DC games but SAT...no. :(

Great system. It has many good games that you can only play in a Saturn. But keep away from the PS1 ports, please. They were bad in their system of origin and a half-hearted translation didn't make them any good. x_x

First of all, Saturn rocks, don't pay attention to what anyone else says. I have 5 of em. :D

Anyways, the price isn't BAD, nor is it GOOD. It's a decent price, and getting it on eBay after shipping would run you more. But also after some searching you may and probably will find it for less. Probably not boxed, and maybe without the cords, and maybe even months down the line.

The thing here is, 1. how much do you want it? and 2. can you spare 50.00. If your answers are "a lot!" and "yes" go ahead and get it...it's all about the happiness! You only live once. :)

my advice is Skip the Saturn and get a Dreamcast instead.

Saturn has some decent games - I went through my 2 month Saturn-revival obsession aa few months back and picked up the following games: Rockman 8, Bio Hazard, Puzzle Bobble 3, Guadian Heroes, Radiant Silvergun, Wipeout, Nights & Sonic Jam. Saturn is a decent system - but getting good copies of the good games is going to COST YOU.

On the other hand there is the dreamcast - still readily available in used condition at most EBs for cheap, but starting to get hard to find). Dreamcast has a MUCH bigger and better library of games. Dreamcast games are much easier to "aquire" (free of charge) than Saturn games.

I would jump to dreamcast instead - Saturn is neat, but by no means Super Duper Serious Awesomeness (like the aquabats!)

Jive3D has a good point.
The Saturn (IMHO) has a higher number of shit hot games than the DC (if you import) but they get costly. While there are a stack of games you can buy for $5-$10 (even on Ebay) the stack for $25-$75 games is much, much bigger (and better).

Well, as much as I see your point Gajin, there are loads of great games for the Saturn that can be had cheap... even import ones.

For example - Bubble Bobble / Rainbow Islands. The Saturn is one of the few systems you can get this game without dropping a small fortune. And man, I am soooo addicted to Rainbow Islands!

Or, on the import front, Vatlva - fantastic multiplayer driving battle action :) And easy to pick up for less than $10. Puyo Puyo Sun or Puzzle Bobble 2X are both excellent cheap pick-ups. And for a little more you can have some absolutely storming games like X-Men vs. Streetfighter without worrying about breaking the bank.

Back to domestic games again Virtua Cop 1 & 2 and House of the Dead are great games that can be had pretty cheap. The original Panzer Dragoon is a classic. And I'm just starting here ... I'm sure others can carry on with many more!

And if you happen to find yourself with a bit of cash to spare, there's a whole world of fantastic, if slightly more pricey, games to fill up with as well. Or you can just do as I do .. buy the stuff in from Japan on credit, sell half off and make all your money back. Keep the other half to play on! :)

For starters...

-NiGHTS
-Christmas Nights
-Street Fighter Alpha
-Street Fighter Alpha 2
-Bug!
-Wipeout
-Tomb Raider
-Bug Too!
-Panzer Dragoon
-Panzer Dragoon 2:Zwei

Just to name a few.

Crummy library? You obviously haven't seen all the imports out for it (and you don't even need to open up the system to play them). :D

Yes, I agree -- even said it my post. It's like going to the "good" supermarket though. You can buy the cheap stuff, but it's right next to the high-quality expensive stuff. Very tempting to get the expensive stuff, no?

About 6 months ago, I purchased a Sega Saturn and about 40 games from an old friend of mine for $150. He really needed the money and I was really interested in playing a ton of games that I had heard so much about. I got NIGHTS and PANZER DRAGOON SAGA and loads of other really rare "Awesome" games. One Saturday I decided to sit down and try each game that I had not tried before. I had played PDS for a little while but never got into it. During this day I went upstairs to make lemonade. As I was stiring the lemonade I would stir real fast and then let the spoon go and watch it go around and around. And then it hit me. Stiring lemonade was more fun to me then playing Sega Saturn. I wound up selling the lot on ebay for $500 so I was happy, but only happy knowing the system was out of my house. I know there are a ton of rabid fans out there, but IMHO the saturn is about on par with the channel F or giving your mom $3 to kick you in the junk. If a Saturn is necessary get virtual cop. Most fun I had with what I feel is the worst system ever created. Just my opinion.

Wow, some strong words from some of you.

Who doesn't like Van Damme?

Sure he was dumb enough to turn himself into a b-movie star, but his earlier movies kicked ass. Bloodsport, that movie kicked so much ass that it brought a tear to me eye when he did his special split jumping spin kick to win the kumite.

2nd off, I own around 40-60 original Saturn games, and I must say, it is well worth it. Sure some games suck balls bigtime, but I bet I could name off literally hundreds of ps1 games that do as well. Sure the 3d graphics suck, but the system was meant to play 2d games. 2d fighters look so much better on a saturn than a ps1. the big problem with saturn has already been stated, many of the really good games are expensive (marvel vs street fighter comes to mind, I paid around 50 for mine, but that was when the system was already out of production).

Now judging by my sig, you can tell than I own and enjoy my saturn. There are many hidden gems that I up and find just because I got them for cheap. I got a game called Loaded that is fun as hell. Top down view of you picking some crazy guy and all you do is kill stuff and find keys. It was released along side of the ps1 version, but I don't like the ps1 as much (this is my opinion).

As for a boxed saturn, they are very hard to come by for a descent price. i actually had to rebuy a box for mine. i actually got a saturn when they came out and had the 3 free games deal. they do bust easily, so if you get 1 boxed one, i would highly suggest you get another one from ebay. the saturn i am on is actually my 3rd or 4th, because the cd-roms kept going out on me.

i still stand by saturn, i still have mine sitting right next to all of my other consoles. just remember, i got mine for 200 when it came out, and it was boxed, so is 50 really all that bad of a deal?

The Sega Saturn. Never played it when it came out but snagged one at a Blockbuster "we bought out a competitor" sale. What's interesting is that my desire to collect took over my rational thought: I told my wife that I was going to BB to get Yoshi's Story and instead got the Saturn. Big mistake as she saw the copy there and gave me hell on the spot. I sheepishly bought her Bust a Move 2 Arcade Edition for the Saturn and the rest is history. She LOVES that game.

It's an odd thorn in my side, something I shouldn't have bought yet I own. Every time I try to sell the sucker something comes along that makes me keep it. From a Virtua Cop blastathon to playing against my wife in THE best version of Bust a Move 2 available. I'm not gonna say it's the gaming experience of a life time but it has enough good titles to warrant being in a collection at least for those titles alone.

atari overlord, that's funny as hell!
and true from what I have heard about the saturn, besides panzer dragoon saga, all the other good games such as wipeout, tomb raider, street fighter alpha, and more were all released on the PSX, so I guess I just don't really see the appeal either.

Well, i got a Saturn late last year and i am overjoyed to own it. (and my budding import collection).

But there is one simple rule to follow when it comes to any game system out there: Only buy it if there are games you want to own on it.

I questioned why i owned a Dreamcast for damn near a year before i found the game that made me go "Yeah, this is why i own the system!". The Saturn had games on it i wanted before i even got it.

To each his own.

Exactly. Most old systems are damn cheap now and all of them have exclusive games that are worth playing. So there are no reason to not have them all.
And about the games: Quality over quantity. Always.

It is true that I dont know much about imports for any system. Every game ever made for the saturn over seas could be just the best. But IMHO the ones you can find easily over here where I live blow. I try to avoid buying my entire collection off of the internet so I have never gotten into the imports. I am very scared to buy a PC Engine just because I might like it and I just dont know if I can spend that much more money on games.
