The release date for FFXI and the HDD for PS2 is quickly approaching. Who's getting one?
I had a chance to take part in the beta test for this game so Sony is sending it to me free of charge. Pretty good deal if you ask me. :)

I just posted a similiar thread.
Is this game online only with a monthly fee?
The monthly fee thing just kills me. I find it very hard to commit to that arrangement. Maybe I am just too cheap.
Paying 99.00 for the game and HDDrive and than commiting what about 10.00 a month to play?
I am on the fence with it.
Plus i am enjoying Champoins of Norrath online free with voicechat

The game is online only (30 day free trial I believe), and I believe the monthly fee is around $13.95, however I'm not sure of the exact amount.
I'm going to play the hell out of it for the first month and then decide if I want to pay to keep playing it.

13.95 a month???
For that amount I can switch to DigitalCable and get about 100 new TV channels.
I think I am going to pass.

It does support dial-up, however I don't know how well it works since I'm fortunate enough to have DSL.

I know I sure am. I love final fantasy, and I know this will ROCK. I don't get much cash, so if I like it, i'll save up every month to pay the fee. Another good reason is for SOCOM maps with the HDD, not to mention the other goodies.

Yup, I'll be picking it up wednesday and playing it for the rest of the week, only breaking to shower and possibly sleep. I've got a slow week of classes that I'm not required to show up for this week, so timing is perfect.
I have no problem paying to play. Since I don't play MMORPG's religiously (read: at all) I don't have any other fees or major games sucking up my time. I cancelled my PSO sub awhile back, so I've got the monthly $ to pay for this.
Now the only question is, Elvan, taru taru, or mithra?

I pre-ordered it. Not sure how much game time I'll get in but somewhere along the way I plan to devote a few nights to it. I've seen the PC version and a few buddies have been playing it there. According to them, teamwork is VERY important. Not in the way it usually is, with getting through battles, but for actually advancing levels in the game. Some kind of "normalizer" on the experient point system.
I'm looking forward to checking this one out.

Nope. Not getting it. Being the lone wolf I am, I'm not into MMORPG one bit (the only type of online gaming that interests me is of the private salon with friends type). Besides, if FF XI had even a minor solo player mode (à la PSO), I might consider it, but not when it's 100% online and fee-based. Lookit this way: 10 years from now, I'll still be able to play my offline games, from Pitfall and Solaris on the Atari 2600 to Ikaruga and Wind Waker on the GameCube. But what's to say that FF XI will still be playable online?
Anyway, I'm sure it's enjoyable. It's just not really my cup o' tea. I'll go back to my regular RPGs... Just going through the Baldur's Gate series on my puter will take me enough time anyway...

Im still trying to decide if im going to the FF XI Launch Party in SF tonight at the Meteron. They will be selling them, but at 12:01, meaning that i'll miss the last BART train out for the night, meaningin that ill have to drive and find a parking lot that stays open that late if i am to go. I will get it, that there is no question about. It just might involve me going to CC or something instead if I dont hit up the launch party tonight, knowing that they will have copies when the other game stores wont.

I dont think that if you get one, that it will work. I think its command coded for the one user (like all online games are nowadays, to prove that its legit) and once the code is activated, you cant reuse it. One would think that when the person sells off the HDD that they would cancel their account so they dont get hit for 12.95 a month, locking down the game. Its like buying PSO or PSO2 for the DC, you couldnt use them online if they had been activated before

Nope
1) I only have a 56K and
2) I don't like the concept of the monthly fees. What? I just paid $50 for a game and now I have to pay $14 a month to actually play it? That just doesn't seem right to me.

I DO plan to get the HDD till the end of the year, mostly because Socom 2, Syphon Filter: Omega Strain, Gran Turismo 4, Killzone and Metal Gear Solid 3.
If Sony does not release the HDD by itself, i'll have to buy this bundle with FFXI. Will play it for the one free month, then it will be kept in the box for the rest of it's life :hmm:

Pass. I like FF the series and all, but if I was going to play this, it would have been on the PC. Anyway, I've been almost completely soured to MMORPGs after Star Wars Galaxies, and from what I'm heard, FFXI is even more of straight level grind than SWG. That's kind of frightening. @_@
I'll get the HD standalone whenever they decide to release it that way.

I was reading the May issue of EGM last night and supposedly the HDD will not be released by itself until other titles that require it are released.
I played the demo of Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain and it was lots of fun. I look forward to it.

I work at a best buy and we are getting FFXI this thursday, alot of people have been asking about it. One of my roommates is real big into Everquest so he digs those online team work games so he's picking it up. Plus, another interesting thing I saw, this months copy of EGM has pics of FFXII. I thought that was cool. Personally, I'm still holding my breath for Ninja Gaiden & Doom 3 for the Xbox.

Vaporware = no sale in my dept.
I don't play RPG's myself (I like twitchy eye-hand coordination games), so I wouldn't buy it anyway.
But for god's sake, haven't we learned not to believe console companies will come out with there latest and greatest add-ons? The HDD doesn't exist. The HDD will exist when we see it on a store shelf. I will never, ever, ever purchase a game thinking that the vaporware that is coming out will add value to the game. So Sony is going to 32x the gaming public with a HDD at the same time that they, Microsoft, and Nintendo are spending big R&D money on their next consoles?
I'm sure someone here is still waiting on that package from Mattel for an INTV add-on or two.:D

I forgot the math:
13.95 x 12 months=167.40
FFXI+HDD =99.00
Price of FFXI for one year=266.40
Hmmm....
Online games are cool but this is a gamble, even if you like rpg's.
If you buy and love the game, see above for pricing.
If you buy and hate the game, well, that's even a bigger waste of money.
But I guess this is the future of gaming if they want to combat piracy.

Yes, I hear that the HDD is being bundled with FFXI currently and the HDD will come out on its own later this year. I call this vaporware. As in the HDD is not being sold until later this year. Unless, of course you wish to purchase a $100 bundle and be part of a test market. Once Sony gets out the bugs (you don't think that it will all go without a hitch do you? That would certainly be a rarity in the gaming industry), there will be a dearth of games that can be played using it.
So, The HDD is coming out for real later this year.
VAPORWARE
So by the time The HDD gets up and running they are going to be closer to the new generation on consoles (again-32x)
I'm not saying it isn't coming out. I am quite sure that it is. But gaming companies all promise more than they deliver. My personal policy is to never trust them to get the products to us as they claim. I don't think they are lying to us, I just think that release statements are for the shareholders to get warmfuzzies over, not us. We know the history of the gaming industry, shareholders know what is a good P/E ratio for a given industry.
All I am saying is that Sony is promising an add-on later this year. And later this year they will be closer and closer to the next gen consoles (32x...again)
And just out of curiosity, when the PS2 was released they were talking about this HDD. I would like to know what the projected release date was back then...3 or so years ago.

am I a fan of FF, hell ya. will I buy FFXI, hell NO.
First off, I really hate online games. 2nd, no way am I going to pay a monthly charge after dropping a 100 bucks for a game.
Instead I just picked up the PS2 Linux kit for 100 bucks. Which gets me the same HD, the broadband adaptor, keyboard, mouse, vga adaptor. NOW THATS A DEAL.

Well, I bought it, but I'm pissed that I didn't get to play it at no fault of my own.
There was about a 2 hour download on T1 for the viewer update (well, two and a half if you consider the first half hour wasted after a time out and all current progress lost)
Then there's the actual FFXI update....who knows how long that will take, since it timed out. And no telling how many more there will be....maybe by sunday I'll be able to play... :grumble:

PS2 version. It may be my connection (the one at the school is kinda crappy...but it's been going good lately, so I think it has something to do with the servers?)
You better hope and pray by some stroke of luck handed down from the VG Goddess that we get put on the same server. From what I understand, the servers are completely random and you can't pick and choose like in PSO.
If anyone has played the PS2 & the PC version, was all this confusing PlayOnline crap in the PC version? It seems like a lot of extra steps, when I just want to get on and play the fucking game. Even though I didn't care for EverCrack, it was WAY easier to jump in and play....

Ok ,well guess I might get a new one just to have a sealed copy.I dont really care for the mmorpg type of game so I wont be buying to play.
I remember that with pso for the dc .Most used game stores would never take pso on dc in on trade .

I agree that the entire PlayOnline registration/update process is long and confusing. It took me nearly 3 hours to setup the HDD, download tons of updates, and ultimately sign my life away to PlayOnline. :)
When I finally did get to play FFXI, I felt much better....it's a great game. I plan on playing it quite a bit this weekend.
Bottom line:
FFXI rocks, but the PlayOnline software SUCKS!!

But getting a strait answer out of her at the moment is hard, cause now she is saying that i dont owe her anything, but when we talked on the phone about it yesterday, i coulda sworn i heard 61.

Yah its kinda like that, but weve known each other for like 8+ years... Were just friends now, though back in the day (highschool) i had a thing for her, and awhile ago she had a thing for me (ok she still does to a small degree) but its one of those aknowledged friends things. I see her as a very close friend, and not that type of material anymore.
She now wont tell me the price, and says that its a present, to repay her for all the weird Cure stuff that i find for her.

I caved and bought the damn thing. Mainly for the HDD, since I played FFXI on the PC back in November.
I dunno, I might try it out since it's on a console, which I am better suited for. I just can't get into anything other than FPS or Sim City-type games on a PC. *shrug*
But the fact that you can back up your mem cards to the HDD = :rocker: Time to sell my 3 extra cards!

That installation process was MADNESS.
30 minutes to register your PlayOnline, your FF XI, and the expansion for FF XI.
THEN, 40 minutes to install the game to the hard drive.
THEN! an hour and a half to update the files. There were over 1300 files that needed to be updated! What the F?!
Anyway, I'm finally online. I got just far enough to where I could see my character in the game, then shut it down.
I'm "digitalpress" in the game - what's everyone else using as a handle?

I am sure you all will enjoy your time playing FFXI, but with 2 small children , I just don't have the time to commit and it would be a waste of money.

Kinda to bump this post back towards the top... but at the same time, a question for those that have gotten into the game.
Did you have issues trying to load the PlayOnline stuff???? I got through Step 2 pretty quick (I only had to try 2 or 3 times before it loaded) But i cant for the life of me get Step 3 to go. Ive spend over an hour today trying to get it to update or do whatever the hell it's suppose to do during that 3rd step. Ive even tried different times of day to see if that would help. Morning? DENIED. Afternoon? DENIED. Night? DENIED. Its not working.
I am so sick of that Fusion Jazz that is playing during the load screens, and if i hear any more morse code mixed in with it, as it tried to connect only to deny me. there will be a postal PapaStu hurdling his PS2 out the window to its death in the street.
GAH!!!! DAMN SQUARE!!!
