It seems like you have vertical shmups where the ship goes up and up and up and up (Xevious), and horizontal shmups where the ship goes right and right and right (Gradius). Then there are a couple of free roamers (half of Thunderforce 2).
Does anybody know of shmups where you vertically scroll and the ship always points downward? Or horizontal scrollers where the ship always points to the left? Other than a couple of segments in Vanguard (pointing down--I think in the Rainbow Zone?), I can't think of any.

Sky Kid's sort of a shmup, and it scrolls to the left.

You've also got a few scenes in Philosoma for the Playstation where your direction/perspective changes.
The scene where your ship is in the background firing toward you is maddening!
Abadox for the NES scrolls downward (!). It also has side-scrolling levels. Not the best game, especially considering it was developed by Natsume. Still, I'd like to try it again after all these years.

Hmmm....thats a hard one.
Yup, I remember Philosoma for PSX....I had high hopes for this one, but tired of it quickly...it was ok, though.
Only one I can think of is Thunderforce 2....well kinda...odd stages you could point down, well left too for that matter....oh yeah...in one the later stages of TF3 you actually back up (Right to left)...well for a second anyway.
Hey...in Sidearms for TG16....don't you change directions a couple times? Also, in R-Type Delta second stage (underwater) you change direction, go down....and level 4 same game you fly upward, right?
Gotta blow the dust offa R-Type Delta and play it again!

Lords of Thunder for PCE/Sega CD had a level that scrolled left, though I don't think the ship faced that way.
