She arrived today, after a quick trip from the midwest and several years of my searching. Sega DS-16 Demo System. I am very pleased...

Bastard!!! :P
I saw one at a local game store (in a pile of stuff they haven't gone through yet) 2 years ago, but they said that it wasn't for sale. Those bastards.

Two questions.
Does it work?
How does it work (power source, switching games, what is that plug coming out of the top)?

Wow what a find! I assume these were used to display multiple games running in a sort of loop or could you actually choose and play each game jukebox style?

Yes.

It's attached through both the expansion on the bottom of the standard Genesis part (a la Sega CD) and the cartridge with the ribbon cable. The only power is the standard adapter plugged into the Genny. The white plug is used to plug into a button independent from the unit that allows you to cycle through the games. While I don't have the button in there, I can simply use a wire to make the momentary connection that changes to the next cart. Eventually, I will get an appropriately sized switch to plug into it. The lights next to the slots indicate which slot is being accessed at the moment.

Hey, do me a favor, and once you get the button to work, update this topic or start a new one to let us know. And by us, I mean me.

Here comes another picture of the unit packed with games and running. You can see the selection LED next to Sonic 1 is on, as well as the little green wire I use to trigger the game selection. In answer to wisekrak's question, it plays jukebox style - after 20 minutes on one cart, I experienced no automatic cycling...

That's a killer find! I remember the Dentist's office had one of those Genesis setups when I was younger. I used to play X-Men and Cyborg Justice while waiting to have my mouth excavated.

The REAL burning question is why do you have two Sonic 2s in there? I can see that the top labels vary (which I never knew) but is there some difference in the soft that I was never made aware of? Perhaps I am looking too deep into this mystery.

The Sonic 2 in slot 3 is the Euro MegaDrive verison of the game. It's exactly the same game-play wise. The only reason you see it in there is because I grabbed a handful of games to stuff the unit with and it was right next to the regular Sonic 2. :)

Can't say that I did. There have been two up on eBay in the past 2 weeks, the second cloning the first almost entirely... Went for $91, $105. $100 sounds juts right for one of these units.

It would be cool to have one huge on of those with like 25 game slots, so you can have only the games you play then labels next to them or something and just hit the switch for the game you would want to play.

I remember a company had advertised a device that held like 18 games and was selectable....it was called "Video Jukebox".
The company name escapes me at the moment but a previous search on the net didnt give me any worthwhile info on its (possible) release.
