I'll admit it. I'm an Atari noob. It was in fact this board that introduced me to pre-NES games. Recently, I picked up Yar's Revenge. I have absolutely no clue what I'm doing. Is that flickering vertical rainbowy strip in the middle of the screen supposed to be there? Is it supposed to be making weird noises? What the heck am I supposed to be doing? Even after breaking all the blocks around it, I can't seem to hurt the ship that's shooting at me.

Please help this poor newbie. :)

To sum it all up:
Rainbow strip is a safe zone from the missile (horizontal line) on the screen.
you need to get power for the "zorlon cannon"(block on the left side) by eatin the shield on the right side.
Fire the zorlon cannon, blow up the flashing dude (qotile), and win the level. Make sure you've cleared a path to the qotile though.

You should look into the Game Boy Color Yars Revenge remake, it's alot of fun, and has some interesting twists later on that weren't in the 2600 one that I'm aware of.

You want to eat the shield (by holding against it) rather than shoot it. Once the zorlon cannon appears on the left hand side, you can fire it with the button and try to hit the Qotile. Careful though, because the zorlon cannon can kill you too.

The not-so-secret trick to getting high scores in this game is to make sure that you fire the zorlon cannon so that you blast the Qotile while it's in flight trying to hit you. That'll get you a lot more points than just hitting it while it's slowly moving up and down behind it's shield.

The difficulty increases in relation to your score, NOT the number of levels you beat. You'll know you got to a higher difficulty level when the Qotile's shield changes color (I think the first change (to blue) is around 70-75,000 points or so)

Yar's Revenge is still my fav Atari 2600 game to play and the game I remember spending hours playing (that and River Raid). The GB YR was pretty good too.

Don't feel bad Dahne. I had to explain everything to one of my friends who never played Atari either.

I started the game and he said "What's wrong with the picture?"

It is an excellent game tho. I played it for hours at a time as a kid.

Yep.

Once you get high enough, the neutral zone will dissappear, and the missile will move friggin FAST.

Also remember that the Qotile can kill you in the neutral zone.
