N64 Hardware Question

This has to do with the Nintendo 64 Expansion Memory Pak. When I got it and installed it, I had to take out some other pak. Just what was the purpose of that anyway? My main question isn't that, however, it's this. An online friend needs an expansion pak and I'm offering him mine...but I don't know what happened to my original pak (likely got thrown out) so can an N64 work without ANY pak in that slot or would it mess up the unit? It's not really a big deal as I have two N64 units and I won't be using the unit without the expansion pak anyway...but I'd like to know about this whenever I do want to use that other unit.

AFAIK, it's just a jumper. I don't even know 100% if it's necessary.

You need to have somthing inserted in the expansion slot or the N64 wont power up.

Weither it's the memory expansion pak or the jumper pak one of them needs to be in as it completes the circuit.

I've never used one in mine and it works just fine..

ask your friend to send you the regular pack and you send him the expansion one. I am just guessing that since he doesn't have one... he didn't bother taking his original out...
