Fun with the SEGA Saturn over Spring Break

Haven't played my Saturn all that much in the past month, so what better to do on a lazy Thursday morning than play some Saturn goodies.

I played two games and had a blast. One US, one import. One dirt cheap, one super expensive. It's the kind of experience you can only find on Saturn. :p

First I fired up an ole favorite SLAM N JAM 96. I love this game, and I challenged Magic and Kareem's All Stars team. Boy are they TOUGH on HARD difficulty!!!

I played 4 minute quarters... and it came down to the 4th quarter... the winding seconds. I was down 99 to 101.

I put the ball in the hands of Virgil Johnson... (John Stockton in the game) felt a moment of seperation and went to lay up the ball! Tie game!

The CPU heaves a full court prayer... no good!

101 all, to Overtime!

I ended up winning 134-127. O___O
Hahaha, Kareem went nuts on me. 76 points, 6 steals, 6 assists and 8 rebounds. WOW.

Virgil Johnson led the way for my team as he paced us with a cool 54 points. :)

Awesome game (both THAT game and the game itself). It's sorta like Konami's RUN N GUN.

Next, I fired up highly sought after import SENGOKU BLADE. It reminds me a TON of Psychic Assassin Taromaru, in terms of mood, what not with all the demons and Japanese-y horrors. It's a horizontal shooter featuring various entities... so no ships here, it's like the old NES game LEGENDARY WINGS. I beat the game twice and really enjoyed it. And glad I purchased it. The bosses are pretty huge evil creations, often going thru many stages before demise.

I saw copies of SB go on eBay recently for 130+. OUCH. I got mine just in the mail yesterday for LESS THAN HALF that.

YES. There were a couple arcade games like that put out by various Japanese publishers in the mid 90s...good stuff, and probably pretty darn close to arcade perfect on the Saturn. Can't remember the other game names, but there's a couple in there that are horizontal.

All right, time for more scintillating Saturn conversation!

I've been downloading a ton of Saturn games from IRC, including titles I normally wouldn't have any interest in playing. Among them was Digital Monsters S... this one's best described as a supercharged version of the little virtual pet keychains everyone used to carry around in the late 90's. The gameplay (what there is of it) is largely the same... you've got to keep your monster clean, full, and happy so it'll evolve into different forms. Unlike the more passive Tamagotchi, the monsters can be trained to fight opponents, which adds some much-needed excitement to the game.

Digimon S is nothing special when compared to the most impressive games on the Saturn, but as a virtual pet simulation, it excels. There are a lot more options here than you'll find in a wimpy little keychain, and the interface is really cool, like something Bill Gates' great-great-grandchilden would release for computers in the distant future. If you're a fan of these games (or just enjoyed the first season of the Digimon cartoon), you'll be pretty happy with this.

You should be able to beat that price on eBay. Finding one in a local store (at a good price) can be a challenge these days.

true that funk buddy I bought my first saturn(w/ switch mod) for 75, my mod chipped saturn for 90 and a plain saturn for 20 so it's possible although I paid through the nose for my first 2 saturns, but they were worth it

is radiant silvergun available for download too? im not sure if i would feel comfortable modding my brand new saturn.suprnova.org sometimes has some good Saturn games up. They had RS up but the music was seriously off - first stage BGM play the title screen music

OT - that file came as an .NRG (Nero disk image) is there a way to fix the audio problem?

i think the best wav to get burns is by getting someone over the next to mail you a burn. then just reimburse them the $1.52 Media Mail shipping and how ever many cds they used, maybe even another burned game.

think it be a good idea to do some mailing program like that around the forums?

Uhhhh, I'm going to guess "no" since that's rather, you know, illegal. I know there's the possibility that anyone and everyone here has at least one bootleg but please, let's not start making 'bootleg video game' clubs. I for one want this site to keep going and not get cracked down on by the ridiculous DMCA cops...

I believe there was two or three models of the Saturn. Only the version with the round power buttons can be modded. Versions with the oval button cannot be modded. You can find modchips for the Saturn pretty cheap. I picked mine up for $5-$10. A friend of mine did the soldering as I am butterfingers when it comes to that stuff. He said it was quite easy to do. The Saturn comes apart quite easily.
