I've been biting my tongue for a long time, but there's been something REALLY cool in the works for classic/retro gamers for awhile. With our plans finalizing I thought I'd share it with you.

You're probably well aware of E3, the industry's monstrous event where every game company under the sun exhibits to the world's media and buying executives, primarily to promote their goods for the year ahead?

Well check out the E3 site this year.

http://www.e3expo.com

Notice a certain "retro" look to it? Of course you do. Next, allow me to direct your attention to a piece of the floor plan.

http://www.e3expo.com/downloads/pdf/floorplans/kentia.pdf

Notice the "History of Gaming" sections near the top? They look pretty small on the floorplan but that's 2400 square feet in all.

Finally, check out the Exhibitor list.

http://www.e3expo.com/exhibiting_info/exhibit_sales_info/list/

That's right! Classic Gaming Expo will be exhibiting INSIDE of E3, introducing over 70,000 attendees to the wonders of retro gaming! The History of Gaming is a special exhibit that E3 invited us to design, produce, and display at their show this year. John, Sean and I have been mad busy (with the assistance of many very good people who are also quite good at keeping a secret!) with the floorplans and event production. All we have to do now is show up.

What does it all mean? Well for starters, both E3 and CGE are certain that this will spark some interest within the industry. Will it result in more retro compliations, remakes, and unearthed goods? WE HOPE SO! The exhibit is divided into two pieces. On one "set" we have a timeline of sorts, with interactive displays by year. On the other side, the Digital Press innovation "80's Living Room" returns in gigantic proportion, a 1200 square foot living room divided by a hallway of classic coin-op machines. We're really excited with the display and we've got some tremendous talent and support right there with us. There will also be display kiosks with selected CGE museum artifacts on display.

We're expecting to be rather busy that weekend :)

So if you were planning on attending E3, STOP BY and see the "mini CGE". If you're not, no sweat, go to CGE in August - we'll be bringing a little of E3 to CGE for you too!

Game. ON. SERIOUSLY!

I'm amazed...I've never come across a community run by somebody who got so much done. o_O

I've always wished I could go to E3 in the past...and now I want to go even more.

But I'll probably never get to go ever :(

I'll be eagerly awaiting post expo news and pics.

It's about time classic games got their due at E3. I went when I was 10 or 11 (one of my good friend's Dad in marketing for gaming). It was the year that the Nintendo people stole the giant Sonic from Sega's booth, deflated it, and threw it in a pool at a hotel! I went again a few years ago...maybe I should call my friend and see what he's up to that week.

EDIT:
Maybe I'm not thinking of E3 when that happened. I was peeking around the website and saw that E3 didn't even start until 1995, so I either have the wrong expo or the wrong year. Not sure which. Was there another expo before E3 started?

Ah! So the cat's now officially out of the bag! Well, I'm sure that I'm not alone in wishing the CGE folks congrats on being THE major retro-presence at this - truly - one of the biggest videogame con/meets in the world. And, dare I say, this might increase attendance at CGE'04 quite a bit? Imagine how the move to San Jose followed by THIS might affect attendance?

Hey, they know talent and class when they see it. Congrats again guys. Major kudos.

You know, I have this feeling that the attendance for the show may be way more than expected. Is there any plan to gauge interest in going to CGE? I'd say if you even get 20% of the attendees to check out the CGE area, and half of those say they would go, that's way more than any show thus far, and even with double the space, would be hard to handle. I'm just saying... more people = more problems.

Neato boss cool! And stuff. I too wish I could see it in person. Someone had better take pictures when the time comes. :)

As for bouncing.. seems the Avatars are having a party in here. I especially like the dancing Mario in the middle of all the big breasted avatars. LOL

You know Achika...they still give you your diploma even if you don't go to the ceremony :)

I know because I decided to work the day of my graduation, my mom was a bit disappointed, at least until she realized I saved her $200+ on grad. gowns and other stuff... :)

This sounds cool, I'd love to go to something like this sometime...

Yes, I was one of those who was keeping it a secret since December. That was hard to do ;) Look for about 35 vintage arcade games supplied from myself and a few others.

Just in case you dont know, E3 is a trade-only event and is not open to the general public. Individuals who are not able to document their direct, professional affiliation to the interactive entertainment industry are not qualified to attend. Applications will not be processed without complete information and identification. :(

These things are always held in California, aren't they? Nothing good is in the North-East anymore. Hell, even Apple stopped going to the MacWorld NYC so I can't even see my favorite computer company or iCEO in person anymore. :embarrassed:

We chatted with the E3 people today and shared out layout. We need to "pull it in" a little bit (we really kinda hogged the aisles with this design) but it's otherwise a "GO".

Here's the "living room" side:

... and here's the "interactive museum" side:

Amazing how 2400 square feet looks so small when you have so much you need to cram in there!

Atari and Intellivision living rooms? Are these going to be decorated depicting the era or is it just a couch with a TV and the game system? An 80's theme living room would just be too cool. Give people shock value seeing a TV with VHF and UHF knobs....heheheheh

This is good news, indeed!!

My proposal: Do not only display the past, but also make sure to demonstrate that classic gaming is still alive today. If this display of the history of video games should result in more interest of gaming today and even in more retro-compilations etc., demonstrate with a big bang that the interest today is still there and classic games can be sold and make a profit.

I'd display all the retro compilation games (PS1, N64, DC, and in particular on the current systems, everything you can think of) and make sure that 'playstation 2' and 'Gamecube' - signs catch the eye.

Sure, game publishers are aware that there are compilation disks, but a forceful and comprised demonstration of all the retro compilation games might give them some ideas to invest further in unexplored areas of classic gaming.

The floor plan looks great! I keep seeing announcements about this all over the place, "History of Videogames at E3". This is such a HUGE opportunity for CGE to really get connected with the industry. I mean, of all people, CGE and Intellivision Productions get picked, out of all the possibilties out there. I think it's so great to see that all the dedication and hard work that you guys have been putting into this for years is finally paying off with the recognition you deserve.
