View Full Version : How do you display your collection?

I am very envious and enjoy the pictures some of you put up of your Game Rooms. Since I am married with children and live in a small house my Game collection has long been sent to storage. In 10 years it has been sent to a coat closet which it outgrew. It was then sent to the garage and recently relocated to a storage unit 2 miles from my house. Currently my collection sits in stasis in 10 rubbermaid storage bins. When I catch a "find" on ebay, garage sale, or goodwill store the product usually gets sent to a new bin and will not be tested for a year or more. Every few months I pull one lucky Console out and play it for a few days. I have switched to collectiing hand held systems since I can still store those at the house (for now anyway). Anyway where do the rest of you keep your collections? Feel free to post pics...I can always dream...

Shh...don't give them any ideas...it's a secret to everybody...that I have some games, that is.
I have a small VCR tapes shelf that I bought last year (or was it late 2002?) that I've filled up the bottom shelf of with Neo Geo (and bigger) stuff, but I can't start putting bigger game boxes on higher shelves because then there would be a shelf too small to put enough stuff on. Sort of an issue with waste and the like.
Right now I've got a lot of stuff packed away in boxes; I don't even know where my Demo Kiosk (courtesy o' maxlords) Dreamcast is o_O

I used an old cabinet/shelf/drawer thing I had when I was a kid and everything which doesn't fit on there in some way (which is actually quite a few things) gets displayed on my dresser, my entertainment stand, my nightstand, on top of my TV... I should probably invest in more shelves.

I've got all my games in a small spare bedroom. I used to use old bookshelves to store/display the games. But I've been building custom ones to replace them, so far I've got two built, but one still needs to be installed. If you have the skills or know someone who does, custom made shelves are the best way to go. The first one I made was built to hold DVD size games and boxed Genesis games, so it's very flexible as to what I can put in it. My new one is nearly all adjustable shelves so that I can move shelves around as my collection grows.

I have a tall and wide 5 shelve cargo bookshelf that is two layers deep of games, except the bottom shelf which hold larger PC boxes and decks of cards. It holds about 700 games. Then I have a thin, cheap shelf unit that barely holds 200 cartridges that's 8 shelves high, spaced to hold my NES collection and a few dozen other carts from the 32X and VCS. I have a roll cart jammed with classic and modern PC games in moderate and smaller box cases, holding about 60 computer games. Off to the other side of the room there's a CD rack with another holding 40 CD cases of PC games from the 90's and some earlier 2000 titles. Under one of my beds are four long, plastic containers storing a few hundred N64, SNES, and Geness cartridges. Then there's the dresser that has a drawer for housing all my power and video cables, another two drawers holding another 200 Genesis and SMS boxed and complete games. A fourth drawer holds magazines and misc walkthroughs. One of my closets stores a few speaker systems and consoles not in use along with arcade sticks. In the bathroom I have a toy chest where I stash all of the controllers for every system, over 50 accessories, system mouses & their pads, guns, ect. On the table my TV stands on there's a small CD tower for TG-16 and TurboCD games, then there's a 50-disc tower on the ground filled with Dreamcast games. In the attic over the house I have several dozen of arcade boards stored in boxes and a supply of sticks and buttons. In the space above our detached garrage I have quite a few dozen marques, panes of glass for arcade windows, more controll switches and artwork, power supplies and so forth for building and refurbishing arcades.
When I move out I really need to build some custom shelves for my games + systems in a game room, then some more shelves in a barn/workshop to hold arcade goodness.

Think long and hard about what you want to use it for and then make sure it will hold more than what you currently have.
If you want to go the ultra cheap route, find used wood. I'll get old solid wood (solid oak sometimes) dressers and bookcases from the trash. Cut pieces to fit my needs and then sand off any old finish and then refinish it to my liking.
For around $20, you can build something that would cost hundreds new and will be of higher quality than anything from Ikea.
Nothing special, really. They're stacked up on shelves and some are in drawers due to lack of space.

I custom built with the help of my father in law all shelves in a converted garage...With that being said, maybe you can work out a deal with your wife to find some space in the house to at least have SOME of your stuff to place. I too am married with a newborn son, so I know how those conversations about where to put game stuff can go! Here is the link to my gameroom pics

FTW! I have one with the glass doors to display the parts of my collection I use the most and for the combined DVD collection of my fiance and I. After getting it all together, putting in the extra shelves, putting on the glass doors and mounting to the wall, it looks great.

My collection loves the bookcases. I recently salvaged some that were on their way to the bin and they currently sit on top of one of my chests of drawers, proudly displaying my PS2 collection. :) Reminds me- my own RoD probably could use an update at some point.

Well, much of my collection is packed away in closets and in tons of plastic totes, but what I do have on display generally just dominates the majority of my living room. I use a handy 16 unit bookshelf from Ikea for most of my software that isn't packed away. Also, multiple other smaller shelving units round out much of my older cd-based and handheld collections.
Here's some pics and a vid of my current setup.

Uh Which one? There were 2 Lunar's on the PlayStation, both came in the Big outer boxes. The ones on the left are Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete. The one on the right is Lunar 2 Eternal Blue. The big box in the middle is Arc The Lad.

I'm also going to buy these soon, and one of those glass vitrines (I don't remember the name).
My so called collection is all over the place. I have most of my games in a shelf with doors, some on my writing table and some are stored with my art books. I'm running out of space here. My consoles are stored in a lovely big prima tv stand, it fits most except for my GC and DC. Some accessories are in my drawer.
That said, finally after 1,5 years the finnish Ikea has got some Mikael pc corner workstations again, hoorah. When I get one of those, a few Billy bookshelves, the glass vitrine and maybe a new drawer my storage space would increase dramatically, not even speaking of the time when I actually move out of home. Now if I just found some spirit to make one of those NES controller coffee tables.

Most of my collection is located under the bed with a few exceptions. I just don't have too much room to put them anywhere else. Books are on my bookshelf along with some game memorabilia and I live in a small house so I can't really display it anywhere else. It is all easy to get to though.

Here's a Custom Shelving Guide (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=38837) I did a few years ago, with step by step instructions. If you've got a lot to display, and limited space in which to do it, custom-made shelving is the only way to go. Good luck.

http://ryaan1234.googlepages.com/Img_0217.jpg
They're pretty big, I'm about 5'11 and they are a few feet taller than me. I have 2 of these solid wood shelves. I bought them at a garage sale a few months ago for $60. All I had to do was clean them up a bit and paint them black. This picture is kinda old, btw. I have both of them set up with all my games in them. I'll have to get a newer pic of them so you can see how cool they really are. They easily hold 150 NES games, and my entire SNES, Gameboy, Atari 2600, DS, N64, PS2, XBOX, and Gamecube libraries, not to mention all of my gaming magazines, CDs, VHS tapes, and books. I also have a metal wire-looking shelf that currently holds my computer and Vectrex and a 125 CD rack that holds my PS1 games.

My collection is part at my dad's house and part at my mom's house.
At my mom's downstairs is a HDTV with 360 games and DVDs in a stand under it.
Upstairs is a entertainment center that has shelves where I hold a tv, systems, PS2 games, handheld games, wii games, psx games and various controllers and stuff. Next to it is a shelf with genesis, snes, nes, and vhs tapes.
At my dad's they're all in my room. I have a small tv stand with systems and a tv. A spinning shelf thing that holds dc, gc, and n64 games, and dvds.
My extra systems are on a bookshelf with my books.

I went with cheap walmart bookcases when I had things more organized and cd shelving for the large nes collection. Plastic stackable draws make great atari 2600 game holders (around 100) each I believe. If your in a hurry plastic cargo shelving is great too. Custom shelving is awesome but not good for everyone. Over all it depends so much on your space and your collection the right call may be hard to find.

Tasty brew you have displayed there buddy.
Chimay is awesome.
As for my display. Right now, it is displayed in highly decorative cardboard boxes that are labeled so that I know what is in what. Look at my collection in my sig. I numbered the boxes and in the comments of my collection say which box each game is in.
My best display was when I lived with another dude where I filled up a basement. I need to get onto videogamecollectors.com and track that down. They said they converted it, but I have no clue how to find it, I will edit this post when I do find it though.
Does anyone use a cabinet with glass doors to protrect their stuff? I just bought a gigantic 77"x39" lighted one for only $50, but I have to add the shelves (should hold 5 or 6, easily), as they were missing. Here it is so far with just a few gaming books in it:

I try to hide everything I own so they're either hidden in this thing (http://www.daniafurniture.com/?page=shop/flypage&page_back=shop/category_items&offset=0&product_id=1784&category_id=1daa0d19ea4b945e437120f02c136ddd), or they get shuffled away in a closet or storage bins. I like playing games, but I think they're a huge eye sore and they don't really flow well with my cold modern simple apartment.
White Knight - be careful with glass cases, the metal contraptions that hold up the glass shelves are generally cheap and fail in time. I have plenty of customers who just came in one morning to find a glass shelf in their case had fallen for no apparent reason. They generally lose a few thousand dollars in stuff, in your case it will just create a huge mess most likely. I tell everyone to reinforce the shelves yourself and not to trust the 40 cent piece of metal that connects the glass shelf to the frame.

All shelves are junk I bought at Wal Mart. I modified the tall shelf with the systems on it by drilling in screws to make the shelves closer together at the top, with a big empty space on the bottom. And notice how the shelf on the left is shorter, It's the same product but they started making them smaller to save money. Now my shelves are mismatched! And my SNES and Genesis games are in a tub under the table, I don't have any room to display them anywhere else. I need to fix that, I think I'll move that joystick and powerglove and put them next to the MVS games.

^QFT. Walmart = gaming storage's best kept secret. I store my games in those same shelves. I stack my consoles and peripherals on these other wicked cool, super cheap shelves that they sell. The best part is that they're completely configurable, kinda like Legos. You can stack them as high or as wide as you need:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v450/Weareninja/Gaming/DSC02966.jpg
With a little unscrewing and reconfiguring, I could add the two sets of shelves in the pic together, or add 5 more if I got the urge... If vertical space was an issue, I could build up. If horizontal space was an issue, I could build lengthwise. The best part is that it's all super cheap...

I have six different five-shelf book shelves I use for the majority of my game collection. I try to display everything spine out but that varies depending on hich games I'm displaying. My only rule is that I'm able to see the title of the game regardless of how I have them stacked.

My collection kindof sucks compared to alot of people here. I have about 400+ games now, but yeah.
Anyways. This picture was taken in 2005 after the release of CV Dawn of Sorrow. I didn't own a PSP at the time and my DS game collection sucked because I wasn't that big into at the time as the PS2 was still really big then.
Anyways. Behind those stacks of games, there are more games. All my cartridge games aside from my boxed GBA/GB/GBC games are in a box so they're not visible.
If ever get a recent picture, since there is no room to put them. My PSP games are stacked along the side of the left(viewing the pic) cabinet next to my monitor. There are now 34 of them. My DS games are actually stacked on another table, 24 of those. I had to reorganize the top and there are games laying down in piles there and then piles on the front of my desk to both sides of the computer monitor.
Even though I don't have them set up well or anything like that. Everything there but a small few are in mint condition. My collection would probably look much larger than it does if I displayed it on a bookshelf like alot of people here do. Maybe I should do that sometime later.
I think Bloodreign and Ed Oscuro are the only ones at this board that have seen all the games at that time(2005.) I ended up pulling everything out so I could show the games in the back and the names were readable. Then I took out all my cartridge games and took pictures.

Right now the majority is sitting in plastic bins. When I have them displayed, I line them up on plastic shelves. Nothing fancy.

I have most of my games on a modified rotating magazine shelf.

Here's mine from my Room of Doom thread. (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=121339)
http://www.videogamecollectors.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=51799&g2_serialNumber=1For some reason, I love this setup. Of course his entire room is awesome... but this corner is just a thing of beauty. I think it's the way that it's just begging for someone to sit down and play some games. So many other collections aren't nearly as inviting.

I mainly have 1 huge set of shelves that are on one wall, they are the kind that are attached with huge metal runners, they are very strong & could be filled with xboxes & still not fall off.

For some of the rarer stuff i keep it in a glass cabinet which means it doesn't get scrunched up on the shelves & i get to look at it & have easy access. Every so often i rotate the stuff thats in there with new stuff.

Here is a picture of my displace case, which I keep in my room for now. It is huge. About 6'6 tall, and maybe a foot and a half wide. On the botttom I have mostly heavier stuff, such as my books. Besides the wood bottom, there are four glass shelves, where I can put ablout 30 games, double rowed (so about 60 per shelf). It is in the process of being organized, so bear with me. Do you guys recognize anything?

I don't mean to be a complainer, but the big mirrored shelf thing I find a little creepy. There's also a lot of wasted space on some of the shelving in member examples - I'm happier with short shelving made for VHSes.
Glass doors would be nice for keeping dust out, but I haven't found dust to be a major problem. Of course, nothing beats some well-organized plastic filing cabinets and cardboard boxes, in my view.
So I guess my setup is mostly the same as it was in 2004. I recently swapped out an old sagging bookshelf for a new one that aligns nicely with the corner it's in instead of sitting in at an angle. It's got shelves reinforced against sagging with a crossbar - I always somewhat dislike these due to the lip on the front but it's better than having the sections fail.

There is a ton of wasted space, I agree 100%. I could drill a few more spaces and add two or three more shelves, that's what I was planning on. I wanted glass doors for protection. But the thing is massive. Why do you find it creepy though?

You should get these. Cheap, durable and they look nice. I suggest buying one of those shelfs meant to go on the wall if you want a smaller 3 level one, it's great for housing controllers and stuff. I have 2 billy shelfs and one of these smaller ones, and even in a small room they look nice and spacy.
