SF Alpha 1 PS One secret character help

Ok, I did everything the FAQ's have told me to do, downloaded a complete save from Gamefaqs, and tried for some time. How in the blue hell do you select Akuma, Dan, and Bison???? I can get them in the random select so I know their unlocked. Am I missing something here??? I've never beaten it with these 3 and wanted to give it a shot tonight but it seems that I am completely SOL. :(

there's a specific code you have to do during random select in order to obtain the character for certain. I forget what they are but I've done them before, as I spent way the hell too much time on SFAlpha on the PSX. It was the first game I got for the system when I bought it.

Are you sure the save is complete? There are two ways to choose the characters: The button press method and the "Down Method", in order to use the "Down Method", you have to have the following completed (borrowed from game winners)

Bison:
Beat Game on 8 Star Difficulty without ever changing characters and have Bison be the final boss.

Akuma:
Beat him after going through the 10 Super Combo method* with difficulty of 5 or more stars.

Dan
Beat him on level 6 or higher difficulty.

Save the game after each time, and they'll be in memory. Then you simply press Down at the ? for the one you want:

Ok, update. I can press down and get Dan. I played through it with him, got the master ranking thingy, and it said a new character was available when the end screen came up. However, pressing down multiple times only gets me Dan. Here is the link to the save I downloaded:

i know you can do it...i had everything unlocked years ago ;)

i think for akuma...maybe you have to press left or up on RYU, instead of the random select...and for bison, maybe left on the random...i can't remember which charactors you have to be on...but you pick them all 'outside the box' if that makes sense

i used to have official strategy guide for this wish i still did :o
