View Full Version : Sega will never make a sequel to Nights?

I've heard and read that Sega said that they would never make another Nights game. I'm kind of conflicted on this. While I would love too see what a Nights game would look like on a next gen system I also like how it's exclusive to the Saturn. Either way it doesn't matter because I know Sega will make another one. Why? Why not Sega hasn't had that many new ideas lately with their translations of cartoons. They have run Sonic into the ground. Another Nights is exactly what they need. Any thoughts on wether or not they will produce another Nights game?

I think we should be glad another one hasn't been produced yet. It will probably turn out to be mediocre, or above average at best, and then all it will cause is a lot of fanboy whining about how it's diluting the original.

....much the way this particular fanboy whines about FFVII destroying his favorite series... :P

It would be crass of me to point out that you missed the irony here (and I don't think you did), but yes, they need another NiGHTS. I just have a feeling that unless they kept the number of sequels low the quality of the series has degraded.

"NiGHTS into Dreams" is Sonic Team's baby. Yuji Naka loved working on it and doesn't want to do a disservice to the game he loves so, for himself, for his team, and for fans of the game.

However, all prosperity is not lost. The main character NiGHTS has had many cameos in SEGA's games, though usually the games are developed by Sonic Team. There was a NiGHTS pinball table in "Sonic Adventure" that was more or less a Dreamcast remake of the original in full 3D. If you play the table (and don't shot me if I make a mistake in my discription, I'm going from memory here) and knock down the right aisles, bumpers, etc., and get a good poker hand's worth of cards, a door will open to another table. At this table you can collect more cards to form more hands. If you do things correctly the ball (played by Sonic) will be launched into NiGHTS's world, do a fly by, do aerial tricks through the loops that "NiGHTS into Dreams" is so famous for, then fly through the Ideya Chamber, thereby placing an Ideya atop its pedestal. Afterward, you fly back out onto the original table. All this is accompanied by the great music from the original. What happens when you get all five Ideyas to the Chamber? I don't know; unfortunately, I've never made it to that point. I have been meaning to do it for awhile (I've tried a few times in the past.) but I just can't seem to get around to it lately. The table is quite a lot of fun, so I think I'll have to dust of the ol' DC and get things going again soon. I must say, however, that I have gotten over 1000 rings directly from the Sonic pinball table.

NiGHTS's appearances aren't limited to only "Sonic Adventure" though. In "Sonic Adventure 2" a spinning sculpture of NiGHTS's head is aloft a building top in Shadow's level Radical Highway. In the Gameboy Advance game "Sonic Pinball Party" one of the three available pinball table sets is "NiGHTS into Dreams." (The other sets are "Sonic The Hedgehog" and "Samba de Amigo.") The table in this section plays more or less like the NiGHTS game. You must shoot the ball (which leaves a trail of stars like NiGHTS) into the Ideya Chamber three times, after which you are dualized (like Claris or Elliot were in the Saturn original) with NiGHTS. Then you must shoot the ball into the right hole to get the Ideya. Repeat to get all five of them, and then shoot the Ideya hole to go to the boss fight. The table then changes to the new boss variant of the original table. Fly loops around the boss and it's history. Onto the next stage! Like the SA table, I haven't beat this one either yet, but I imagine it would just loop back to the first stage. Either that or some nice music with end credits!

Last reference that I can recall of NiGHTS in another game is the aforementioned "Samba de Amigo." This is another one of those fun "music and moving" sort of games. Trust me, though, when I say "SdA" is much more the workout than "Dance Dance Revolution." After a song set of three I've got to take a breather or let another player at the maracas. Anyway, like a lot of great games this one features some music blasts from the past. The default "in-game" songs that you unlock are all either remixes or original versions of popular Latin dance songs. However, the songs that could be "downloaded" using the Dreamcast's online connectivity were all original versions of classic SEGA game music. There was "Afterburner," there was "Burning Rangers," there was a ton of neat tunes, but one of my favorites -- if not THE favorite -- was the ending song from "NiGHTS into Dreams," "Dreams, Dreams." It makes the perfect cool-down song. (I put downloaded in quotes because, like many extras in Dreamcast games, the additional Samba songs were already on the disc and only needed the "keys" which were the extra files to open them.)

Though there could be more nods and winks from other SEGA games towards NiGHTS, those are all I know of. In a way the pinball iterations of NiGHTS are like sequels or remixes of the original. But, in my roundabout way of saying things, I doubt that Sonic Team would ever make another true entry into the NiGHTS universe.

Anyone else know of any other NiGHTS cameos?

Sega and ST have never said they'd never make a sequel, although I believe at one point they said there'd never be one for the Dreamcast.

I read once that they even got into extremely early development (mechanics mainly) on the DC, and had a lot of issues with the analogue controls early on, which pretty much canned the project. Probably would've costed too much to figure out all the issues. That was just something I read on some Japanese site, which means I give it a bit more credit than the Japanese sites that are prone to spoutting out rumors.

Wasn't there a GBA port of Nights that was included as a bonus feature on PSO for the Gamecube? What ever happened to that?

I really wouldn't want to see a new Nights, but I would love to see a modern port of the original game, and especially see Christmas Nights as a bonus feature. There's no real point in a sequel when most people have never seen the original.

And I would REALLY love to see new games that took advantage of the 3D-ish platform style that Nights used. Give me a real Sonic game that plays like that, and I'll never ask for another thing again. These virtual world games are just dull when compared to the great 2D games of the past.

Oddity, today I picked up a brand new box copy of NIGHTS. I did open the box to make sure it was new, and inside was the cardboard, the manual, the game disc shrinkwrapped, a controller bundled up and in a plastic baggie unwrinkled, and everything pristine. Got excited, slid everything back in, and purchased it. $20. I'm sure it's not rare or anything, but new and a free controller with it. Alright! :-P Now I just need a Saturn :)

Am I freaking out, or did this one just capitalize almost every word?

I heard in a magazine (I think GI.) that the creator says "The more people beg for it, the more I want to make it my next project."

So get begging! I seriously think eventually there will be one. Maybe for the next systems.
