Baby seal clubbing in NES Ice Climber?!?

I've got one of those 190-in-1 NES multicarts several years ago. Contained mostly early Japanese NES titles. One of them was Ice Climber. I never played the game before playing on this multicart, so I was pretty surprised that the gameplay involved bashing baby seal enemies with your sledge hammer (or whatever it is). Tasteless but fun.

Anyway, I was up for a night of "clubbing", so I booted up Ice Climber last night on my NesterDC disc. I was shocked to see that there were no baby seals to kill in the game. The seals were replaced with some other kind of enemy which made it absolutely no fun to play. I'm 100% positive that there were seals in that multicart version but now I can't find the stupid thing to confirm it. Were the seals taken out of the US version of the game (makes sense) or could it have been a hack I played?

I'm positive that it was Ice Climber. Maybe they removed the seals from the US version? Can anyone with a Famicom Ice Climber confirm this?

Yeah the seals got replaced with these snowmen guys in the US version. Nintendo even bothered to change the seals in the Ice Climber stage of Super Smash Brothers Melee into the snowmen.

Oddly the FDS Ice Climber game has the snowmen.

I always played the baby seal version...it´s a good game, but i hate the last part when you have to climb catching some fruits/vegetals...

First thing that came to mind, UHF is a great movie!

I'll have to try Ice Climber out on my recently acquired pirate Famicom to see if any seal clubbing is contained within.

I still can't think of a better reason than what I came up with as to why Nintendo yanked the seals. What still gets me is that they didn't yank the birds and replace them with something different.
