For me it would be a tie between 2600, NES and Sega Master System. Since I can't vote for all three, I voted for the Dreamcast because it can emulate all three.

Being the huge dreamcast fan I am I still must admit that the emulation is tricky due to the slow speeds of the dreamcast emulators with certin games.

DREAMCAST easily wins with me.
I agree with exposure completely the Dreamcasts premature demise is and was largely due to the "hype machine" wich was the PS2, and the ignorance of "casual gamers" flooding what was once a nice small and most importantly cohesive hobby market with uneducated purchases of crap games and overhyped crap games like superman 64. Anyway thats for a whole nother discussion.
Honerable mention goes to:
Turbographix-16
Snes
Sega Saturn
and even the PS one, but it has cursed gaming as much as it blessed it.
LATER GAMERS!!!

Super NES has got to be my all time favorite console. Moving from the NES graphics, the SNES blew me away when it was released. It has my favorite games of all time on it. Super Metroid, Zelda: A Link to the Past, Final Fantasy III, and Chrono Trigger. Its the only console I still play daily to this day.

Best System Ever:
Nintendo 64

It has "Mario Kart 64", "Paper Mario", "Diddy Kong Racing", and "Banjo-Kazooie", What's not to love! :)

Runner Up:
PlayStation

The Only games I have played 3 games for PSX, But So far I only like "Final Fantasy 7" and "Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Battle 22" (I hate "2Xtreme"!)

Other Systems:

Atari 400 (Do the "Donkey Kong"!)
NES ("Mega Man" is in the House!)
Atari 2600 (Gotta' Have "Pitfall"!)
Game Boy ("Tetris"!)
Game Boy Color (Must Play "Harvest Moon"!)
Gamecube ("Super Smash Bros. Melee" is a Must have!"
Sega Genesis (Because "Sonic 3 & Knuckles" is cool)
Sega CD ("Sonic CD" Kicks Butt!)
Sega 32X ("Knuckles Caotix" Rocks!)
PlayStation 2 (I have only Played "Crash: The Wrath of Cortex" and "Crash Nitro Kart")
X-Box (It's good to fart together!)

I have 8 different systems including the Dreamcast, PS2 and X-box, but the system that still holds a special place in my heart is my Atari 5200. It's still the system I enjoy the most...

While I'll never forget the summers I spent playing the 2600 at grandma's house I have to go with the NES. It has my top 5 games of all time.

My top 5 games of all time that happen to all be NES games

1. Tecmo Super Bowl
2. River City Ransom
3. Megaman 2
4. Wall Street Kid
5. Ice Hockey

Well the 2600 really started the home gaming scene, but the NES saved the whole gaming scene. Why? because it had a crap load of fun and innovative games thats why. so my vote goes to the NES.

I couldn't choose based on that. I have 144 NES games, 88 PSX games and if you count Sega CD and 32X, 160 Genesis games.

I think the genesis and dreamcast are the best. Genesis because it had virtua racing, out of this world, and gunstar heros. The dreamcast because it was open for anyone to easly develop home brewed games and apps.

Not a big number compared to what others have on this forum. But a lot in my eyes. Probably if I were to weed out what games I have no intention of playing, I'd probably only have 100 games or so all together. And probably a fatter wallet too. ;)

My favorite(s) would be my Xbox and Cube plus my GBA for on-the-go Monkey-Bashing.

I can't BELIEVE I missed out on adding to this topic a while ago! @_@ @_@

My vote goes to the NES, my first love. The VCS was a beautiful piece of work that really did get better with age, and it takes my second place finish, but even though it really got gaming off the ground and took control of a growing industry, the NES brought back that industry when it collapsed in the mid-1980s. With beautiful and crisp graphics that I believe hold up even today (if they didn't, would we be seeing the retro revival that we are today?), a remarkable controller and controller layout, incredible games that I feel will stand the test of time and characters that have become legendary, the NES is well-deserving of a first-place finish.

Like I said, second (and believe me, a CLOSE second) is the VCS, and my third finisher goes to the Dreamcast. Even if JUST for Chu Chu Rocket and the ushering in of true console online gaming.

The Dreamcast got my vote. it has a huge variety of games and homebrews, you can surf the web or play games online, plus there are soo many cool peripherals like the mouse, keyboard, that fishing thingy, The VMU, lightguns, ETC, ETC. second up would be DUH! the SNES.

Zadoc
03-09-2005, 01:28 AM
I voted Sega Saturn or personal reasons.

An Atari 2600 was my first console ever; Genesis was the first console that I was old enough to buy my own games for, and it instilled in me a misguided love for Sega; NES was the system which brought gaming into the main stream; PSX brought gaming to the forefront of culture; Dreamcast was the king from 1999-2001 and pioneered online console gaming; and Xbox is probably the best home console at the moment; but to me personally Sega Saturn was the best one ever.

No one who did have a NetLink wouldn’t understand the term NetLinker and what if felt to be part of a community of people who all shared a common thread, and all of us were new to the internet. With my NetLink I was introduced to the internet, I played my first online games with this device, I learned how to create a webpage and write HTML… It was a singularly unique experience which cannot happen more than once.

The historical argument for the 2600 being the best system is slightly flawed. If it wasn’t going to be Atari, it would have been someone else. The Fairchild Channel-F was the first reprogrammable home console which beat the 2600 out the door, 1974 saw Magnavox’s first efforts. The point is that if it weren’t Atari it would have been some one else, and we would be having this debate today, regardless.

Well - I picked Nintendo 64 (only 4 little votes) because it was the first really cool gaming system. Sure the current stuff in great, but I started with pong, then atari, thenthe first nintendo, but nintendo 64 was shuch a huge step up and stared the video game wars.

Improved the genres in what way? Graphically?? I think this is forum is the last place you're likely to find a bunch of graphic whores.

The game's the thing, and the gameplay on the NES has yet to be topped in any generation past, present, or future (in my opinion of course). You can have enjoy the graphics of Mega Man X12 Alpha 3 beta 4 all you want, but I'll take Mega Man 2 any day. :D

My vote went to Saturn because I have an affinity for the underdog. It's library contains some of the most gorgeous 2D games in existence (Astal being one of the many...) as well as having the greatest controller ever created, IMO. A close second would be a toss up between Turbografx 16 and PLaystation.

No, I'm talking gameplay mostly. Of course there are exceptions and I love the NES but a lot of the best NES(and SMS) games got superior sequels on SNES and Genesis whether it's Yoshi's Island or Shinobi 3 or Space Megaforce or Zelda 3 or Final Fantasy. I believe platformers, RPGs, racing games, ARPGs, Strategy games, sports games, fighting games, and shooters were all improved and refined overall. Gun games and maybe puzzle games I think were better in 8-bit although it's arguable.

I'm not saying people are entitled to their opinion, I just think the 16-bit era took most of what was done in the previous era and improved it.

I voted for the Super Nes a lot of my best memories (other than the ones i had with my 2600) are linked to this machine.

games that were simply great, at least in my opinion anyways:

1. Super Castlevania IV
2. Indiana Jones Triliogy
3. Young Merlin (kinda cheesy but fun)
4. Warlock
5. Chrono trigger
6. Secret of mana

and many more than this but i am not going to post a bunch :).
well anyways that is my reason for Voting for the Super Nes.

Everything you want is on the Dreamcast. When it was released all the games on there- and let's face it, every genre is well covered, no glaring omissions like (well, triple-A quality) serious racers on the Cube or RPGs on the Bad Boy- simply looked like little masterpieces. And say what you want, I loved gaming online in 2000 and that's not a statement I intend to go back on anytime soon.

Shenmue, MSR, sonic adventure (well, for its time), crazy taxi, soul calibur 1 (STILL infinitely playable to this day and STILL exclusive to the DC), sega rally 2, quake 3, power stone (any coincidence people are begging for a remake? no.)... the list goes on (for a bit, anyway)

Think for a moment, Think about the Playstation.
american , japanese ,

MANY games,, Many games rented, Many games sold,
How many extra's they made for it, How long it survived.
They still rent PSX games , Alot of great titles came to life
on the PSX, People still buy the system and the PSX2 can play PSX games....

What other system compares?

Never mind "the best" because "the best" changes as taste or mood changes. The console that gives me the "warm n fuzzies" is the N64, simply because it was the console that started my love for games. I think that "the best" console was the PSX (Playstation 1) because of the sheer depth and variety in it's library, not to mention it's longevity and sheer domination of it's competition. It's the console that I have taken to "collecting" for. Every time that I fire it up (I play my Playstation games on my PSX, not my PS3), I look at the games and think "wow, these games really WERE awesome for the time".

The SMS would be my favourite but only because of the memories i attach to that. my first console.

the console Pound-for-pound title would have to go to the N64. SM64, Zelda OOT and Goldeneye 64 are consistently and repeatedly in the top 5 of countless 'best console games ever made lists' both in print and online.

But hey, while it's fun to speculate we all know there really is no answer, like trying to compare sportsmen of different era's - it's impossible, they all hold their place in time for their own reasons.

Why not add my two cents. I like the Famicom/NES and the Super Famicom/SNES the best. Those two consoles, along with my cousin's Genesis and Macintosh games, are what I grew up on.

This surely must have been discussed a million times before and I was all set to refer you to the sticky at the top of the Classic Discussions forum. However, I discovered that every single one of those links is wrong (most likely when they switched to the new system it shifted everything around).

I had to do some more searching, and I came up with these:

Best. Game Console. Ever.:
http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3127

Gametrailers.com "Top 10 Consoles":
http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=99756

Those are just the ones I remember posting in (that's how I searched for it). If the links were updated/fixed in that sticky I mentioned, that would be a very effective and powerful tool.

For me it is n64 and genesis, They were from my childhood, my parents had very little money and managed to get me a genesis one year and some games wrapped up in a box, i was so happy. Then later in life they got me a n64 the one year. That was even better. It was the best gift i ever got. I was obsessed with it. I can still see myself opening it. I loved bomberman hero, super smash brothers, pokemon stadium. O i loved them. N64 was the best for me. I also have good memories of the older gameboys and the gbc. ANd playstation amazed me too. It not always about being the best, but what is special to you personally. I did not realize how tight money was for my parents and it really means a lot to me for that, and i know it meant a lot for them to see me happy with it. Sorry, was this suppoesed to just be a quick few word answer, all my emotions are pouring out, lol! I see now how people post so much on here, you can talk about stuff forever.

Magnavox Odyssey, everything else is just pale in comparison:

Cool photo. The Magnavox Odyssey and the Atari 2600 featured the best graphic design and artwork.

Best home video game console? I'll narrow it down to the Atari 2600, the NES, and the SNES, but ultimately, I'd probably choose the NES.

I voted for the Super Nintendo, even though it might not be my favorite. The first Nintendo was my favorite of all time. I've had it for 20 years, and whenever I feel like getting nostalgic, I usually wind up playing a game from there before anything else. That said, there were way too many garbage games for it, and the Super Nintendo was terrific because it built upon the good games and made them better. Zelda (A Link to the Past) is the best Zelda game I've ever played, likewise Super Mario World 2 (Yoshi's Island). Now it terms of sports games or games where you want realism or multiplayer games, then no, modern technology has surpassed the SNES. However, if you really get down to the nitty gritty, bare bones gaming, the SNES is king. It was the last system prior to the availability of true 3D graphics and increased console power. If I were to vote for a multiplayer system, it would be the Nintendo 64.

I'm a bit late, but I definitely have to say the Super NES on this one. I may be a little biased because it's the system I grew up with, but hell, it's still my favorite system ever.

With classic multiplayer games like NBA Jam: TE and Super Bomberman from awesome singleplayer games like Zelda: A Link to the Past and Chrono Trigger, it introduced to me all of the different genres of games in an excellent way. When I was young, my oldest brother also had an NES, but none of the games gave me an epic experience like the SNES did. It may be just being used to SNES stuff, but I honestly think the SNES is greatest system ever, no contest.

I voted NES purely based on my many childhood memories and wasted nights trying to satisfy Peach only to be sent to another castle :(
Before that I even remember the times when I had to borrow a friend's NES to keep my gaming itch at bay. Those were the days of get-togethers with gaming sessions that lasted days.
I do, however, have very fond memories of several of the other consoles listed in the poll but the NES clearly stood out despite the SNES's massive amount of quality games - especially the numerous RPGs I've beaten over the years. How time has passed... I miss the "old" days when I had the time to play games and watch cartoons all day.

Hooray for my first post here, btw :o Looking forward to spending a lot more time here now that I've registered. My lurking days are now officially over :)

My personal favourite is the Sega Saturn, not because it was a great console, but I just love the fact that the internal hardware was basically stuck together thanks to Sega sticking a sister board inside for all the other components to "upgrade it", but the games they managed to create on it are just awesome (Nights, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Burning Rangers etc.).

I had a Master System and a Mega Drive (Genesis), but my memories of them are fading, and most of my memories that remain are playing Sonic The Hedgehog or Micro Machines...
