I have an NES control deck here that isn't working properly. I have already replaced the power adapter with a new one direct from Nintendo, and I replaced the 72-pin connector, but I still have this annoying problem. With any game I try, the foreground graphics (characters, enemies, etc.) do not display. I have perfect scrolling backgrounds and awesome game sound, but no characters! Has anyone seen this before and is there anything I can try to fix it? I hope it's not a bad graphics chip?

It's time to replace the circuit board my friend. Go to any scuzzy old thift store, and snag the cheapest, ugliest NES you can find. Use the circuit board from that NES, and with all the new goodies you've already bought, you should be golden.

Personally, I would keep the old circuit board. It sounds useful. Imagine the challenge of beating Mega Man 2 without being able to see your character or the enemies.

Wise man say to omnedon: The "cheapest" NES is not necessarily the "ugliest".

Ah yes, but Confucius says when one is going to simply gut an NES, it is said to be a waste to gut one that is pleasing to the eye.

I wonder if this could be a faulty replacement connector issue.

Did it only display backgrounds before you replaced the connector?

I have a problem similar to this.

Sometimes when i power on there are small white lines all over the screen, the charachters and sprites all display well (except for being afflicted with white lines) at first i thought it was the connector now after reading this thread i think it could be a different problem.

Somrtimes however it only displays a grey screen of death and sometimes (very rarely) it brings the game up perfectly. any ideas?

That my friend is your very common "dirty cart or dirty connector " problem.
