First off do you collect them or not? Do you collect all or just certain years(like Madden 93,94,95...). There seems to be no real dollar value to collecting sports games since they are very common. But the nostalgic quality alone is probably enough for most of us. For me my all time favorite is Tecmo Super Bowl for the NES but that only lead me to buying up the whole series (2 Nes 1Gb 3 Snes 3Gen 1Psx if there are others let me know).

Also is there such a thing as a rare sports game?

I do. You have to if you want all the games for a system.

And there actually are rare sports games, but their the really oddball ones.

Example would be the Special Editions of Nascar 98,99 for PSX. One came with a special Music CD, the other came with an emblem. Different covers on both.

I collect sports games just because they are fun to break out every once in a while. Besides how can you go wrong when most sports games are a dollar. I'd rather get Madden 95 for a dollar than a cheeseburger.

Yep, just because I'm looking for a complete nes set. I despise watching or playing pretty much any type of sports game. To me it seems like the same thing over and over in every game. The only game I really got into was Basewars for the nes, and that's just because of the robot players, fighting, and upgrading.

you can't that's the great thing about it.

However, I know many of us have experienced the joy of seeing a huge box of games in a thrift store to only look in and find a bunch of madden and pga golf games.

Yeeeah, like I really want 250 extra shitty Genesis titles (well, mostly shitty with a chance of GAME) sitting in here. Like I'm not completely running out of room as it is! If I could go skeet shooting with these damn things, I would!

All in the name of a complete set.

And nostalgic value my ass! Like I really care to play the 1995 Ron Kneucker from NBA Live 95, as opposed to the 1996 Ron Kneucker from NBA Live 96, because he had a great year that year.

I agree with Dangerboy, but I don't even care for the rare ones. I'd take Normy's Beach Babe-O-Rama over 98% of the pure sports games I have.

you totally missed the nostalgic value point.

When my friends come over we set up Tecmo Bowl tournaments and play them all weekend for old times. There are destinct differences between the Tecmo Bowl games so having a complete set makes sense to me.

I will buy sports titles if I find them cheap, like for fifty cents or so. I did that with a few SNES titles, like NHL Stanley Cup (.49 at Gamestop) and NBA Jam (.50 at CD/Game exchange). There are a couple SNES sports titles on my want list that I would pay a dollar for, but for the most part, I only prefer to pick them up cheap. I paid a dollar for NBA Live '96 for SNES because I spent quite a lot of time with it back in the day. However, I refuse to pay more than a dollar for any SNES sports title, no matter how much I like it. The only exception is racing titles. I also have NHLPA Hockey '93 (freebie) and Super Baseball 2020 (freebie, kinda like an update of NES Base Wars).

I'll probably pick up whatever PSX and N64 sports stuff I can find for a dollar or two in the future. The only PSX non-racing sports title I have is Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, unless you count Simpsons Wrestling. I don't have any non-racing sports titles for PS2/GC.

And I do play sports stuff every so often, most often what I'm going to list in my favorites here. The SNES stuff holds nostalgic value for me, and titles like NBA Live '96 are still as fun to me as they were back in the day.

My favorite sports titles:

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater - PSX
NBA Live '96 - SNES
Hot Shots Golf 3 - PS2
NBA Jam - SNES
NBA Jam Tournament Edition - SNES
Super Baseball 2020 - SNES

Yeah, you can tell I pretty much prefer basketball. LOL

Collect what you really like, that's the most important thing. If you like sports games, collect them! You are even in a lucky position becasue they are really cheap as a rule, however, they might not become 'prized' collectibles either (but, who cares?)

I never really liked sportsgames, I always prefered RPGs and action adventure games.

Because I missed out on a lot of PS1 games, I decided lately to catch up with two genres I really like...RPGs and traditional 2D shooters for that system, two genres which can be played on the PS1 in ten years without having the outdated feel; only one aspect was important to go for these two genres: I LOVE them!! :)

I collect them for the collections I plan on completing (Pre-psx, no handhelds)

I'd LOVE to see someone who ONLY collects sports games from pat to present :) Like that japanese guy with his thousands of the same famicom baseball game.

sportgames only must be a relative cheap collection ;)

I do have some sportsgames in my collection but i don't care anything about them (maybe because i hate sport at all :D). Most of them i got with systems. The only sporttitles i play are racing games as you consider them sportgames, but FIFA 3294 etc. ... x_x

On the other hand ... i hate RPG's to, so who am i to say that sportgames are crap :)

I collect them, but I don't 'seek' them. Ever. They just seem to proliferate. I prefer to buy in game lots, and the sports titles are inevitable. When I'm going to buy large lot of games, and I see sports titles, I don't even count them in the total number of games I'm using to make the offer.

games non grata. LOL

Whatever you say, I'm gonna sit here and keep :D

Well, I bought a couple sports games for Genesis. I now have a game with the yellow tab on the side...and that's just about it. I plan on never buying a sports game for the Genesis from this point out.

I actually buy sports games for some of those reasons listed above, primarily the one where I bought the 95 version of NHL just because it was based on the team that went to the Stanley Cup finals :P

I recently got a Genny and Madden 94. Replaying that again after all of these years, put me in the mood to try to get them all, so I'm PASSIVELY seeking all the Madden games for the early systems, just for the hell of it. They're only going to be a dollar or so and I don't really SEEK them out, so if one comes along, I get it.

Its fun to look back at how simple they were back then and how far sports games have come! :)

The thing is, games like Tecmo Bowl CAN have nostalgia value. It's just once the yearly additions came in it blew sports games out of the water and flooded the town.

You see people all the time say "Tecmo Bowl is awesome!" or "Super Tecmo Bowl ROCKS" or you even hear stuff like "Madden is great" you rarely hear "Madden 95 was great" or any other year for that matter.

Personally, I buy them, they add to the collection and make it further complete. But when it comes to playing them....only sports game I will be playing is Bouncers for Sega CD

I'd rather get Madden 95 for a dollar than a cheeseburger.

Fudge that, i'll take a cheese burger any time, unless i'm stuffed then i'll take the madden.

Really, i play some sports vids but i dont get them to collect, i dont care about updated player stats and rosters.

Other than the few sports games I rarely like, I don't bother. I'm not a completist when it comes to sports games, and I don't care for many, so I do it purely for personal enjoyment.

Sports games I like:

Madden - Genesis (first one only)

NFL2K - Dreamcast (first one only, even though I don't have a DC at the moment it was still a great game, imo)

Madden NCAA 2003 - Xbox

NBA Jam - SNES

Mutant Leaque Series - Genesis

World Series Baseball 2 - Saturn

Track & Field - Psx

Golf - NES

Wrestlemania 19 - Gamecube

There are a few others I like, but when it comes to sports games i'm very selective.

OK, if I see a sports game I know is rare or even worth my money I'll buy it.

I still say that I won't buy a sports game for any other reason than knowing it's worth my money, though. o_O

Funny you should mention this - I just made a largish purchase of a bunch of Genny sports titles :)

Normally I don't bother 'collecting' sports stuff, although I will buy a new Hockey/Soccer/Baseball game every few years or so (I *do* like having the updated rosters, and I'm too lazy to try to do it myself).

But for the Genesis I made an exception. I consider the Genny sports stuff 'important' as that's the system the genre really took off on. And when a buddy comes over and wants to go retro, I wanted to have every option available :)

I own a completely sealed Genesis Model 2 NFL '94 Gift Set ( the one that came with the first issue of Sega Magazine and the loose cart of Sonic #1). I WISH that I knew how to play football. If I DID, then I'd buy a Madden game to play on my Genny that I use. I do own Madden 64 and have tried to stumble through it, but you kinda have to know how football works.

I own NHL '95, PGA Tour '96, NBA Jam TE, ESPN Baseball Tonight and am looking for a FIFA game in clean complete condition.

I'm one of those guys who just wants one cart of each kind of sport, just incase I want to play basketball or hockey or such.

Genny Auto Racing "sports" games are a different story. I want as many as I can find. Today I bought clean completes of Mario Andretti Racing and Kawasaki Superbike Challenge.

Like other people have said. It is all for getting compleye set of games. The only old sports game I will play are Madden 93 and NHLPA 93. I believe Tecmo Football 2 for the Genesis is rare.

I do own Madden 64 and have tried to stumble through it,

stumble was all you could do. a good example of how football games got worse before they got better.

Tecmo Super Bowl starts great football games

About 5 years of bad football games

NFL2K football games are great again

The only old sports games that I bought in the past few months are Ice Hocky, Blades of Steel, Bases Loaded, and World Cup Soccer, but it's only because I like those games, not just because they were cheap.

Like most people, I really only collect sport games to maintain a complete collection, that is not to say I don't have other sports games.

The ones I keep are the very few I like, and thats about it. The only exception to the rule are the 3do sports games which I usually got in some sort of package deal, or for free. I won't get rid of them because they are worthless, and a bunch of long boxes look very pretty when lined up :)
