I 'm confused. I have all these empty Sears boxes and I don't know how to tell the difference between a Sears cart and the standard Mattel one.

I even found a complete Sears Hockey, but the cart and overlays said Mattel on them. Is that how they were released?

I think the correct carts are the ones without the licensing (MLB, NFL, NBA, etc.) on them. Some sources say that the white labels are Sears but I do not believe this is correct.

I agree with y-bot on the white label thing. Only the manuals and boxes are different. The cartridge labels and overlay are the same.

For the most part, the white-label carts were games released during the INTV era (post-1984). Keith Robinson has a rather humorous story about this on the Blue Sky Rangers website:
