I bought a few ROCKMAN PS1 discs (previous thread), and I just tried playng them on my PSone using my PS X-Change2 kit. I turn on the PSone, it gives some text and tells me to change the disc and press START. I swap the discs, and the ROCKMAN disc starts to spin. What do I get? A black screen with some Japanese text and a red circle cross out. I thought perhaps it was some kind of FBI type crap that will change to the game but this is all I get. What the hell?
I thought perhaps I did this wrong, but if I try the game without it, I think I just get a message that says INSERT PLAYSTATION GAME.

Ore No Ryouri was like that. It won't work with boot swap nor will it work with a modded system (both have been tried). I had results with ePSXe and also I bought a japanese PS2 to play that and other games without the headache.

They've been getting crafty about circumventing our attempts to circumvent the region coding. Gatchaman: The Shooting was like this a couple of years ago, so it's by no means new.
I finally wound up contacting a buddy of mine whose military posting had him in Japan at the moment and asked him to go grab a cheap PSone for me. Now I don't even bother with the boot disks. ;)
(Before anyone asks, and anytime I mention this someone does: no, he's not still stationed there.)

Re: Gatchaman
Funny they'd put region protecting in for such a cheap game, no name game. You'd figure they'd do it for something that would sell huge in all markets.

The earliest game I heard of doing that was Final Fantasy VIII. When was Gatchaman, before or after?

Gatchaman: The Shooting is a 2002 model according to the review (http://www.thelogbook.com/pf/gatch/) on my site.
There are also some older titles, like Hyper Crazy Climber, where it's not so much a case of anti-mod/bootdisk technology as just the fact that it doesn't quite work right unless on a native system. I couldn't ever get HCC's opening cinematic to display properly until I got the JP PSone.

This sucks. Guess it's time to either return them or sell them. Bought a fukking import swap disc thingie for nothing... :(

Yeah, I find that those boot disc thingies are a waste. I picked up a used Metal Slug for the ps1 for cheap and then tracked down a swap disc and it didn't work. It took buying a modded ps1 from AdamG of the forums for it to finally work. Slug looks so much better with actual blood replacing the "sweat" that Metal Slug X got...

You can probably rip the game, patch it, and re-burn it. Check http://www.megagames.com for patches. This sort of thing is often necessary for DDR and its kin.

You would have to find it for me. I am not familiar with this site and I'm not sure what you are hinting at. I'm 90% going to sell these, I've gotten offers already.

Truthfully, I'm not that familiar with the site either. ;-) I've only needed a patch like once or twice. There should be a console patch section, then you just look for the PS1 stuff, or something like that.

If your PS1 is an early model (SPH-10001 .... I think), and it has the paralell port on the back, there are codes out there for Pro Action Replay/GameShark to circumvent Capcom's copy protection. I've used it for Dino Crisis and I used it for my import DDR Solo.

The specific PSone boot disc that I have lets me enter codes to get by the anti-piracy/mod/import games. Got it on Lik-sang. There are always ways around these type of problems.

I had to go to megagames to get a patch for guitar freaks. It kind of sucks that I can't use my original but what can you do?
Megagames is a great site for hacks, or if you lose your cd key or something for PC games.
