Hi folks,

I got a free copy of Final Fantasy XI with the Hard Disk Drive today for review purposes, and I wanted to know if anybody has an idea where I can get a PS2 cheap network adaptor. My first 30 days for FF XI are free, so I probably won't need to use it any longer than that, if anyone's wondering. Also, I have broadband, if that makes a difference...

You'll probably need to buy the official network adapter (can be found at some GS for $20) since it's the "connection" for the HDD to the system.

Finding a cheap Network Adaptor won't be nearly as hard as finding the patience to sit through the install process. I hope this isn't the start of a new console trend. If you do get FFIX, be prepared to spend several HOURS while the game installs, updates, installs and installs and never seems to end. And, yes, I do have broadband with a cable modem. On the bright side, you won't have to buy the soundtrack, since you'll never want to hear those songs again.

FFIX's multistep hoop jumping was the WORST installation process I've ever seen in any console or PC game, so be forwarned, you're in for the most excruciating gaming experience on the PS2 this year. In fact, this installation was so aggravating, the excitement I had for it has faded and I now have no interest in playing the game tonight. Hopefully, it'll be worth the effort, after the annoyance wears off.

I know this seems harsh, but Square should have done a better job in this dept, FFIX was delayed for months and the thanks we get for waiting is... more waiting?

You got the game and hard drive for free and can't afford the LAN adapter? Geez, I wish I had your problems.

Yeah the installation of FFXI is pretty maddening to put it lightly.

But a network adapter can be found for $40 or under, plus there's other online games out there if you end up not liking FFXI. I would recommend getting the official Sony model as well.

I know that the various USB ones that have been used tend to lag the games up soemthing fierce (well they did for SOCOM 1, and Madden). Just drop the green on the official one. Its a nice thing, and made for the system. Its worth the 39 new, or 20ish used.
