Microsoft cancelled several games in their XSN sports series for the next year so they could concentrate on quality. Here is the story:

I certainly hope this opens the door for EA to embrace Xbox Live.
Microsoft's titles had neat things that the competitiors didn't, much like 989 does on the PS2.
It's too bad they couldn't step it up.

I'm not sure I agree that EA will change it's position on Xbox Live just because Microsoft is no longer providing sports games for it. Their subscription service fees haven't changed.
Depends on what they wanted to accomplish with the online boycott in the first place I suppose (which, of course, I know nothing about).

I on the other hand hope it opens the door for EA as well... to cancel some of its sports games. Perhaps its time for some originality?

That's asking too much of the industry. :P

They might not be original, but I'll be damned if EA Sports isn't still consistently putting out the best sports games in the industry.

EA better make some of the better sports games, they make so damn many of them.
My point though was that it really wouldn't be such a bad idea for them to take a year off from time to time. While the EA sports games may be better then most of the other sports games on the market (except for Sega) there really isn't that much of a difference from year to year except for minor graphic and roster updates.
I hate to say it but if I'm going to buy anything "sports" it's most likely going to be from EA. Their Formula 1 games suck so bad....but they're the best Formula 1 games out there, which makes me cry. Same with Tiger Woods Golf. God awful crap with horrible "cut scenes" and a silly control scheme.....but it's the best golf game out there. Hockey too. THE worst hockey game (enough with the cutscenes every 3 minutes)....retro stuff was better, but once again it's currently the best there is.

Actually it *would* be a bad idea from their point of view. Sports games with last year's "Year" on them don't exactly sell well. Doing nothing would let the competition take market share away from them. Plus they'd have development costs without the higher revenues to offset them.
I'll take EA's incremental updates to their sports franchies any day over the progression of a series like Tomb Raider. Nobody says I have to buy a sports game every year, but when I do decide to buy a new one (for me, usually 3-4 years later) I at least know I'm getting an improvement over what I have already.
