View Full Version : Favourite "Stealth Action" Series

I've been knee deep in this genre lately. Picked up "The Twin Snakes" for GC and played it for a bit. Restarted my "Syphon Filter 2" game from awhile back and have (finally) made it more than half way through. And I've been pondering the purchase of "Pandora Tomorrow," "Omega Strain," and "Everything or Nothing" (I'll get 'em all eventually, but only one at a time :) .
So I want to know - what's your favourite series of this genre? And if which game specifically (if any). Which series do you hate (if any)? If you could make the ultimate Stealth Action game, what aspects would you take from each game?

well Splinter Cell sucks
one of the most boring games I've ever played
just (way too) much stealth....no action..... zzzzzzzzzz
I also bought MGS:TTS and I like it much better
The stealth elements are not a must...most times u can finish a stage trough running beserk too :D
Not to forget that it is very brutal. The way ninja cuts through soldiers is pretty terrifying.....I was pretty surprised that it just got a "16+" in Germany
O_O
btw: the best stealth element I've ever played was in Zelda:OoT

I also thought Splinter Cell SUCKED! Not enough action, to much stealth. I sai James Bond cause I love that series. Syphon Filter isn't a bad game either though.

syphon filter!
i've had a great time with all the games in this series and look fwd to seeing how it fares (finally) on the PS2. syphon filter works because it doesnt try and drive the player insane with stealth the way splinter cell does. your character almost always has the option of going in run and gun style and the level designs have been pretty clever. the story is pretty high grade for video game, has a nice x-files vibe and voice acting that doesnt make me cringe.
it may be the least stealthy of all the games but its the most absorbing.
now the bond games...are any of them related gamewise or has the license just been passed around a bunch? are they true sequals or just some other teams take on the bond world? seems like a new one comes out every other month.

My favorite is actually not in this poll. It's the Tenchu series.

Boktai has a lot of that stealth element too. Very well implemented for a GBA game too. And it has a sequel coming, so I guess you could consider it a series. Any game that combines the likes of Zelda, Castlevania & Metal Gear Solid can not be ignored.
I voted MGS.

If I had to pick a favorite stealth action game, it would be Sly Cooper, as it's got more action than stealth... just the way I like it.

Roger that.
When I saw the thread I thought... I wonder how many people are gonna pick TENCHU, like I am!?
I was surprised to see it was missing. The FIRST stealth game of the 3D era and no love.

My mistake - I meant to add an "Other" option when I created the poll and I totally forgot. I've now added that *and* Tenchu as an option. I have to be honest - I had *no idea* Tenchu was along the same lines. Now I have something to look for in my PS hunting :)
To answer the Bond question: I threw it in there simply because of Everything or Nothing, which I see as a very similar game to what I was thinking of (based on the Xbox demo version).
And now to finally add my two cents: I picked Splinter Cell, although Syphon Filter is a close second in my eyes. I love trying to figure out how I can complete any given level without actually killing anybody (and therefore saving Ammo). And I *really* love sneaking up on somebody and grabbing them by the neck. In Syphon Filter, when sneaking up on somebody with the taser, it just doesn't seem quite right. Half the time I'm wondering how they *possibly* couldn't see me :)
I *used* to love Metal Gear Sold and then I bought Sons of Liberty. *Way* too many freaking cut scenes for my tastes. Breaking up the action with a couple of minutes of cutscenes is a good thing (you need a break) - breaking it up while sitting there for 15-20 minutes is *not* a good thing.
So tell me about Tenchu!

Tenchu is awesome. Basically, you are a ninja, a stealth assasin (if you will). You start off in the first few levels doing things like taking out evil merchants and such (you pretty much take out an evil merchant in all 3 of the games in the beginning). After awhile, you start using less stealth, and more action, but that is because you are fighting big, crazy bosses and stuff.
If it had a sequel on the way, I would have said Manhunt, because you pretty much just use stealth to kill everybody. Maybe I am saying that because Manhunt has been (so far), the easiest stealth game I have played. All you do is walk through the level until a guy comes up on radar (or look for him from a distance to not take the chance of walk right into him), hide in the shadows, bang on something so that 1 and only 1 guy comes over to see what is going on, and kill him when he walks away. I think I pretty much just gave a full game walkthrough in a paragraph if that tells you anything.

No "Thief: The Dark Project" and series? Stealth was nothing at all until Looking Glass Studios made these classics.

My vote goes to Metal Gear Solid, though Tenchu comes in a close second. You all remind me that I haven't yet played Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins yet... >_<

I like Splinter Cell, It's my favorite. Granted I don't have a large experience with the other games, I've played a little of all of them. I dislike MGS because it's all stealthy and then at various points it turns into an action game. Splinter Cell is all stealth.

Agreed! Beat out MGS by a whole month, and Thief (PC) by two.
Glad to see it's in there now.
Well, I'm not a fan of 2 and I've yet to pick up Return from Darkness...which should be pretty awesome.

The Metal Gear Solid series is absolutely stunning! I feel that MGS2 is probably the best stealth/action game to grace a console!

Well, I think Metal Gear Solid is an obvious answer here ;D
I looooove stealth games. There's something about the sneaking and surprise that makes it so satasfying. I also am a big fan of:
Thief....one of the best
Tenchu

Splinter Cell is deffinately the stealthiest, but Pandora Tomorrow's Single Player Sucked big time.
I can't stay Stealthey in MGS, makes the game too hard. I hardly consider it a stealthe game...
But, Some of my favorite Stealthe elements are in Beyond Good and Evil. Even though they are very simple and not exactly a main part of the game... its deffinately my favorite game to sneak through.

No Edit...
Chronicles of Riddick is pretty good for stealth too, nothing like walking up behind a guard and sticking a screw driver in his neck @_@
