I really do not like these. I prefer the jewel case versions. These take up too much space IMO. Today I saw DOOM in the original Longbox version, and the jewel case "Greatest Hits" version. Needless to say, I bought the "GH" version. Anyone else try to avoid these whenever possible? I have read how many here try to avoid the "GH" versions, but what are your opinions about these?
I'm also curious as to which titles were released in Longbox versions, and of these, which titles were released in Longbox version ONLY, and which titles were released in a jewel case version ALSO, whether it is just "Greatest Hits" and/or "standard black" versions.
I own a lot of "GH" stuff because I've bought the stuff NEW, and I prefer new disc games to used disc games whenever possible. I can understand how people think they are tacky but personally I like the neon green for some reason and wish all titles had neon green side bars to them
And for the NAMCO collection, were volumes 2, 4, and 5 released only with the letters on the cover? I have 1 and 3 as "GH" titles with the segmented titles of the games on the cover instead of the letters, and I'm wondering if these are going to look odd lined up if it turns out it will be..
strange cover - A - strange cover - C - O.

I would've gone for the long box, naturally, because they are rarer as they're OOP.
(GH might be too *shrug*, but you can still find those in Best Buy and the like)

You can check my list http://people.bu.edu/cure/playstation.pdf ; it lists when longbox titles are also available in GH or standard jewel cases.
As to the 2nd question, the N and the M are indeed available in "big letter" non-GH packaging. Both the N and the M also have a print run that is not GH but uses the "screenshot" style cover that was used on the GH covers.

I dunno the long boxes are sort of neat looking I think. When I finally pick up King's Field I think I might try and find the long box version (I *think* it was a longbox game anyway... if not I might be looking awhile). Greatest hits however just bother the crap out of me. I hate the green bars, they stand out too much from the other games.

There is a list of longbox PSX titles in this thread:
http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4949&highlight=long+box
However, that thread doesn't really cover what was exclusive to the longbox version. kevincure's list seems to answer that question though.
As for longbox, I want to own a few of those games in those cases someday. But everytime I find one at EB, one of the tabs is broken so the case doesn't open and close correctly. Or it's a game that looks too awful for the price they want for it.

I also have noticed that there are cardboard longbox versions and plastic longbox versions (like the Saturn games). I don't think the plastic ones are too bad, but the cardboard ones bug me the most. (Doom - cardboard, Ridge Racer - plastic).

Yes.
Although in some parallel dimension:

This i think to a point is something that we are still trying to find out completely. I think that Dangerboy just won a MK3 in jewel case format off of ebay a few days ago, and that was something that was being listed as only Long, before. Yeah check KevinCure's list. Its where weve been dumping all our info lately.

There are actually 3 forms of longbox. One completely cardboard, one Jewel-cased Saturn type, and one that has a cardboard overlay glued to a black plastic case. Most of the plastic ones that ive seen, sure show their wear, and i dont know of any way to replace the door of them. I dont really like the cardboard glued ones, because the glue is starting to die on a few of mine, and the tops are starting to peel up, and its kinda annoying. Yes i can glue em, ive just not gotten that far yet.[/quote]

I like the Longbox versions. I bought the Longbox DOOM just because, well, I'm a collector.
I have a few of each of the different types of Longboxes. My faves are also the plastic ones. Like the Saturn and Sega CD. Too bad they aren't all that way. Also, too bad I haven't seen a Longbox in the wild in months. Not since I bought all the ones the EB had.
My Resident Evil is peeling something fierce. LOL

as I'm not really a psx collector, I too like the jewel cases just for space reasons. However I've yet to see the peeling mentioned above to when I see longcase cardboard/plastic hybrids (which tend to remain sturdier longer) I pick them up. I have two of these, Darkstalkers and Battle Arena Toshinden 2. Ironically they're both up for trade since I don't have the room :(
