Another fun-packed April Fools' Day. As you read this, all of yesterday's chaos should be restored, as it was after the Chop Socky Invasion of April 1, 2003 and the Lee Furie clone attack of April 1, 2002. Back to our usual ways.

As some of you noted, yesterday was more of a homage to the date, the hijinx that IS April Fools' Day, than it was a deceptive prank, and this year we created an environment that everyone could interact with as opposed to mods running amok.

As a forum, you scored REMARKABLY WELL. It was really a kick seeing some of you step back in time and either re-live a memory of youth or just take a moment to experience it. Our forum is a community, and as a community I'd have to say that like any good block party, having everyone join in makes the whole experience that much more fun.

Bonus points to those of you who actually revived old "alter egos" for yesterday as well. Playing 1983 was enough for me, playing it with Iron Monkey would have made my head explode. Kudos to those of you who could juggle two scenarios at once like that!

And to those of you, let's say "forum Grinches", who not only didn't participate but also either derailed threads with your "reality" or outright shared your dissatisfaction with the day's events - you really need to lighten up, or stay the hell away from here on April 1st from now on. If 99% of the community is getting into it and you're not, just walk away. It's only 24 hours.

Again, thanks to everyone who played along, it was just as much fun for the mod team here watching your posts and replies as it was for us dreaming the stuff up!

I had not considered bringing Hiroshi back for this. When I saw that Kaine had posted as Stanley, I thought it would be fun to jab at him a bit, much like we did during the contest.

Then I realized that in 1983 Hiroshi would have started drumming up support for the Famicom in the US, hence the post in Cmos' NES thread. I wish I could have been around to do more, but pressing matters kept me from the computer all evening.

A good time, it was. I'm almost afraid to see what's going to happen next year. :)

It was definitely a fun day. I'm glad that mostly everyone embraced the idea and played along.

That was a lot of fun, wasn't it? That's the kind of April's Fool I like: Harmless in spirit, high in fun.

And I swear that you'll never see me post that I find Michael Jackson cute. Nah-uh. (unless we have another early 80s extravaganza, that is...)

My Corey Hart avatar will stay till the end of the day today, as I'm not in a position to change it now.

It was quite neat to be part of this for the first time... I had brought out my alter ego as well in one thread but when my browser glitched and kept me as "AdamG" I wasn't pleased to see a RM#8 line with my name. Whoops...

I wanted to partake in more threads but my memory is somewhat limited. I was but a young lad of 1 then.

Oh man, yesterday was like....SOOOO much gnarly fun!

LOL

No, really, It was excellent. I was hoping to see more of it, maybe some different years but oh well. Being back to normal kinda sucks. Anyways, being that it was my first April Fools here I don't know a lot of the normal "routine" like that Stanley was really Kaine or that Oobgarm was Hiroshi. Plus I missed out on the Lee Furie and Chop Socky of the other years. I still don't know what this "Iron Monkey" is. :(

All in all, it was great, thanks a lot Joe. And a big :P to all the April Fools day humbugs. :D

That was part of last fall's "Alter Ego" contest. It was similar in style to yesterday's shenanigans, only DPers picked a game-related character to be, and told no one who they were until the contest ended.

That was great, I hope to see another contest like that sometime in the future.

Me neither. The premise was just ripe for exploitation. It was successful as a parody of 1983 and of forum conventions.

Of course, since I was 12 in 1983, I'm sure I appreciated it much more than some of these youngin's.

Yep, that was quite a bit of fun...I only wish I had been able to participate earlier in the day (stupid job). And to those who did not enjoy it, get over yourselves. Now. I'll wait...

Good.

I love April Fools Day, I look forward to it probably more than Christmas anymore...so yesterday was quite good :)

And oh yeah, the avatar, and the custom status will change...but the sig is staying >:)

I think it was just the fact it was done on April Fool's Day that annoyed me. If we had done it on a more normal day, I would have joined in. It did'nt help I don't recall anything from back then either. 1993, that's a WHOLE different story. :D

But yeah, I did'nt know about this before hand, and I'll just stay away next year so as not to ruin anyone else's fun.

I missed the Alter Ego contest also -- THAT'S one I'd LOVE to try in. LOL

I thought it was hilarious going into all the threads and seeing cmosfm and a few others running amok. I did post a little, but i think that being 3 at the time (if this was 83) kept me out of the massive running of hilarity, because i simply didnt remember all that much from back then.
That was fun, we should do it again. LOL

me? amok? lol.

Anyways, being only 3 in 1983 shouldn't have stopped you from having fun! I was BORN in 1983...I'm just a lover of the 80's lifestyle, music, trends, etc. I wish it was always the 80's...much better than the 90's and today! :P

I think I'll cut on the old record player this evening and chill out to some Air Supply, Styx and even some smooooooth Barry Manilow.

Not to be a urine soaked wet blanket, but that was pretty weak.

I mean, c'mon, any GOOD april fools joke requires effort, and this one seemed like it was thought up at about 11:30PM March 31st. Really, how hard would it have been to make the site monochrome green, or change the banners to read "radical press" or "VGAMES_BBS"?

- my 1/2 peso.

I didn't even know what was going on (there were no obvious signs about it for us "view posts since last visit" kind of guys.. at least I didn't see any).

But with the date and the flood of posts that obviously had that theme of being back in 1983... it didn't take a lot of thought to figure it out :P

You know A- is unacceptable! Even regular A's we're not so crazy about. LOL

Kidding, we did super-nice, fellas. That was the most fun posting on here I've had in ages. Compliments I shall give now, hmm? :hail:

Guess I gotta re-alter my avatar, though... yet AGAIN... *grumble, whine* :P

Normally I am a quiet defender of your posts as they make me laugh, even when most don't see the humor.

But just this one time, let me tip-toe back again briefly to the 80's during the time of "Happy Days" and tell you that you can just go and

SIT ON IT!!!!!!

Lighten up, Francis!

(yup, that's as bad of an outburst as you'll usually get from me, but I feel better for saying it just the same... )

Glad most everyone else had as good of a time as I did! I had a blast and I wish I had been the one who had thought of it! Thanks for playing along! :D

I liked it. Yesterday is probably going to be one of the most memorable April Fools days I've ever had, because of DP.

Like I said, I was born in 1982 so I missed out on that era. It was fun being a gamer in 1983, and talking about what happened or was going to happen back then. Especially since the internet wasn't this prominent back then, it gave me a good idea of what it might have been like.

Kudos to the person who thought this up. :)

Unfortunately I didn't visit the forum yesterday while 1983 was in effect, so it looks like I missed out.

But I DID...

...hear "Love is a Battlefield" on the radio in the morning, and proceed to have it stuck in my head all day...

...watch a rerun of The A-Team on cable...

...shop for some back issues of the UK magazine Tiger Comic from 1982 and '83...

...download and watch two Atari commercials from the early '80s...

...and spend most of the afternoon looking at Odyssey2 stuff (for my web site).

I guess in my world, it's always 1983 (give or take a year or so).

Since a few of you asked, it was our own Queen of the Felines who dreamed this one up, and we naturally and instantly fell in love with the idea. There was ONE major piece of the day that was missing though - Kris got the idea because a forum glitch had turned one of our pasts' dates back to 1969. When she saw that it triggered the "what if it were 1983 on the forum".

Unfortunately I came to know later by our administrator that turning a server clock wreaks absolute chaos on just about everything from logs to your experience here (consider that many forum functions are based on "what's new" or who's online in the pazt x-timeframe). So we had to scrap that bit and go with our imagination.

Again, thanks to everyone with a sense of fun and mischief who played along.

I do have a question.

Why 1983?

It has been confusing me as to why that particular date was chosen, I'd think if 1984 was chosen it would make more sense because it was exactly 20 years ago. I dunno, it's just been confusing me here. x_x
