I've been collecting for a while now, and with over 25 consoles, 625 games, and 100 controllers, I like to think I've seen a lot of stuff, but today I got something I've never seen before. My "boss"/friend's uncle gave him some Playstation games to give to his young kids. With some of the ratings he feels that these games are too mature or difficult for his children, he is going to give them to me. While I admit I never really got into the original Playstation, I was loyal to Sega with the Saturn and Dreamcast, I have one now and am only accustom to games coming in the standard cd jewel case and the large plastic cd cases (like those used for Sega CD and Sega Saturn). The games my friend has for me come in cardboard, flip open, similar to a book, style boxes. I was just wondering if anyone knows how long these were made, and if anyone knows how many games were packaged like this. Also, the one game that I got so far, Wipeout, has a paper slide cover that wraps around the box. Do all of these have this. I appreciate any info you guys can provide. Thanks

They weren't in use very long. They were transitional packaging between the SegaCD style cases and the hard plastic longboxes Sony used for a limited time. The cardboard packaging was used for a mere couple of months, if even that.

Well Wipeout was the only PSOne title that had a slipcover. The original release wasnt selling well, so they changed the cover and used the slip case for a time until they had sold through the older cover, and could use the slipcover as the new version. Weve got a thread about this in the collecting forum.. that at least tells all the longboxes, http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=29752
though ive yet to see a list that states the different long box cases themselves, though i dont think that there were any that did mutiple long boxes.

Slip cover? Picture? I assume it's different from the other three case designs?

Descent has the cardboard style box for sure, there are quite a few more in addition to that and Wipeout. As far as we know, the slip cover is only for wipeout (the rumor I've heard is that the original techno design wasn't selling well in the US, hence the cover change).

There are pictures floating around here somewhere, but i cant remember which thread they are in... I was trying to go through my old posts to see if any rang a bell, but 5 pages in, i wasnt seeing anything. Maybe Kevincure or Dangerboy remember? Queen, do you remember where they are?

There's a pic of Wipeout in the "Playstation Rarity List" thread, but damned if I know offhand which page it's on. ;)

Jasoco: Its on the top of page 3 of the Playstation Rarity thread, but the second pic, the one with the slip cover is now a dead image.

Queen: i must have gone through that thread like 3 or 4 times last night, and couldnt find it, man am I blind. X_x

Cmosfm: @ 5 a piece thats not a bad price for em, but dont get em unless you want to... that 10 could go to another game that you might want more than some longbox PSOne titles.

Here's a page that includes a rather small pic of the slipcover (I think), as well as info on a ton of other PSX box variations. It's an interesting read.

I just checked through my PS collection, and 6 of them are in cardboard longboxes:

Wipeout (with slipcover)
Destruction Derby
Loaded
Doom
Twisted Metal
Wing Commander III

Two PS games by Acclaim I have are in the clear plastic style long boxes used on Sega CD games:

Bust-A-Move 2 Arcade Edition

Hope this helps,

Wow...how's that for coming full circle? :D

For easier reference, here's a pic of all 3 long box variations including Wipeout with it's slip over:
http://www.game-rave.com/umi/pscases.jpg

Has kevin, Kristine, or DP ever kept track of which games are in which case? I have all but about 15 Long box games. I'd be happy to list them, since I know Papastu / Kevin know of at least one variant with Warhawk coming in two different style long box cases, as well as Wipeout's cover swap. WOuld be interesting to see what insanity will emerge as more variants arrive. LOL

While we're on the subject, I have to admit that Sony keeping the 'thread' on the flat cardboard and jewel case transitions was one of the coolest little conformity tricks I've seen. And now that I think about it, I need to find those few JC games that are missing the thread graphic...

Jason, your having WAY to much fun withyour Unicron. LOL

Ive allways wondered about the whole longbox cover variant issue, and even more of the long boxed titles that were also jewelcased, which ones are rarer. Ive never really stumbled into all that many longboxed titles out in the wild, and the ones i do find tend to be trashed.

There arnt all that many games that are missing that thread are there? I know Aladdin doesnt have it, and a few others that arnt coming to mind at this exact moment. But is it more than a dozen??? and even more so, did they release a "fix" to add the stripe thing back in?

The few longbox games I own are already noted here. Since we're masochists, we might as well go ahead and try and list them. After Dangerboy and a few others post, I'll see what I can dig up from ebay photos and the like.

Btw, Queen, I have all the raw data from my list if that's more helpful that simply a pdf for the DP list, so let me know if you want that forwarded over.

I'm keeping track of the variations listed in this thread - for those that noted only 'cardboard' near the start of the thread, if you happen to see this please reupdate noting whether the cardboard is ridged or flat.

QoF - I'll toss this data into the list and forward the data over to you soon.

8 More? GO GO GO!

Okay, remind me never to open my mouth again....using GWH's list as a check off, I found variants...as well as an interesting useless FYI.

First the variants:
Twisted Metal - Flat/Ridged
Warhawk - Ridged/Clear Case
MLB Bottom of the 9th - Ridge / Flat
Extreme Pinball - Ridge / Flat
NFL Game Day - Flat/Ridged

From his unknown
Bust a Move 2 - Clear
Gunship - Ridged
NBA Jam TE - CLear
Street Fighter Alpha - Flat
Street Fighter The Movie: Clear

Other
Ridge Racer - Clear, Long Box "Not For Resale" Version

[b]Useless FYI{/b]
The above ridge racer variant has no SLUS number on its disc.

Masochist collectors...does that mean with SOny tossed in we get the S + M? :)
