View Full Version : Datel Advance Game Port vs GB Player

With my new GameCube on the horizon, I'd like to grab one of the GBA-on-TV-through-GC units. Of course, there's the Gameboy Player that's apparently very good *and* 50 lousy bucks. Then there's this Advance Game Port thing by Datel that's only $25-$30. For those who haven't seen it, it plugs into a memory slot, looks like a clamshell, and apparently only plays GBA games. I've read some nasty reviews about it, including those stating that some GBA games weren't even compatible with it.

So, who's got the dirt on this one? I'd rather not spend 50 bucks on the Gameboy Player, but I also want to avoid dropping $25 on a piece of crap.

IMO this gadget is a total waste of money. My friend bought one of these things and I was excited to check it out. Neither of us had a GBA at the time but we had stocked up on a few games for it.

The biggest problem I saw was that the games all experience a drop in frame rate for some reason. We tried Doom and Monkey Ball Jr. and the games were practically unplayable. For a moment I thought that's how they played. When I got my GBA SP they played perfectly smooth. No stuttering of frame rate. We also experienced problems with audio. Some games played with no sound! No music and no sound effects. Not sure if my friend ended up with a defective product or that's how it works. ? I tried checking reviews for it but most people who've reviewed it either haven't played it or all they say is that it sucks. They give no reasons why they feel that way.

Plus you can't play any of the older GB or GB Color games. Believe me I tried! Tetris, Killer Instinct, Montezuma's Return... none of them worked.

I'll gladly fork over 50 bucks for the Nintendo Game Boy Player instead of this Datel junk.

Thank you Search function. I love you. Seriously. You have saved me once again.

I was going to buying the Datel Advance Game Port for my niece this weekend. I had it in my hand and was standing in line when I decided that I had better check online first and see what the good folks at Digital Press had to say about it. Whew, that was too close :D

Wow.. damn.. I was this close to killing this thread. It was dead and buried on page 100 or so when BOOM! Along comes BunniBear and brings it back to life. ;)

We saved another one. Are you going to get a GameBoy Player instead?

I will definitely be picking up Nintendo's Gameboy Player. I should know by now that first-party products are the way to go.

The Datel Advance Port is going for $8 new at EB right now, if you can find one.
