do you think they will release a redesigned PS2 as the PS3 approaches. They did this with the PSOne and of course older systems like the NES, SNES, Genesis all got make overs as they ended their era. In my opinion the PS2 is one of the ugliest systems of all time and could really use a new design. When do you think sony will do something like this?

Seems like it's only a matter of time. I look forward to the new design... the old PS2 looks like it was taken straight out of the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I agree with you, the PS2 is one ugly machine. But I don't know about a redesign, at least not for another 2 years or so. But like you said, they did do that with the PS1, so it's possible.

And welcome to the forums, classicb!

Maybe Sony will make a miniature PS2 similar to the PS1. Anything would probably look better than the current design.

ya it will be nice when they make a redo on the ps 2 but as they always seem to do they make it crappier the ps1 was simplistic and easy to repair if need be. the ps2 has extra stuff which i dont care for (ie: the auto open cd drawer ) simple is better. also the ps2 takes too long to load up fron the start.

It's not that ugly... not the prettiest system either.. but I'd be happy if they just redid the power switch. I don't think any console needs two. Also they'd better not mess with the power cord, I love my little PS1 but the switch to the huge adaptor was a complete pain in the ass.

The main way they were able to shrink the PSX into the PSone was by removing all form of heat sink and fans, and removing the AC adapter from the machine (same way they did to the Gamecube).

i saw on sprong somewhere, where someone from sony said that they were probably gonna do the same to the ps2 as they did to the ps1 to make the ps one.. and he said that it wouldnt change the specs of the ps2, just make its appearance different

I think they could redesign the PS2 and add two important features to it, to really extend the life of the console.

Make it really easy for all the newest PS2 games to have in game Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and 480P progressive scan display.

It's something that they could do in hardware, that wouldn't have any REAL negative effect in terms of these new games not being able to use those two features in the old style PS2's.

Sure if you have a old school PS2, then you don't get in game Dolby Digital 5.1, and you don't get automatic 480P standard progressive scan support, but then you never had that before anyways, so you wouldn't know the difference. And for the people that get the re-designed PS2's, they would benefit from the Dolby Digital and the 480P standard.

Also, it's not something that would affect the development of the software. All the software could be coded to work absolutely fine on both PS2's. It's just on the new and improved one it will have the 5.1 in game Dolby Digital and the 480P, and on the old one it will be just like it was before.

Yep, it was announced about a week or so ago. No specifications yet, but I'd bet anything it will be out for the holidays (Imagine a $100 price point on re-designed PS2's for xmas.....)

There will of course be some functionality taken out. I think almost anyone will agree that losing dvd playing capabilities along with the firewire, and USB ports, progressive scan and infrared (in the newer models) would lower thr price point significantly, and component prices have obviously dropped in the past 3-4 years.

The big question would be, will/how do they keep the compatiblility of hard drives, eye toy, and modems.....

the ability to read dvd's isnt something extra that they threw in ... the ps2 reads dvd's because sony uses the DVD type discs so in order to play PS2 games, it has to be able to read dvd's... if the usb ports were taken out, that would make the only gameplay of several games not that fun.. i'm not sure what they're gonna do regarding the Network adapter and the hard drive.

I am waiting for them to re-design it. Not that I don't like the current design, but, I want something that is gonna last. There are some Ps2 games I really want to pick up and enjoy.

how about 4 controller ports?

come on Sony it's not that hard.

Well, taking out the ability to play DVD movies would make it a little cheaper to manufacture because they wouldn't have to pay royalties to the DVD Group for each unit they make. Sony itself is a member of that group, but still...
