View Full Version : What's the 1st Game You Fell to Your Death In?

Gaming deaths that come from falling are the worst. Falling takes no energy, yet it in many cases it just takes away your life altogether. In plenty of games, there's always a pit to fall into or a building drop from. The result is usually death.

Playing Lost Levels on Super Mario All Stars, I've missed the ground quite a few times. As very strong winds begin to blow, I jump on a springboard, hang in the air for ten seconds, and land on... nothing! There's no telling how many times I've guided Mario into large, seemingly bottomless pits. @_@

It takes me back to the days of Pitfall when I'd fall from a vine into a tar-pit. That was the first time in my gaming history that I fell to my death.

What's the first game you ever played where you became a victim of gravity?

What game has claimed the most of your lives due to falling?

Super Mario bros was the first video game I ever played. I was like 2 at the time so I definately fell into many pits then. I played the mario games way more then any other games. There are so many pits in those games so I definately fell down the most pits in them. Im not sure exactly which one but smb1-3 and world.

Super Mario Bros. was the first game I had played that had a pit to fall in. So it'd be SMB.

Unless you count the pits in Video Pinball on the 2600.. Which I don't.

SMB for me. This brings up a question: what was the first video game to feature bottomless pits? I'm talking about the kind of pit that goes to the bottom of the TV screen so when you fall in them it's like you are falling out of the picture on the TV when you die? What games featured this before SMB?

A tricky one that, but I think it was probably ...

Hunchback

On the BBC Micro.

Can't find a picture ... but I will tell you, there is probably not a game more irritating than this one!! Frustration rules over all!! What with arrows, pits, cannoballs, guards will spears, swinging ropes .. and nothing to assist you whatsoever. And one mistake and it is all over! I never did get to the end of that game. It just got impossible far too soon.

In anycase...I probably first fell to my death in Super Mario Bros. Never played Pitfall.

Most likely it was Pitfall (2600) or Donkey Kong Jr (Coleco)...either way it was the beginning to a very long trend.

Super Mario Bros. for me too. I was so excited when I first beat 1-1... I kept falling down that pit in the middle that you have to run and jump to get over. I couldn't get the hang of holding down the run button while I jumped, and I wasn't clever enough at that age to realize I could go over the bricks above. :/

I couldn't get the hang of holding down the run button while I jumped, and I wasn't clever enough at that age to realize I could go over the bricks above. :/

That was how my spent my first hour with my Nintendo! (Well, after the 5 minutes it took for my friend to hook it up). I was 6 at the time and had little gaming experience. I did figure out how to go over the bricks, but then one of the last 2 pits in the level would do me in, causing me to go back to that second pit, and spend the rest of my lives jumping and dying until I could start a new game. My friend came back about an hour after he hooked it up (I lived in an apartment complex at the time and he lived a few apartments away from me and had to go home for a while after hooking it up) and taught me how to run and jump. From then on, I was set. Well, after learning how to run and duck those bricks in 1-2, anyways.

And then, a few days later, my friend told me about the pipe shortcut in 1-1! If only I knew... I could have avoided the pits altogether! LOL
