What would you guys think if a company like MS or Sony gave their consoles away free if you signed a contract to buy a specific amount of games in a period of time? Sort of like music club only with vdeogames. Would you commit to buying say 10-12 games in say a 3-4 year period? Do you think a company would ever try something like this?

Sure, I would go for that in a minute. I know I would buy that amount of games with no problem.

No, I buy almost all my games used at a fraction of their original cost.

would be a cool thing if it wasn't like music clubs where they keep sending you nonsense to buy more of their stuff.

Yeah, I have a feeling I'd do it. That's at most only 4 games per year, and, although I usually don't buy even that many, it would be an excellent excuse to do so. Furthermore, the money I'd save on buying the console could be put towards between 4 - 6 of those twelve games (the way console/game prices are these days). So, yeah, I'm certian I'd do it. Sounds like a good deal to me.

BTW, did you guys know that Columbia House used to have a videogame club division in the early 80s?

I'd definitely do that, but I don't think that any company would ever offer it. It costs too much to make the system. Plus they're sellin pretty darn good at $200 a pop right now.

As long as the games were decent and not throw-away crap titles the companies were trying to pawn off on unsuspecting customers, then sure.

I figure it's the people who buy a console and then only buy 1-3 games or only buy used games that hurt the console makers the most. With a club type purchase companies are guaranteed that you'll buy at least a certain amount of games.

It's definitely an interesting idea. A good way for the companies to increase their installed base.

I don't know if I'd do it. The music club's CDs used to have different markings on them, and as a collector that always bothered me. So I'd probably stay away from the VG club until I assured myself there was no difference between their games and the stuff I get in stores.

I don't know enough about how the music/DVD/book clubs work to know if something like this is feasible or not. I think the aforementioned clubs publish the stuff themselves (with permission of course). Hard to say whether the vg companies would ever let that happen.
