GamesIndustryBiz (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?section_name=dev&aid=3242) has an interesting story:

"Canadian developer Digital Extremes has released a trailer for its science fiction shooter title Dark Sector, and claimed last Friday that the footage is neither CG nor pre-rendered in any way and actually represents the fruits of its labours on a next-generation console.

Or rather, the fruits of its labours on what we expect to see in next-generation consoles - Dark Sector was not developed using PS3 or Xbox 2 development kits, but instead uses components based on the potential specs for both consoles."

You can see the trailer at the site:

I guess it looks good.. or at least has the potential for pretty graphics. :-P

I have a feeling this new generation of consoles is gonna have a lackluster "more of the same" attitude surrounding it. True, those graphics are pretty, but they're not mindblowing like console releases of the past. It just seems as if video game graphics have hit a wall. There's little room for improvement anymore.

I just hope the games contain new innovative gaming concepts and have super play control. Otherwise, I may have little to do with the next generation. You can only push graphics so far... and I think they've been pushed right to the edge of realism. No longer is it exciting to think "What'll they think of next?!" because we already know what they thought of next. It's too predictable.

That's a good point you have there.

I don't expect that we'll see something like a PSX-Dreamcast kind of jump, the kind that knocks you on your ass with the major improvement. Give me real-time playable Square CG-like graphics, and THAT will be a true next-gen machine.

Meh. This trailer seems like an Xbox game to me. Too much lighting, like Splinter Cell.

I'm hoping that physics and AI will take a giant leap forward with this next generation.

....not bloody likely......

The major graphics shift next generation will not be more realism (though the EA's and the Konami's will put out some damn beautiful titles) but "artistic" graphics. We saw this start with games like Vib Ribbon and Fear Effect on the PSX and the number of games using cel-shading of some other unorthodox graphic method (Viewtiful Joe, Megaman Network, Jet Grind Radio, etc.) will only grow because smaller developers simply don't have the artistic talent to produce realistic graphics that can compete with the majors. I think you'll be surprised by the quality of graphics in the next gen, though not in the way you guys think.

But is there really going to be anything NEW about it? Anything remotely different, beyond somewhat better graphics and sound? Really- anything that really says "abandon the current generation; there's good reason?"

Yeah more nice looking graphics that way we don't have to worry about game play!!!!!!

Make a good game thats all that matters. I don't care how good it looks or doesnt look as long as the game is good.
