I just got this in the mail and before reading it all was going to change my password just to be safe. (through my ebay not the e-mail) but then I noticed the part at the bottom where they threatened to suspend my account if I don't click their link. Whatever. Can you say Scam?

Dear eBay member, We recently noticed one or more attempts to log in to your eBay account from a foreign IP address and we have reasons to believe that your account was used by a third party without your authorization. If you recently accessed your account while traveling, the unusual login attempts may have been initiated by you.
The login attempt was made from:
IP address: 68.226.166.171
ISP Host: cdm-68-226-166-171.lkch.cox-internet.com

By now, we used many techniques to verify the accuracy of the information our users provide us when they register on the Site. However, because user verification on the Internet is difficult, eBay cannot and does not confirm each user's purported identity. Thus, we have established an offline verification system o help you evaluate with who you are dealing with. The system is called ebay PowerSafe and it's the most secure eBay wallet so far.

If you are the rightful holder of the account, click on the link below, fill the form and then submit as we will verify your identity and register you to ebay PowerSafe.

To make eBay.com the most secure site to place or bid on your auctions, every user will be registered to PowerSafe.

If you choose to ignore our request, you leave us no choice but to temporally suspend your account.

* Please do not respond to this e-mail as your reply will not be received.

Regards, eBay Inc.

If you are ever curious as to whether it is a scam or not (some of those look very real), do what I now do: wait 1 week, and then click on the link. 99% of the time, the link will be dead.
Either that, or right click on the link and look at the properties. Everytime I catch a scam, the link will start with some ip number, followed by the rest that appears to be what eBay uses. What they do is just hide the ip number from you when you click on the link so that you think it is eBay.

Sometimes the scam is so obivous, that you wonder why they even try. I usuallu only buy things off eBay like once a month, and I will get an e-mail (I will get it around the 2 or 3 week period that I am not logged into eBay) that says that I tried to use eBay, and that I gave them a bad account, and that I need to regive them my username, password, credit card #, and pin #. When I gave eBay my cc #, they never asked for a pin, so it was easy to see that this was a scam, and the fact that they claimed I was bidding on crap, and I can just log into eBay and see what I have been bidding on regardless of whether I am the highest bidder or not.

p.s. - I actually got taken in by one of these scams. I was dumb enough to not check the link (by right clicking on it), and it appeared to be a page done by eBay, and the url even looked like eBay's. It was a big hassle to end my cc and get a new one.

I clicked on the link and it asks you for your username and password!! It's scary to think how many people actually fill out the blanks!!! I have filled it out at least 50 times with completely bogus info. The email originates from somewhere in Amsterdam!! SCAM SCAM SCAM

Is it really necessary for a different thread about this every time a new eBay spam does the rounds? If I posted every time I got one of these, there would be little else in the eBay Insanity forum.

Why not keep them all in the same thread (if it needs posting at all)?

That's funny. I used to do the same thing with "go fuck yourself" in every field. My email was gofuckyourself @gofuckyourself.gov.

I've been lucky as of late. I haven't received one of these since November.

Count yourself lucky. My spam filter catches about 50 spam and virus emails a day!

temporally

They're going to suspend your account temporally? How's that, by head-butting? *lol* I love the typos in these emails.

I used to be the same, I'd hear of all these scam emails and I'd think I never get these and well eventually I started receving loads of them. Watch out you'll get them one day.
