I thought I remembered hearing something about this game being difficult to locate.
So, I've been serching the entire city of Austin for the last two weeks trying to even SEE a copy (new or used.)
Nothing.
That was, until this Sunday.
Again, let me say that I have only SEEN ONE COPY in my city - period!
I found a brand new one at a Fry's Electronics for $39.99.
Last one.
I'm not sure who said it was hard to find (although I think it was Portnoyd), but I have to totally agree.
Good luck with this one.

Wow, cool! I have one that I haven't even opened yet. It looked interesting, I didn't realize it was hard to find.
Must be instinct :)
[EDIT]
Hmmm.... I just checked Gamestop online and they have them.
http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=280902
So does Amazon.com.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000CG8F9/qid=1081434491/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl63/102-7877755-1556951?v=glance&s=videogames&n=507846
So are they REALLY rare? Should I be picking up another one? Was there a low print run of it or something? Just curious now where that info came from.

I heard there was only 35,000 made by NEC for the US distribution. The game was released back in Dec 03, it got an 8 in the Game Informer Mag. I believe it will be the next Disgaea (which I have still unopened) or Suikoden II. I stumbled upon 4 new copies of Culdcept in my local EB. They were all new but prices 19.99 (used) so I got all four of them for 17.00 each with the discount.
I am keeping 2 (one to play and one for later). I sold one for 40.00 on ebay already.
I have a hunch this one is a keeper.

you'll get my copy when you pry it from my cold dead hands. I recommend getting two copies, a play and a collector one. If you want to know how the game itself is... *cough points at sig cough* :-D

I know at least 5 places that had this...mostly gamestops. although I've seen if many places, I'm suspecting though that they only have 1 or 2 copies a piece.

Yap, this one is a toughie to get. The low print run mixed with the recent troubles for NEC and the fact that the game is just weird (thats a good thing), this one is going to be one of the few true PS2 rarities just like Rez.
Ive only seen 2 copies, 1 new and 1 used, both at the same store. I got the used, and i left the new for my friend who works at that game store, cause he likes the card type games.

If I'm not mistaken, I think Capcom handled the distribution of this one (I know NEC published it)? I could have sworn it was linked from their newsletter that I get every month or so. Either way, I haven't seen them anywhere but my local game shop, but anyone looking for Disgaea would do well to check Circuit City, as mine still has two copies left and I imagine what one gets, most of the others do too.

I would think that this game is hard to find because when it was first released none of the game stores around me had a clue. a few weeks after release a couple shops knew about it but i only found one that are it, now its all mine.
even if this isn't a future rarity, i suggest that everyone pick up a copy if they lik monopoply and any card game like magic: the gathering.

I'm downloading the Saturn version from IRC even as we speak. I'll get the Dreamcast game from Suprnova.org the moment they offer it there (although as of this writing I have not yet seen it there).
I desperately want to play Culdcept, if only to spite the losers at X Play who couldn't stop bitching about its supposedly "crappy" graphics. Yeah, whatever dudes. I've seen the fantastic, beautifully detailed artwork on the cards. I could only dream of the day when MY artwork was that "crappy".

Yeah, this looks like a game I gotta pick up soon, or I'll be hating myself later. I also saw that Xplay review, and I love 2D graphics, so I was insulted. But they also said Disgaea had crappy graphics, but It has some of the most detailed and well animated sprites I've ever seen, and I love that game!

I don't know how rare it is, but EB has several copies for $19 used at 4 different locations. It is still listed as $39 new.
Great game. It starts out easy, but once the multi-player battles start it gets alot harder.

$34.26 US @ DVDSoon.com (http://www.dvdsoon.com/show-title-details.xml?uid=104577)
$36.53 US @ DVDBoxOffice.com (http://www.dvdboxoffice.com/?description.asp?z=1&qs=1&class=gme&src=dvdpricesearch&pid=90047284)
Both of these sites are based in Canada, but offer free shipping to the US. The prices on the site are listed in Canadian currency. I've purchased DVDs from both sites and received my discs trouble-free.

I heard it had a low run. Only thing I based my judgement off of, that, and it's kinda niche.

I've honestly seen this game in almost every Gamestop I've gone to the last month or two. I would have thought uncommon at the most. Maybe its a regional thing. I never picket it up because I'm not into "card" games but maybe I'll pick one up for the hell of it.

The game is 80% Monopoly with the remaining
20% being card based. When you land on a
square owned by the other player you can go
to a card battle. If you lose you pay (rent) Magic
Points and you may also lose that card. If you win,
you get the property. Wrap this all up in a Fantasy
D&D setting and you get Culdcept.

Sounds like a fun game. I'm not too into card based games, but with the added monopoly like twist I might have to give it a try.

I just downloaded and played the Saturn version of Culdcept last night. It's an interesting game... there's so much of both Monopoly and Magic: The Gathering in it that I'm surprised Hasbro didn't sue the developers. Also, it's odd that the graphics on the Saturn version so closely mirror those used in the Playstation 2 game. The characters, monsters, and playfield all look very similar, judging from the footage I've seen.
One thing that drives me fruit loopy about the game is that it always seems like the computer opponent is getting better cards than I am... while I'm stuck with giant ants and immobile rocks, he gets speedy sprites and powerful demons. He also winds up with a lot more action cards than I ever get, resulting in my losing a lot of card battles.
Despite all that, it is a fairly diverting game, and I'm sure I'll enjoy it more once I get the hang of the play mechanics and find some way to decipher all that Japanese.

One can see this like a Madden-like series in Japan. It's been on every platform since the Saturn, and it's always pretty much just been adding cards and maps each time. Not that I'm complaining, I think it's a great series... and really quite fun if you can get some friends involved at the same time, each developing your own decks, and allowing you to improve your decks by trading.
It is similar to Magic, using the elements instead of colors. And, really Monopoly is such a simple board game, that I doubt that you can't pick many games afterwards that didn't at least borrow some of its elements. Anyway, Culdcept takes a bit of both, and merges them together well.
Your deck will get better and better as you get more (and rarer) cards. But, the demons although stronger, will also cost more mana to place on the board. Of course, like Magic, choosing which cards to put into your deck is an important part of the game.

I actually picked a used one up today at EB for $17.99 less 10% discount using the EB card. Funny thing is, the game was in mint, like new condition. The shrinkwrap was gone, but the sony seal was still on top of the dvd case. I asked the clerk how many more they had and he said 4, and they were all like that, and they came from corporate, not as trade-ins. Strange. I am thinking of going back up there and picking up the rest to sell on ebay.
So, if you guys are near an EB, I'd check them out.
Now, if I can only find Disagea.....

Curiously enough, there is a SEQUEL on the Dreamcast, of all places. This leads me to believe that the Saturn version and the PS2 version are identical (unless they renamed the Dreamcast sequel back to Culdcept - a practice I had hoped would go away after the Final Fantasy numbering debacles).
So does anyone have more info on this? Is the Saturn import the same as the PS2 game, is the Dreamcast import the same? Neither? A real Culdcept expert needs to come forward, I hunger for information!

Here's how I thought the series went:
Culdcept (Saturn) - Original release.. something like 300 cards
Culdcept Expansion (PS) - Sequel to the Saturn game (about 400 cards, new story)
Culdcept Expansion Plus (PS) - An expansion disc for the PS version. New maps, and even a map editor
Culdcept Second (DC) - Another new story, including optional paths in the story line, new maps, online play and now over 450 cards.
Culdcept Second Expansion / Culdcept (PS2) - Basically a port of the DC one with more cards, and some new features like the medals, etc.
I've never played the Saturn one... couldn't find it in Japan, but I've played all of the others, although quite a while ago now for the PS version.

The owner of the indy shop I frequent has a book on Culdecept from Japan. In the book is the card art from ALL of the games(expansions). Its hardbound and is very cool. No real words or anything just the pictures. If someones a real bg fan its worth hunting down, though i'm sure that its not cheap.

Wait a minute, Culdcept is distributed by NEC, and it's on a Sega game system?!

In US, published by NEC, distributed by Capcom, for US PS2.
I've just ordered one copy from Capcom along with another game so I get free shipping, however, quick ?? over PS2 disc as I've noticed some are buying more than 1, if you lay the system flat (horizontally), will the player scratch the disc? I know I'd not put the unit vertically.
