I've been piqued by this series a while now... a bit ticked when I got home to find a complete copy is a R4/$15 (I paid $25, but admittedly it's sealed minty fresh new). Persona 2 seems to be quite a bit higher...

My question is this: Is this a great game? I don't mind overpaying a bit if I'm going to love the game, but if it's out there for the Atlas fanboys I may just pawn it back off and take the loss. I'd like to hear opinions before I crack the shrink wrap open :)

I haven't had a chance to play the first one but Persona 2 is an excellent RPG. Good dark modern storyline, steals more then it's fair share of lovecraft references and the gameplay's pretty fun. You negociate with demons into joining your party-kinda like a dating sim approach-before every battle. There's also a rumour system that's kinda neat, people read stuff on the internet and it becomes reality. The plot revolves around it naturally, but you can use rumours to generate equipment, skills and missions. The graphics are stunning (2D) and the characters have a lot of depth.

They're also releasing Persona 3 (Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne) for the PS2 here in America. It's about time we saw another Megami Tensei title.

... they have ATLUS fanboys? I didn't think we see enough of the series here to warrant fanboys. :P

I'm still looking for Persona: Revalations myself. Everytime I spot it in a shop it's condition's just not up to par. Oh well as you said it's not that expensive of a game. I'll get a hold of it eventually. Incidentally I think it's a dungeon crawler/first person persepctive like most of the Megami Tensei series. Persona 2 has a normal 3/4 view.

if the screen shots on the back are any indication, revelations is 3/4 down as well and not first person.

Hmmm, perhaps I will be keeping this title after all. I'm assuming from most reports that it's turn based, yes? action-rpgs give me the heebie jeebies

This one time, I went to the store and bought a game.

Then I took it home, opened up the packaging and played it.

Persona: Revelations switches back and forth between 3/4 overhead and first person. Generally the 3/4 overhead stuff is reserved for areas where you interact with NPCs (stores, houses, etc) and the first person perspective is reserved for dungeon crawling. It's a good game, with some huge dungeons and an in-depth combat system (both hallmarks of the MegaTen series).

BTW, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (the new MegaTen game coming to the US soon) isn't Persona 3. The Persona games are more of "gaiden" side stories and Nocturne is an entry in the main series. The distincation is pretty blurry with all the various MegaTen side stories and offshoots... but Persona is definitely something else on its own in the MegaTen universe.

If there are such things as Atlus fanboys... count me in! Their US division has consistently localized the sort of things most publishers wouldn't take a chance on anymore and their Japanese division rocks (especially their willingness to release shmups).

ha ha.

this was bought purely as tradebait at first, knowing people wanted it and having no initial want to play it myself. Then I gained interest, so I'm seeing if I still want to use it in trade. :P

BTW, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (the new MegaTen game coming to the US soon) isn't Persona 3.

However it was described as playing more like Persona 2 then the rest of the series. Also I called it Persona 3 incase Adam wasn't familar with the entire series. I mean we're talking about Persona games, then I jump in and mention Megami Tensei could get a little confusing... *shrugs* I know it's a sidestory but I didn't really think it made that big of a difference. It's all the same series.

Hmm, seems like it's a keeper all around then, I'll just leave it in it's current state for a while, since I still have FFX, FFX-2, Disgaea, La Pucelle Tactice (coming in a month) and more left in my RPG-to-beat pile... yikes!

They're both worth getting. I liked the storyline in both games. It was a change of pace from most RPGs, especially the modern setting. Too bad the second game in the series Innocent Sin didn't get released in the US.

Does anyone know anything about the Persona game released for the Game Boy?

I really enjoyed the first one also -- it's a modern setting with some nice charcters, good music, and fun gameplay. But the game is REALLY hard to beat and some parts can be nasty. It was worse in #2 and I never finished that one.

And yes, we need more RPG's set in modern times. :D

I have Revelations the Demon Slayer but I'm pretty certain that was a fantasy setting... Do you mean Demi Kids for the GBA? Or are there two others I don't know about?

Yeah, that's the game. I thought that was a spin off from the Persona series.

If I'm not mistaken, the Shin Megami Tensei games themselves are an offshoot, hence the "Shin".

I'm still kicking myself for not picking up Persona 2 back in the day. It's getting way too expensive now. Between my boyfriend and I, we got nearly every US released PSX RPG worth having, but that one we missed.

Yes, we exist :D See...told you you were a woman after my own heart.....too bad I'm not single :D

And Persona has a unique viewpoint, first person with normal RPG-style battles. And an overhead world map. It's darned unique, that's for sure!

You're right that they're all part of the same overall series, but it seems better to explain how Persona is one offshoot of a much larger series. Of course, if you like Persona, SMT: Nocture will probably appeal to you too! :)

That's ok. Neither am I.

And I really need to get a hold of Persona... :/

Is this the game where you set up traps in the hopes that the characters invading your castle will fall into them and suffer tragic deaths?

No, that's Tecmo's Deception which is queued up to be my third article. Tecmo's Deception 1-3 are some of the most original games out there, and I recommend them highly. Nothing like being the evil villain in a game!

No this is the series that you get to talk to demons and try to persuade them to join you. This is a very samplied way of how the game and series are different from other RPGs.

I've tried to play and like the Persona series but just could never get into it. I like the normal Shin Megami Tensei games parts 1 and 2 as well as Soul Hackers but the later is part of another gaiden series.

To slighty correct the person about the Megaten series.
The original games were called megami Tensei. There were 2 games released for it on the NES and MSX. Not sure if both parts got released on the MSX. It was orginally developed by Namcot before I believe they changed there name to Namco.

Namcot sold off the rights to the series to Atlus. Atlus made the first Shin Megami Tensei game on the Snes which is where the new part more or less comes from. They also made 5 gaiden series the Devil Summoner, Majin Tensei, Persona, Devil Children and 5th I forgot the name of. It's the 3rd or 4th most popular RPG series or at least in Japan.

They also remade I believe the first 2 MEgai Tensei games but I don't know much about them.
