thanks to clubninjas jap-sat sale i came to own this game.

recently i set up a japanese gaming station (SFC, JAPSAT on a comm 1084s) and have been going thru my titles. the set up is on the floor for the benefit of my 19 month old son, kids just love that crazy japanese flavor. the one game we've really enjoyed is steamgear mash, i even play it by myself, its just addictive and clever.

anybody else a fan of this one? it really is a hidden treasure.

Steamgear Mash is multiplater? LOL

I've enjoyed this little game quite a bit, it gets overlooked a bit with all my 2D fighters but I highly enjoy it. That first boss was a bitch to figure out tho, with all the playing cards and the hands... woof.

well playing with a toddler is relative of course, he often picks up another unconnected controller while i'm playing and mashes the buttons. i wouldnt have been able to beat rogue squadron 3 without giving him his own wavebird to hold. sometimes he'll actually play a bit, so far he did the best with indiana jones et, got high hopes for the kid! if anybody else has a toddler around i'm telling ya, they love japanese games.

Hey, if you are playing these games on Commodore 1084 monitors, then I really hope that you are playing them in GLORIOUS RGB!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm serious.

The Sega Saturn in RGB is beautifull. And a RGB cable for any system that uses RGB to a Commodore 1084 monitor is only a email away.

A email to Matthew. He will build RGB cables for just about any system, and making them for a 1084 monitor is especially easy.

I play my TG-16, Genny, SNES, Sega CD, Jaguar, 32X, Saturn, PS1 and N64 all in RGB on my little 1084 monitor.

In fact, I would like to get another one of these monitors, to put in my kids room. Since it's only 13 inches and relatively small, it would be perfect for the kids room. I can hook up a Genny in there, with a RGB cable and that monitor and let my kid go at it.

I have a 3 and a half year old that just loves the heck out of Kid Chameleon.

He doesn't really know how to play it too well yet, he can barely move the guy around the screen. He can't seem to get the concept of moving the character and jumping at the same time. He can either jump or move the character, but he doesn't seem to know how to do both. So it's hard for him to really get anywhere in the game without getting killed right away.

But he loves to watch me play it. He always says, "Dad, can we play Boy Chameleon?"

whats the price range on these RGB cables?

Depends on the system. Usually in the $15 to $20 range. What you should do is have Matthew make you a master cable for your 1084. He can make a cable that will connect to other cables for each system. It makes it much cheaper and easier to get cables for each system you want to use on it.

The master cable will have one end that will go to your 1084 monitor. The other end will be a female end that each systems RGB cable will attatch to. This makes it cheaper for him to make addititonal cables. Then he doesn't have to make all the parts for every single cable.

The Master Cable I think is like $15, and then the individual cables that attatch to it are like another $10, $15, $20, $25 depending on the system and the complexity of the cable.

Some systems like the TurboGrafx-16 and Nintendo 64 are very expensive to get working in RGB, because they need to actually be modified to output the right kind of RGB signal. The N64 has RGB capabilities but they are basically turned off for U.S. N64 systems. So you have to modify the innards to get back the RGB capability. Also the N64's RGB signal is very weak and needs to be amplified. Same thing with the TG-16. The TG-16 needs to have it's RGB signal amplified a little bit.

But if you are looking for RGB cables for the Genny or SNES or 32X or Sega CD or stuff like that, it's really cheap.

You can get ahold of Matthew at the_matthew@yahoo.ca

Yes, its a nice little 'hidden gem' of a game... I liken it to what would happen if you crossed MEGAMAN with SONIC 3D BLAST.

Even better, it can easily be had for $15 or less.

Quite a solid isometric platform blasting romp. I've never beat it though, though to be honest I have yet to really try. It's that "play it for an hour and move on" bug that still gets me. But one of these days....

I don't think I got farther than that snake kind of boss on the second level.

Yeah, I thought this was a nifty little game too. Although, it sort of lost its "charm" on me after a couple of plays, hence Christian's new ownership of it!

Save some room for yer Mash! LOL

Now forgive me for asking, but is "JAPSAT" supposed to mean "Japanese Saturn?" I see you mention SFC so it looks like the game got at least those two ports.

JAPSAT - is my own shorthand for japanese saturn, whats the popular usage? JPsat, j-sat, i dunno.

i'm 99% sure steamgear is a saturn exclusive, i couldnt really see it running on SNES/SFC.

i mentioned the SFC because its part of my japanese gaming set up, which includes the sat and a famiclone. just something i've been meaning to get around to for awhile, really dig into my import finds and see what US gamers missed. maybe my next project will be a PAL gaming set up :) ,anybody ever do that before? not that i have a ton of PAL games i cant play, just a few and some systems i'd like to check out. what to use for a monitor though, any way besides buying a PAL TV and voltage conv.?

I really think that for a PAL setup you'd be limited to using a converter and a PAL TV, sorry :( My portable CD-i (the Philips 370) apparently can take PAL input, but the screen's so small (and a TFT-style screen) that I couldn't imagine using it for that. A PAL setup would be cool.
