I'm really lookin forward to Gradius V, and I'm really glad it's gettin localized. In japan, with a preorder, you get a special DVD with some footage of really good gradius players playing it...or something like that. I forgot. But I hope Konami does some sort of preorder incentive here.
(BTW, how do you pronounce gradius? Is it Grade-e-us or Grad-e-us?) I've been using the latter, myself. and sorry about the crappy phonetic spellings LOL

I want to see how it is, but I'm not expecting much. I hate the gradius powerup system because of how damn user-unfriendly it is(oh you died once, game over!). I hate how every stage in the gradius games is an obligatory "going through the motions" one. I mean, at least r-type final did a few new things (that dimensional level the F-B stage, the tron stage).

And the gradius powerup system. Yes, it's crappy. Konami REALLY needs to change it up some, because it's unweildly. Having to power up your SPEED went out of date by the time MUSHA and Thunderforce were out and about. So you waste powerups on that, and then have to waste more just to get to say, twin lasers, and waste more to get to shield, etc. it sucks.

How about a sort of "buying" system. Each powerup is worth a certain amount of points, and each upgrade costs a certain amount of points. Whatever poitns are leftover, can go to another powerup, and you can use the R and L buttons to go through the menu at ease. I'd like that ALOT more, and it would actually make the prior konami attempts at upgrading where you could steal boss weapons and multiple powerups to weapons, actually work. Hell, make it so you get a certain amount of points when you die so you aren't completely useless when you come back. I'd like that. If Gradius 5 has something innovative like that, I'll love it. But to be honest, only Life Force and SNES Gradius 3 were really any good, and I'm not expecting anything new from this one.

I know. But I don't think Konami is going to let them mess with their gradius formula, aka rehash Gradius 2 ad infinitium.

Whichever way you slice it it's still Gradius, and I'm still going to enjoy the hell out of it, like I have with all the past games in the series.

I generally don't like horizontal shmups - I find it more difficult to orient myself and achieve the zen like state of all-bullet knowing shmups godliness that happens with verts. I did pick up R-Type Final, which was pretty decent, and I intend on picking up this bad boy as well. As a rule, any shmup that comes out in America - I will buy, whether its good or not simply to support the scene - but I have a feeling that this game will be awesome. I had a personal vendetta against Gradius III for kicking my little ass so many times when I was a wee one....and plus its by Treasure like someone said earlier; all the more reason to pick it up for me.

Oh - and looking at the japanese spelling, I would say its most likely pronounced Gra-dei-us.

This was a great way to describe this adrenal nirvana. I just wanted to give a shout out to the shmups zen. We should all strive to make all our shumps into zmups.

More shmups zen to us all.

The correct pronunciation in English is correct whether you say

Grad-ee-uss

or

Grah-dee-uss

However, the name most likely derives from Gladius, since the L and R are often mangled in Japanese. A Gladius is a type of sword commonly used by the Romans. I suppose the official original Latin pronunciation of the word would be Glah-dee-oos, since the "u" sounds like the oo in "shoot" in Latin, and the "a" generally takes the soft "ah" sound in Latin. But like I said, either one at the top is correct in English, depending on where you are from.

The Japanese spell it GARADEiUSU, but then write with Roman letters "Gradius" on the box.

With R-Type Final and Gradius V coming out for PS2, I finally have to get the system, the price drop, as I've heard, is coming soon.

I plan to get all good 2D games (mainly fighters, shooters, puzzle, and cartoon style RPGs) for PS2 and not on other systems, which aren't too many, but I can think of:

Dragon Ball Z Budokai
Dragon Ball Z Budokai 2
Gradius 3/4
Gradius 5
Growlanser Generations (coming soon)
Guilty Gear X
Guilty Gear X2
Guilty Gear X3 (coming soon)
Grandia Xtreme
Harvest Moon
King of Fighters 2000/2001
Megaman Anniversary
R-Type Final
Silpheed
Super Bust-A-Move 2

Other games like Rayman series, CvS EO, Megaman X7, Marvel vs Capcom 2 are on different systems (Xbox and/or GC) so I would rather get them on other systems. Anyone can recommend good 2D or cartoon style games I've omitted above?

I'm sooo getting this! I'm into schmups big-time, so one more in my collection is a welcome sight. (come on, dear game, come join Ikaruga and R-Type Final!)

BTW, I pronounce it "Gray-dee-us"

I'm curious about one thing: since schmups come from a tradition of early space shooters, how do these new versions fare among younger players who are under the age of 20? Are these games seen as a welcome change from what's usually released now (since these games really do come from another generation), or are they looked down upon as some repetitive, boring type of game?

Here's a rule-Dragonball games pretty much all suck. If you're listing good cartoony games, you don't want those.

Escape From Monkey Island is pretty sweet, but then, it's also on PC. And CvS2 isn't on your list...the PS2 version is so much better then the Cube and Xbox versions.

And what other console is mega man X 7 on?

Well I checked Atari website, yup, Dragon Ball Z is 3D and it sucks hard, better stick with original Jp 2D games for those. CvS2 EO, I thought its the same game. Megaman X7 is actually only on PS2, while Anniversary comes out on PS2 and GC. Another interesting game is TM Ninja Turtles for multi-platforms.

Also Disney has many games on all 3 systems, but the only game standig out is Kingdom Hearts.

CvS2 to EO changes:

Priority changes in moves-what beats what is different from the original, which shifts around the tiering
S-groove builds meter faster
Roll Cancels are gone(probably the most drastic change because this kills alot of the strategy the game developed)
EO mode is included, which lets you do specials without the motions, thereby making charge characters really BS

I'm sure there's more, but those are off the top of my head. Although some stuff like improving on S-groove is nice, the removal of the roll cancel glitch overall hurts the game more then helps it.

Good 2D / cartoon games...

Well for PS2 I'm not sure, but if you're counting PS1 games, you might add:

-Alundra
-Metal Slug X

Probably some others, too, but I've picked them up and haven't played 'em yet, and therefore can't really recommend them.
