After some haggling with the printer, I've managed to get SIXTEEN full-color pages into the upcoming edition of the DP "Advance" Guide. This section will fall near the middle of the book.

Now the big question.

What would you want to see in these 16 color pages? Rare games? Consoles? Screen shots? Many customers have asked for this over the years, I want to make sure that these pages are being put to the best possible use!

Keep in mind also that there will still be black-and-white pictures across the rest of the book - so these should be the things that have the most impact in high quality color stock.

Your opinions, please!

I don't know, but this is great news.

i would suggest reserving those sixteen pages for pictures of the absolute rarest items. the carts themselves and maybe screenshots...i dont know how many other people actually LIKE virtual boy but since those screenshots dont fare well inblack and white i would suggest a page or two of VB LOL
other than that i'd suggest that those sixteen pages be an r6/r7+ showcase... things that most of us can only drool upon but never afford.(i.e. virtual boy - sd gundam dimension war, SNES - DKC competition cart)

I suggest screenshots for at least one game representing each respective system that is covered in the DP Guide. Pics of consoles would seem like a waste of the color imo considering most of them are black and white anyway (Nintendo NES, Sega Genesis, Atari 5200).

Yeah, I'd suggest something like having a pic of the cart on the far left, a pic of the title screen in the middle, and an in-game pic on the far right. Do this 3 times per page per side, and presto!

I agree with Bratwurst, besides it's really easy aquiring photos of consoles via the net in full colour, but photos of rare cartridges are a lot harder to find I think.

The rare stuff. Many of us won't be able to own them, but having full color pictures will help ease the pain a little bit.

Rare items definately, carts, systems, and accessories.

Getting color pages are rare so save them for the items that are rare.

:D

I'm getting even more anxious waiting for this book!

Rare stuff in color is the best choice.

My vote is for rare games. Since a lot of people wont be geting one, it might be nice to see one. :D

people who buy the DP guide's know what the rare items/consoles look like.. You should use the color pages for classic gaming events and personalities like Nolan Bushnell at 2k3 or what have you.

It seems the guide is bi-yearly. Work with that in mind I guess.

Might have 1 color page set aside for crazy cool in the wild finds over two years.

I also support the crazy rare stuff and oddities pages. And maybe a page of some of the crazy collection stuff. A kinda room of doom, but of only A single system of some of us collectors. (Ie.Dangerboy's almost Complete PSOne collection he's down to 6 games people[not counting the stuff in transit] ya know stuff like that.) It could be kinda interesting.

I second or third, the idea of rare and or unusual games on a system by system basis. Screenshots of the games would be great as well.

How about rare *limited* games, things like Sonic LE, Donkey Kong Comp & Starfox Weekend?

THE CENTERFOLD! LOL

Um, I think...a variety of things. Mostly not individual games. Maybe a few consoles.

I would think screenshots would be a good idea. Most carts are either gray or black already, that doesn't seem very exciting to me when compared to full color photos of in-game screenshots, particularly of uncommon games.

I also think a page or two dedicated to the rooms of doom would be really cool. I think it would inspire people to collect, and lend even more credability to the book. I think the color in a room of doom would really pop off the page.

My initial thoughts were rooms of doom and screenshots. But then, I realized that rooms of doom can already be viewed both online and in print (Tips & Tricks). As for screenshots, it's the same.

How about oddities, though? Not necessarily "rarities," but quirky things of the industry that few people have come across--like a Ripley's Museum of video games. Sure, you can drool over pictures of rarities, but oddities will at least provoke thought and interest; we all know what the rarities are, by now. Let's have something unique.

I would have to say the rare stuff also, but having some 'unqiue' pics, such as the people involved with the games/systems in the books at events like CGE would be nice as well. Maybe about 4 pages for that and the rest for the really RARE stuff.

I say have a photo montage of "classic" vs. "Next-gen" games; a screenshot of SMB3 next to a screenshot of the remake from Super Mario Allstars. Ghosts and Goblins next to Super Ghouls and Ghosts, etc. Show people how the games advanced and franchises changed from the Atari and 8-bit days into 16 and 32 bit console iterations. Pretty huge contrast when you look at Donkey Kong, then Donkey Kong Country.

A big picture including all the console listed in the guide along with 1 game of those systems should be make. In short, a big "familly" photo .

Doesn't everyone already know what most of the rare games look loke by now?

I say be a little different and just celebrate videogames. Have a variety of different things such as old ads, magazine covers, nic-nacs, maybe a pic of a few classic arcade cabinets, game catalogs, etc... How about the top games with the best cover art of all time?

sure you can also include a few pics of some rare games but I'd include some pics of some common and popular games with nice cover art as well.
Yeah, thatīs the best idea for me...

Definitely have the rare stuff. If we can't have it, we should be able to admire it. :)

I like the idea of oddities more than some scans of Quadrun, etc. Perhaps
some shots of ultra rare arcade games like Marble Madness 2? Pictures of
old 1980s & 90s era arcades and gamestores would be cool. Old ads, toys,
t-shirts Atari Games used to offer for high scorers for Klax & Rampart. Any
good stuff related to the Swordquest contest. A montage showing the
growth of Philly Classic year by year. And any crazy prototype hardware
& games (but I lean more towards proto boxes than some pics of epromms).
And shot or two of some of the most impressive room of dooms.

I would propose putting everything together in a cronological order. Start
with some ancient 70s computers to arcades to NES and to PS1 with the
odd screen shot. Showing the growth and change in video games.

Wow, lots of great thoughts and ideas.

I think a good approach might be a mixture of rare and odd items, room of doom photos, and ads/screenshots. There are 16 pages available so perhaps four pages of each of these three sub-categories is in order!

I hereby demand that the entire Genesis/Megadrive section is in full colour :D

Nah j/k, the rarities/oddities/room o'doom mix sounds great to me.

omg you said ROMZ heh

Alright, well, how about a mosaic of magazine covers/game boxeN? If we could fit enough on there it would be possible to make them form a logo or something (nudge nudge wink wink). I believe there's more than a couple programs out there that can do this for you, and there's such an image at my workplace.

That would be one page. Or perhaps two...the "centerfold."

I also think a console map would be great. I've seen a really nifty "family tree" of Sega consoles, something like it would be awesome.
