On the back of NES carts there is a warning that says something like "Do not clean with alcohol, etc.". I don't know if they mean don't clean the cart itself, or don't clean the contacts. I commonly use alcohol to remove residue from stickers and other gunk from the cases. I usually use a q-tip dipped in 409 to clean the contacts if the game is DOA.

Does anyone know what this warning actually applies to, and why? Has anyone damaged anything using alcohol?

Funny; I used alcohol to clean off sticker residue on the warning label itself LOL

I make a considerable amount of spare cash ignoring "do not open" and "no user serviceable parts inside" labels.

The trash basket next to my bench is full of 'em.

LOL

Probably to force the poor kid at the time to ask his father to bought the NES official cleaning kit ? IIRC the stuff in the cleaning kit it's almost (if not the same) has the alcohol.

When Nintendo wrote that they were counting on people trying to use over the counter rubbing alchohol which is mostly water and takes forever to dry. Wet cart connectors + NES = BZZT electrical short.

Yup. Just use some Isopropyl alchohol and everything will be fine and dandy.
